Headmaster, in conference Dear Friends, Four years to be spent anywhere seem an eternity; but in retrospect the Brookline High School setting, although not something we would call the loveliest in the world, has I hope provided occasional if not frequent moments of excitement and happiness. A prominent writer in a letter to a friend said, “I come out of this new experience with the strengthened conviction that we can do nothing better in life than to take and follow the threads it offers us, step by step, towards something we do not see, but which must be there ahead, as surely as the World exists I write to you as friends and hope that you will “follow the threads” of your “new experience,” whatever and wherever it may be. Sincerely yours. SENIORS r rwT, The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The man who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever seen before. Creativity in living is not without its attendant difficulties, for peculiarity breeds contempt. And the un- fortunate thing about being ahead of your time is that when people finally realize you were right, they ' ll say it was obvious all along. You have two choices in life; you can dissolve into the mainstream, or you can be distinct. To be distinct, you must be different. GIRLS SWIMMING This years Varsity Girls Swim team ended the season with an impres- sive 9-1 record, and won the Suburban League meet. There were two senior captains, Ann Harrington, and Heather Maxon who hold the school records for the 6 and 1 1 feet dives. Coached by Joanne D’Amigello and Jim Locke the team also has two outstanding sophomores. Cindy Clifford holds seven school records and is all American in breast stroke, and Liz Von Huene holds the school record for the fifty yard free style. With these girls returning, next year should be as rewarding as this past year. 143 Front Row: Shirley Chin, Mary Page, Noga Venkahov, Karen Pappas (J. V. co-captain) Ellen Greenblatt (J. Coach Crane said, “I expected it to be a rebuilding year, but it turned out to be a winning one!” The team placed 2nd behind Brockton in the Subur- which was their captain. Sue MacGillivray. ton was undefeated until they met up with Brookline. All the girls on the team worked together to give all their opponents a good game. The team for next year should be just as good as they will be losing only two players one of which was their captain. With expectations of going to the Eastern Mass, Tourney, the soccer team ended the “74” season with an 8-9-1 record. Although the team didn’t make the tourney, Coach Conroy was pleased with the team and especially pleased with the work of 8 individuals. Co-captain David Berkman was phenomenal scoring the most goals for the team and also making the 1st All Star team. Jimmy Muse and Peleg Gal also had excellent seasons and both made the 2nd All Star Team. Joey McNeilly, Rookie Deitrich Blummer, and Co-captain Phil Herman had fine seasons. Also soph- omore sensation Henry Mosquera and jun- ior firebomb Dan Finn helped the team to their 8 victories. Next season is going to be a difficult one as only 4 varsity men will be returning to take the place of 16 seniors who will be leaving this year. VARSITY FOOTBALL Brookline High enjoyed the fortunes of a successful sea- son. Led by tri-captains Brian Cloherty, Louis DeSantis and Dyke Hoy, the team achieved a record of 6 wins and 4 losses. The season ended happily as Brookline drove tradi- tional Thanksgiving Day rival Newton down to defeat, 13-7. Seniors Richard Kirby, Kevin Burke, Tim Lally and Jeff Horblit also played important parts in the team’s six vic- tories. Outstanding juniors consisted of Paul Piatelli, Fred Greene, Bob Clark, Bob Mahon and Joe Galasti, all of whom will be returning next year for a very hopeful season. And last of all, sensational sophomore, Steve Ewanouski, made the offense go with his superb quarterbacking. Steve has two strong years ahead of him.. The team next year has many returning lettermen, and the coaches, along with the rest of the student body, have faith in that the team will have a very successful season. m T JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Row 1— Brian Sheehan, Scott Horwitz, Steve Cullen, Paul Monahan, Joe Louler, Len McCarthy, Mike Spillane Row 2 — Coach Rizzutti, Brian Burke, Colin O’Connell, Jackie Hunt, Louis Sheldoni, Charles Bradley, Phil Frankgolis, Paul Buchanan. The Cross Country team, headed by coach Norman Laasko, ended the “74” season with a 3-6 record. Fine performances by captain Steven Hunt along with Chris Browne and Robert Siegal led the team to its 3 victories. The team would have probably had a better record if early injuries to Mike McNally, Tony Page, and Brian McMahon were avoided. The team performed with ex- cellence, upsetting Rindge Tech and beating Cambridge Latin and Quincy. Captain Hunt qualified for the All State meet, and placed 8th overall. Joy Koch, the first female to ever play on a male BHS team placed 6th in the girls state meet. She also helped the team immensely during the regular season. The losses of captain Hunt, R. Siegal, and M. McNally will hurt the team but returning Lettermen and future co-captains Tony Page and Chris Browne, should fill their shoes. 158 CROSS COUNTRY. 1 First Row. Susan Perry, Kim Harris, Paula Simard, Luanne MacAuley, Ellen McCarthy, Evelyn Bugley, Denise Beaumont, Sally Steverman. The firls field hockey team had a fantastic season with a record of 5-1-2. Brookline had the most shutouts in the league; only one shot went past goalie Ellen McCarthy the entire season. The team went all the way to the State Tournament when they played Hingham and lost by a close 2-1 score. They did exceedingly well considering that Hingham was heavily favored and was report- ed to have more talent than Brookline. One of the best games was against Newton, the defending champs, which ended in a scoreless tie. Brookline then tied Cam- bridge which caused the team to miss first place by only one point to Newton. Some of the players who showed outstanding skill and leadership were captains Nora McLoughlin and Marcia Fowler. Phyliss Whit- comb and Luanne MacAulay also contributed greatly to the team. Sophomores Kim Harris and Susan Perry proved their talent and will be a great asset to the team in coming years. Coach Linda Roberts proudly exclaimed that the team played together both mentally and physically which is why the team had such a successful season. 160 FIELD HOCKEY B3 1 tL , - A ' u f ■i ■ 1 Kneeling: Mr. Slaven — Coach, Mark Young — Captain Standing: Mike Cline, Percy Cook, Gary Sundance Clay, Tony Lee, Richard Kirby, Larry Derany, Paul Kirby, David Berkman, Bob Mullaney, Mark Tuler, Richard Close. With All- Star center and Captain Mark Young leading the team to victory they compiled an impressive winning record. Supported by ten hustling students, eight of whom are seniors, the Great White Machine has proven that team work can bring results. WRESTLING The wrestling team ended the season with a record of 3 and 10. It was a pretty hard year for the team. Over all, they were an in- experienced team and with the loss of last years Co-captain, the season was not made any easier. There were a few key people on the team. They were sophomore Sean Griffin at 100 lbs, who had a great record of 8 and 4, Co-Captain Jimmy Griffin at 134 lbs, 10 and 3, Junior Ed Roberts at 140 lbs, record of 8-2-1. Dietrich Blumer, senior, with a record of 7-2. Peleg Gal was a pleasant surprise. Peleg at 187 lbs proved very good with a 2 and 1 record. The best match was probably against Newton North. Although Brookline lost it was a good match. Unfortunately Brookline had to forfeit two weight classes. The team finished the year with a 30 to 19 win over Concord. i 1 Row I: Lee Shapiro, Bob Bing Yui, Charles Pepper, Jim Sullivan, Tyrone Carpenter, Peter Lew, Phillip Kusbi, Jon Fineburg.
