G UIDANCE is one of the few depart- ments that accompany every student from his first footsteps to his last at Brookline High School. The help and under- standing that the members of the Guidance De- partment give to the student is an essential part of his progress in the high school. In dedi- cating this Murivian to the Guidance Depart- ment, we are, in a sense, dedicating it to the entire faculty, for the assistance the Guidance Department gives the student throughout his few years here is so representative of the will- ingness to help, the true spirit of teaching, that every teacher in the high school offers the stu- dent. To express our appreciation we dedicate the Murivian of 1965 to the Guidance Depart- ment of Brookline High School. 2 THE MURIVIAN EDITORIAL Carolyn Shure, Editor-in- chief; Deborah Shure, Copy editor; Sheryl Julian, Sue Kur- land, Karen Vexler, Rozanne Marel, Richard Millen, Ken- neth Price, Copy staff; Sarah Schmidt, Diane Gilbert, Co- layout editors; Anne Levine, Cheryl Bornstein, Sarah Tarko, Layout staff; Ellen Short, Pho- tography editor; Susan Naigles, Ruth Packet, Rona Silverton, Janis Greenberg, Photography staff; Susan Rosenbaum, Art Editor; Betsy Zanditon, Diana Dow, Art staff; Betsy Show- stack, Proof editor; Adrianne Amirian, Sandy Daitch, Proof staff. But there are other parts between the final countdown and summer vacation, parts that mean “spring” at Brookline High School. Sports change in the spring from football and basketball to baseball, tennis, swimming, track, and golf. The energies of both participants and observers shift to the spring sports. Results in 1964 w ' ere sometimes good, sometimes not very good. WINS LOSSES 4 Var. Baseball 14 1 Jr. Var. Baseball 5 4 Var. Tennis 6 1 Spring Track 4 9 Golf 2 The concerts given by Brookline High Students were part of the spring. Our band played here at Brookline and then at Springfield, Vermont. Then came the Quadrangle Con- cert, which represents the combined efforts of the entire 80 music department. It rained and the quadrangle moved to the gym. The concert did not suffer in the transfer. Last year’s concert was no exception to the annual success of this spring event. There is much, though, that has been left out of last year’s spring. No one could get a single good picture of a daydream. Daydreams were part of Spring 1964, though. Their symptoms could be seen everywhere. Teachers were probably the first to notice the blank stares on the students’ faces as their eyes met the sun through open windows. Not so many people hurried across the bridges to the next class. Slow steps are hard to photograph. Nor could we show the warm weather that everyone knows helps daydreams to form. These are a part of spring. They make the sports, the teas, and the concerts seem even more like spring. But beau- tiful, lazy thoughts are very difficult to photograph. Our countdown cannot be forgotten. Graduation Day did come. It rained. That kind of weather could become a tradi- tion at graduation. Still, a fine group of seniors were gradu- ated in a fine mist. And so, somewhat soggy, the countdown ended. Student Government The School Council exists to give students an opportunity to learn about and participate in government. The Sagamore news column “From the J.F.K. Room,” open meetings and assem- blies, and the recently established Inter-Organ- ization Council are all directed towards a better understanding of government organization and responsibility. The Council sponsors the B.A.T., the Winter Carnival, the selling of the New York Times, and approves club charters. Prior to the death of the late President Kennedy a proposal was made to dedicate a room at the high school in his honor. Recently, with the aid of other stu- dent organizations, the Council refurnished and dedicated its meeting room to President John F. Kennedy. PACKARD HOUSE On a bleak, snowy January afternoon in 1962, the first Packard House Council meeting was called to order at 2:05 P.M. At first it appeared to be an ordi- nary house council; however, this group proved itself to be a capable and conscientious one. That year it planned and sponsored the Memorial Day assembly and the “Spring Dance,” and also collected dues from over 600 students in Packard House. The pattern was set. The Packard House Council was a council of the “New Frontier” and it moved enthusiastically forward. During the next two years the Council planned dances, dues collection drives, and House assemblies. The meetings were as active as they were spirited — undoubtedly some of the filibuster mas- ters of the future were thus nurtured. In the senior year the Council worked even harder — running another dues drive, running House assem- blies, and planning the traditional senior activities. There was no more time for arguments. Time was short and Packard House had to finish all business by graduation. Finally, after a busy, successful year, on a hot, sunny afternoon in May 1965, the last Packard House Council meeting (class of 1965) was adjourned at 2:35 P.M. All to the Winter Carnival we’re bound To see the Winter Queen newly-crowned. With vigor and enthusiasm, Shailer House students success- fully sponsored these school wide activities. Shailer House has attained a reputation for or iginality as displayed in the sophomore Quadrangle-Barbecue Dance. In the following year, Shailer House will strive to ex- ceed its present achievements. The scheduling of a program featuring this famous group provided house unity. The members of Lincoln House became very