Text from Pages 1 - 212 of the 1974 volume:

HEADMASTER TO THE CLASS OF 1974: During our four years together we have gone through an evolution beginning with social upheaval and political unrest to the present mood of apathy, passive- ness and societal moral decadence. 1973-1974 is marked by the emergence of a search for personal identity, a return to more traditional and even conservative patterns. Our primary education- al concern had emphasized process and now we have turned our attention to content. There is revised concern for guidelines, codes, ethics, morality and values designed to fill the vacuum which coincides with the decline of institutions — the schools, formal religious structures and political organisms. Our time of faddism, turmoil and national agony led us to hysteria and crisis. VVe have flagellated ourselves individually and castigated ourselves nationally. It is time to go forward. There are strong latter-day signals — auspicious signals marked by HOPE. Now, go! With hope, trust and yea! even faith! Our civilization has not declined as a prelude to fall. Rather, the decline presages the rise of a new man of the 21st Century. You are it! Make way confidently and gladly, for all our sakes. CARMEN P. RINALDI SCHOOL COMMITTEE First Row: (Seated) Ann H. MacDonald-Assistant Superintendent, Viola R. I’inanski, John Connerton, Alette K. Reed, Robert I. Sperber-Superintendent. Second Row: (Standing) Helen V. O ' Brien-Secretary, Joseph Robinson, Ann M. Wacker, Jacques M. Dronsick, Ellsworth E. Rosen, Brian L. Conry. Absent: Raymond McNally. Although few Brookline High students have personal contact with members of the School Committee, we are all directly affected by the decisions of this body. Last year however, in accordance with Chapter 95, Acts of 1972, the Student Advis- ory Board was formed. Five students are elected to represent the Brookline High School community in all matters before the School Committee, The two bodies meet periodically during the school year, and the students retain their posts for one year. Now at last, the students have some say in matters concerning the high school. STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD First Row: Haven Gracey, Ellen Stotsky. Second Row: Neal Piltch, Jerry Fleishman. SOCCER — For the first time in B.H.S. history, the Varsity Soccer Team entered the State tournament. Under the leadership of tri-captains Kevin McNeil, Marc Hetnick, Victor Felszegi, and Coach Conroy they finished the Suburban League season in third place with a spectacular league record of 9-4-3. Outstanding players such as Peleg Gal, Dan Riley, Henry Mosqera and Ricky Schwartz helped win their way into the playoffs. With two exciting goals in the last four minutes, Brook- line won their first playoff game against Andover. Brookline’s season ended after losing a close game against Newton 1-0. Their success is attributed to high spirits and team co-operation. Mr. Conroy is optimistic that next year will be as rewarding as this one was. Previously the team had lost seven games, tied one and won one, their one victory over Boston Tech. Considering the rebuilding job of filling 23 slots vacated by last years seniors, however, coaches Schluntz, Barendino and Fleming along with trainer Mr. Devio did a commendable job in coordinating a team which showed impressive spirit and hustle throughtout the season. Constituating the list of graduating seniors are: Co-Captains Jim Hamelberg and Glenn Carle, Richie Buckley, Sean O’Brien, Steve Whitman, Ed Vien, Tom Small, Jack Tally, Phil Robertson, Jim Perry, Peter Sweeny, Steve Rourke, Joe May, Law- ton Cooper and Mike McGourty. With almost all the lettermen returning, next year’s squad should have a winning season and should allow coaches Schluntz and Fleming to breath easier. m3 F RESHMAN F OOTBAl,L - I ' imt Row: G. Performing along with them, are the Majorettes and the newly formed Drill Team. In their new uniforms, they add to the total excitement and enthusiasm at all the games. The Varsity Field Hockey team ended a dis- appointing season with a record of 1-4-5, their only win being against Cambridge. The team suffered in losing Captian Peggy Sheehan due to injuries early in the season, also in lack of experience as only 5 players had previously played on the Varsity Team. The J.V. Field Hockey team finished their season as suburban league champs. Under the leadership of Captain Ellen McCarthy (goalie) and star players such as Cheryl Fay, Cindy O’Brien and Sally Steverman. The team was undefeated with a record of 6-0-4. Unfortunatly they were unable to compete in a tourna- ment as J.V. teams do not get proper recognition, however since Newton lost Brookline claimed the title of the suburban league. Next year has prosperous out- looks for another great season as this year’s team consisted of mostly freshmen. Varsity hockey team finished a superb season with a record of 11-3-2 regular season play, putting them in second place in the Suburban League and qualifmg them to enter the States Tournament. Brookline made it through the state tournament by show- ing great team effort in their last three games, the first a shutout for Brookline against Weymouth North 1-0, and the last two against Arlington which was split between the two teams. Their victory against Arlington was the highlight of the season. After Marc Hetnik and Kenny Bauer’s goals, Steven Rourke scored the tie breaker from the blue line in the third period winning the game for Brookline 3-2. Marc Hetnik and Sean O’Brien received M.V.P. award for their outstanding performance during the game. Despite their loss to Boston Latin in the State Tourna- ment, the team performed better than had been expected. Their success can be attributed to Coach Ron DiVincenzo and co-captains Glenn Carle and Steven Rourke. Steven, along with seniors Dan Riley, Kevin MacNeil, and Sean O’Brien were the defensive backbone of the team. Two outstanding offensive players were high scorers Marc Hetnik and junior Kenny Bauer, along with Brian Doherty and Jim McCuen. The team will have a good start next year with returning lettermen Chuck Heintz, Joe McNeilly, Ben Steverman and sophomores Paul Piatelli, Frank