IN APPRECIATION DR. ERNEST CAVERI Y It is my distinct honor and privilege to represent the students of the Public Schools of Brookline in paying tribute to Dr. Ernest Caverly. I am sure I do not have to tell you, his teachers and his friends, what his great responsibilities have been; as a student not in direct contact with him, 1 do not know them all. I could not comment, as could Miss Macdonald or Dr. Holland or his other administrators and teachers, on how Dr. Cav- erly has never faltered in the face of a challenge, be- cause, as is the case with most students, I have never met him. Yet, speaking for all the youth of Brookline, I know as well as anyone the greatness of his person, because I am a student in the school system which he has guided in becoming among the leading in the coun- try. His guidance and influence are reflected not only in this great school system, not only in the high standards these schools have established, but mainly, his person is reflected in the personnel he has selected and directed to serve the youth of Brookline. Thus, indirectly I do know Dr. Caverly very well, for I know the administra- tors, the principals, and the teachers who daily imple- ment his philosophy of education. They are the part of Dr. Caverly that the students know best, and they are the part of Dr. Caverly that will r emain long after he has retired. I do know also of the advances that the Brookline Public Schools have made in the past 33 years, many of which established precedents in the state and even the country. I do know of the fine education that we as students receive here in Brookline. I do know of the esteem in which the Brookline Public Schools are held by institu- tions of higher learning and educators from all parts of America. And so, all the other students of Brookline and I really do know Dr. Caverly well, although we seldom see him. No one can ever replace all he has done for us. We will miss what he stood for, what he has worked for. We will miss his great image. We forever have the benefits of what he has accomplished; and certainly after 33 years of service, he could spend anoth er 33 years reflecting with pride over these accomplishments. Speaking for the youth of Brookline, I wish Dr. Cav- erly the happiness he so richly deserves. I would also like to try to express the gratitude of some 60,000 students who have graduated from the Brookline Public Schools since 1931, and the insurmountable debt we owe this man. In the light of Dr. Caverly’s retirement, the motto of the Brookline Public Schools has been cited often as an expression of appreciation: “We serve youth that youth may learn to serve.” Here, I answer for the youth of Brookline. Dr. Ernest Roscoe Caverly has served youth — served us well, and under his guidance, his di- rection, his influence, we, the youth, have learned to serve. Dr. Caverly, we thank you. CHESTER S. WEINERMAN President, Brookline High School Council January 1 8, 1 964 14