enthusiastic in their first activity and became involved in selling pictures, writing publicity, hanging posters, and finding groups to com- plement the program. Lincoln House has started its high school years rather unusually. It will probably have three more ex- citing years. Sealed: Marty Jacobs, Treasurer; Emily Stahler, Secretary. Standing: Ken Travis, President; Jerry LoPorto, Vice-Presi- dent. 89 The Court of Justice helps enforce tne rules of Brookline High School while the justices learn about the workings of democracy. Each marshal, whether elected by his homeroom or appointed by his housemaster, is entrusted with a great deal of responsibility — he must direct corridor traffic, keep order in the lunchroom, and make certain that students obey the rules. Locker marshals provide a special service by aiding distressed students who have forgotten their keys. LOCKER MARSHALS — Left to right: Chris Brogna, Richard Davidson, Judy Ostroff, Rosalind Tarko. Brookline High enjoyed a successful 5- 4 season this year under the leadership of co-captains Bruce Cochrane and Ken Rosenthal. The highlight of the season was a 14-0 victory over Newton on Thanksgiving Day. In the opening game of the season Brookline was defeated in a close game 14-0 by a powerful Weymouth team. That game was followed by two victories by Brookline in close games, 26-22 over Waltham and 6-0 over Leominster. Brookline then lost a tough one to a fine Quincy team 26-20, but followed this game with a hard-earned 20-14 victory over the always fine Arlington eleven. An injury-riddled Brookline team was then defeated by Watertown 34-14, but Brookline came back with a 14-0 win over Brockton. Brookline was then de- feated 30-6 by a line Beverly team. Congratulations are due to the entire Brookline squad who, led by the co-cap- tains Brian Conry, Bob Farrell, and Fred Hafferty, had a successful season despite many injuries. Mark Mazer and Jay Hanflig, All Scholastic Guards. Brookline High School was able to have a respectable season despite the loss of many close ball games. These losses include two last-second losses to Rindge Tech, one to Medford and one to Watertown. Brookline came up with two fine victories over a strong Weymouth team and a convincing 57-43 triumph over traditional rival Newton. The team was led by senior co-cap- tains Mark Mazer and Jay Hanflig. Also prominent were high-scoring forwards Charles Dranetz, Herb Witten, and Bob Levine. The team also featured three promising underclassmen — juniors Stu Green and Jeff Blumenthal and sophomore Steve Rubin. With these fine un- derclassmen Brookline has much promise for the future. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL — Training, practice, and exposure to com- petition are integral parts in the maturing of an athlete. In a team sport, such as basketball, these parts mesh with the result that boys who have developed their skills strive to work together for the glory of the team rather than for personal ambition. The J.V. basketball team is the last place for boys to polish all they have learned before they become members of the varsity squad. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL — Row 1: R. Corkin, M. Forbes, L. Grant, R. Although this year’s team was not officially a varsity team, varsity recogni- tion will be given to next year ' s soccer squad. Judging by the successful season enjoyed in 1964, fall of 1965 should see a new winning sport at Brookline High School. WINTER TRACK — The winter track team overcame an inauspicious start to win two of their last three meets, and dropped the final contest only on a dis- puted decision. Co-captains Jim Burke (1000 yard run), Ross Coppelman (mile) and Mark Granoff (fifth place winner in the BAA 600) all performed well in the individual events; they were joined by high scorer Paul KatzefT (fifth place win- ner in the state 300) on the relay team which also took a BAA medal. Gene Hannigan in the two mile, Don Rosen- field in the hurdles, and John Barges in the shot put were also important winners on this year’s tenacious club. CROSS COUNTRY — Despite an un- exceptional dual meet record, Brookline’s cross country team was one of the fastest improving squads in the state. Led by Captain Ross Coppelman and sophomore sensation Gene Hannigan, the team took third place in the Met League and ninth in the state meet. Jim Burke was the only other senior scorer on the largely under- classmen squad. Jay Hochberg, Nathan Gilfenbaum, Doug Rodd, Carl Goldberg and the other returning harriers are look- ing forward eagerly to a very promising 1965 season. This year, with eight returning lettermen and three medal winners from last year ' s third-place finishing team, the grapplers pose a strong threat to capture the state title. Led by co-captains Jack Alkon and Barry Finer and defending state cham- pions Senji Izumi and Bill Barges, Brook- line has already beaten last year ' s champ, Milton High. Under the direction of Coach David Marsh, the wrestlers have become an immediate success and are well on the way to building another win- ning tradition at Brookline High School. The last meet against Wellesley High School was very exciting, with Houlihan, Gilbert, Zane, and Myerow winning the relay. Chuculate and Donavan won the two hundred yard freestyle; Rainey and Slushberg placed second and third in the 50 yard sport. Unfortunately they lost this meet to Wellesley 48 to 47, but had better luck against Leominster, winning 48 to 47. GYMNASTIC TEAM — Seated: Stuart Levine, Michael Lee.