Nelson, and Tony Page who were an essential part of the team this year. WRESTLING Harry Conforti--Sectional Champ This year’s wrestling team, headed by coach Jerry Hall, had a frustrating season with a league record of 1-9-1. The best team effort all year was shown in a close, but disappointing match against Newton North. Sean Griffin and Dyke Hoy achieved their first wins. Among the best wrestlers were: Steven Whitman, who is a senior and was wrestling for the first time; Jimmy Griffin, a returning letterman who will play an important part in next year’s team; Ed Roberts, a sophomore with two strong years ahead of him, and captains Harry Conforti and Kevin Griffin, who both deserve recognition for their superb wrestling. “Harry and Kevin showed fine team leadership and personal dedication throughout the season. A special thanks to both of them,’’ commented Coach Jerry Hall. Although their league record wasn’t very impressive, they placed 8th. Harry and Kevin both placed 1st in their respective weights, and Ed Roberts placed 4th in his weight. In the State Tournament, Brookline placed 11th out of 100 teams, with only 2 teams from their section scoring higher than them. Harry placed 2nd at a weight of 121. Kevin placed 3rd at a weight of 140, and Ed placed 8th at a weight of 134. At Brockton’s Tournaments, Kevin placed 1st at 140 pounds and received the outstanding wrestler award for the tournament. Harry Conforti did an outstanding job placing 3rd at a weight of 121 pounds in the New England Tournament. i Kevin Griffin--Sectional Champ 133 First Row: Hamish Blackman, David Kirzner, Tad Fox, Steve Levin, Steve Flunt. Solid performances by everyone has made each contest close, losing for example, by only one point to Cambridge Latin and by two points to Newton. Along with clutch Co-Captains Tom Small and Rob Turesky, the squad boasts many other winning athletes including Larry Friedman— 50 yard dash, Mark Schwartz- -600 yrd. dash, Richard Thompson— 1000 yd. run. Tad Fox— 2 mile run, Steve Finkel— shot put. Rob Turesky- 300 yd. dash and Matty Sawyer-high jump, all of them winning these events in their win against Arlington. It should also be mentioned that Gary Pagar is the 3rd best miler in the league. This talented team expects a winning record next year. 134 Concert Choir Mixed Ensemble 137 EVERYBODY’S CONCERT for and by EVERYBODY! J 138 TROUPE 2002 OF THE INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY In March, Brookline High entered the yearly Festival Competition with the futuristic play, The Veldt, by Ray Brad- bury. The play, which takes place before the end of this century, dep- icts a frightening tech- nological world, devoid of human relationships and communication. Wendy Jacobs and Al- len Merritt played the parents of Rose Robinson and Michael Clebnik. Kathee Ham was the psychiatrist who warned the parents of impending disaster, and Marcy Clebnik played the part of the electrician. As for the Dramatics Society in general, besides two student-teacher directed one act plays, the winter presentation of “Blithe Spir- it” by Sir Noel Coward, directed by Mr. Bel- liveau, Faculty Advisor, enjoyed moderate success. 140 . . . and Thespians K. ' IS ■ill Things Don’t Change: We Change Henry David Thoreau In 1843, the idea of a school for higher education in Brookline (then only a small town, whose people were farmers) took shape, and classes were first held at the old town house that year. Brookline High was destined to see many institutions, both good and bad, rise and flourish, totter and fall; to see all this and still remain and grow when they all had passed. In 1914, Brookline spent $32,000 for a new high school building located at 1 15 Greenough St. When war and the Depression had both passed, Brookline High School still remained. It was September 25, 1936. School had just closed for the day when the fire, caused by a faulty incinerator, started in the attic of the building. The fire grew in intensity as the flames spread out over the building. When the fire was finally extinguished, the building was damaged beyond repair. The only things that were saved from the fire were some important records. However, when the building and the grounds around the then destroyed school were inspected, two other things were found i n the rubble to have survived the fire— the two statues of the Greek gods Athena and Diana that stood in the courtyard. When the new building was completed, the statues were placed in the quadrangle and have remained there since. 1 143 ITCHY SCALP . . . USE VITALISM I PASSED!!!! OH, MR. But on January 22, Frank W. Price, steeplejack extraordinaire came to the rescue. Mr. Price mounted the one hundred foot flagpole and tied a new rope on it. This reporter, who was one of several hundred witnesses to Mr. Price’s ascent, sought to discover how one enters the field of steeplejacking. When asked how he had become a steeplejack, he replied that there had been a line of progression, starting with “trees, then water towers, then radio towers, then church steeples, and finally flag poles.” No one in his family had been steeplejacks. Steeplejacks don’t charge by the hour, but rather by the height of the object climbed. He charges “$1.25 per foot to climb up for a job like this and $1.75 to paint.” He also said that he had put one-half inch rope onto the BHS flagpole and had only charged for three-eights inch. If you’re interested in his services, you are advised to contact Mr. Price at Steeplejack Inc. in Abington. (Reprinted from Sagamore 2 5 74; An alphabet for B.H.S. Students ! Rather, it is a w ' ay of looking at Brookline High. During this past year at B.H.S., there was good, bad, and blah. Some days the goodies won- -going home for vacation days and X-Block days; and some days the baddies won— losing tourna- ment days and walking-to-school-in-rain-or- snow-days. But there were many days that were simply blah, routine, ho-hum days. We opened doors, climbed stairs, shut windows, sat on chairs. We studied books, cut class, read signs, kept off the grass. Consequently, an Alphabet for B.H.S. Students shows the good, the bad, and the blah. 192 is for books, and beer. is for class, and cutting class.
