A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows of natural objects, classified with name and form. Goethe 5 ADMINISTRATION

To the Class of 1964; As you approach graduation I am sure you do so with mixed emotions. You look ahead with eagerness to the next step and also glance backward with some feeling at the high-school days about to end. You have been in school at a time when the public schools have become a battleground for social change as never before. The public school has become a channel for the upsurge of efforts to obtain full civil rights for all citizens. Thus, education attains new importance as an instrument for effecting the concept of human brotherhood. We have gone through a period of national tragedy, especially poignant for us in Brookline, which brought to us with stark clarity our vulnerability to the ravages of those who do not respect the rights of their fellow man, whether in high or low estate, to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We see that our true enemies are hatred and violence and realize that we all must dedicate ourselves with renewed determination to the principles on which our nation was founded. So I challenge you to go forth as militant advocates of the idea each generation must learn for itself and which seems so hard for many to accept, that we all must heed God’s command for each of us to be, indeed, his brother’s keeper. BERTRAM H. HOLLAND Headmaster 1
