PROLOGUE Our high school life, with its cri- ses and complexities, parallels the game of chess, the object of which is to capture the highly elusive “King.” Brookline High School guides us, its own special “Knights,” toward reaching these goals — our “Kings.” As we move across the board from freshman to senior year, we move towards happiness, wisdom and maturity. Before we begin another game, we reflect to see how many of us have captured our “Kings” during our high school years. It contains summaries of club ac- tivities, sports, branches of student government, and also the National Honor Society constitution. ' Fhe Stu- dent Manual is valuable to us all, and indeed is truly a Bible to the Freshman class. If you count literature as a good friend, and would like either to write or read it, the Literary Society offers you invaluable opportunities. Books gain much when they are interpreted by the inquisitive minds of the Readers’ Group, while student authors submit their original work for helpful criticism from the Writers’ Group. The club holds joint meetings to listen to guests speak on the Humanities. The Society is a worthwhile supplement to classwork and individual appreciation. PUBLIC RELATIONS AMERICAN FOREIGN FIELD SERVICE Row I: Carol Levy (V. Pres.), Seppo Nieminen, Anne-Marie Leniaire, Michael Zack (Pres.). Row 2: Albert Eckian (Treas.), Barbara Weissberg (.Sec.). The entire community may be considered a member of Brookline High’s American Field Service Club, whose purpose is to establish firmer ties with foreign countries. To support the A.F.S. program last year, the club helped parents raise money with a bond drive and an auction. This year, under the direction of faculty ad- visor Mr. Goodrich, the A.F.S. co-sponsored the Hallo- ween Hop, and sponsored a Foreign Exchange Student Day, highlighted by an assembly of foreign students. Through their contributions to school activities, Brook- line’s own exchange students, Anne-Marie Lemaire from France and Seppo Nieminen from Finland, have demonstrated the benefits of the A.F.S. program. Nanou happily receives her Girls’ League membership card. BAND The Spirit of Brookline High. I ' he sound of band music, along with the steady pulse of the bass drum, hurries you along to a rally in the gymnasium. This is the same band which, under the direction of Mr. Philpott and student conductor James Rosenberg arouses your school spirit at football games and entertains you at school assemblies. In addition, you hear this band at the annual Alumni Concert and at the Quadrangle Concert in the Spring. The Brookline Band is indeed a basic part of our school spirit, as well as an opportunity for talented musicians to gain ex- perience. Attention everybody, please. CONCERT CHOIR Under the direction of Mr. Seymour, the renowned Concert Choir of Brookline High has upheld its esteemed reputation of past years. Outstanding singers from the chorus audi- tion, and they are selected for their ability to read music. Challenging music is learned and performed before the school at a Christmas Assembly and at the Quadrangle Con- cert in April. This year officers have been added to the choir, and under President Jerald Weene, membership has been increased along with the well-earned respect of fellow stu- dents. Jerald Weene, President. Mrs. Manley, the aciviser, and Leon Jacobson, president, lead the club in informative and provocative debates, ranging in content from current event to timeless, universal subjects. This year, the novice team attended the Dartmouth College and Clark University tournaments, and they held inter- scholastic debates with North Quincy and Waltham High Schools. The purpose, in the words of the society, is: “To develop skill in debating and to train good citizens interested in affairs of democracy.” 103 Karen seems confident that she and her partner will win the debate. PERFORMERS TAKE OFF FOR NEVER-NEVER LAND The Dramatics Society in cooperation with the Brookline Young I ' eople’s Theater presented James Barrie’s beloved Peter Pan on January 29, and 30, in the Roberts Auditorium. Sophomore Kdward Belsky, who as a freshman was a win- ner of the J. Murray Kay Brize Speaking Contest, played the role of Peter Pan. Belsky has been a star ol the Boston Chil- dren’s I’heater for several years. Ronald Hunter, president of the Society, played the dual role of Mr. Darling and the nefarious Captain Hook. An- nalee Cohen portrayed Wendy Darling, and Jane Adelman was cast in the role of Liza. The cast used the Kirby Mying Machines which have flown such stars as Maude Adams and Mary Martin. The machines were loaned to the Dramatics Society by the Broad- way producer Peter Lawrence. We can fly; we can fly; we can fly. 104 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Leon Jacobson, President. By maintaining high standards, the Honor Society hopes to be a stimulus and a goal for underclassmen. ORCHESTRA Mr. Joslin, Orchestra Leader. The orchestra, tuning up for the Quadrangle Concert. The orchestra of Brookline High School needs few laudatory remarks after the students have heard it perform. The musicians’ skills are revealed by the varying and interesting repertoire which Mr. Joslin carelully arranges. Their activities include a concert in February, a spring concert with the choir, and performances for the elementary schools. The purpose of the orchestra, as well as to provide for the school’s enjoyment, is to give interested and talented students an opportunity to increase their skill by playing in an orchestra. io6 SCIENCE FAIR What did you say the name of that plant was, Richie? One look at the monthly report of the Central Treasury of the efficiently totaled statistics of the Bank Staff every other Tuesday would be enough to dispel your doubts. Through these two services passes the money of all the organizations at Brookline High School. The Bank Staff, headed by Mr. Dunbar, is com- prised of fourteen students from all houses in- cluding a staff messenger and a publicity com- mittee. The Central Treasury, directed by Mr. Ehnes and ably staffed by students of the busi- ness department, performs a function well appre- ciated by all student treasurers. Most of US would agree that one of the bases of sound government is effective ad- ministration of justice. Brookline High’s Court of Justice, with Mr. Howard as fac- ulty adviser and Helaine Levi as Chief Justice, insures the effectiveness of our stu- dent government by advising action against those pupils who disobey school regula- tions. Nine justices, two defense attorneys from each house, a prosecuting attorney, and a sergeant-at-arms comprise the Court. In addition to the several cases it han- dles in closed sessions each month, the Court this year extended its jurisdiction over honor studies, and it rewrote its constitution. Most effective, of course, is sensible self-discipline, one of the Court’s highest goals. Girls’ League, one of the truly versatile clubs at Brookline High, in- cludes in its yearly program: social meetings, teas, a volunteer service program, a White Elephant Sale, a Fall Fashion Show, a Christmas Workshop, a Song Contest, and an Eighth Grade Party. Fed by Miss Driscoll, faculty adviser, and Karen Conry, president, the League serves the school further by providing Junior and Senior Advisers to answer the questions of bewildered Freshmen. This year, the League will be especially remembered for its record membership -950 girls — , and for the Seniors’ presentation of an original musical comedy, “Muddy River’s Music Man,” which took place, along with the in- stallation of officers, at the annual Supper Party. Everyone should fill a Red Cross box. The Junior Red Cross, one ot Brookline High’s best known and most active service organizations, led by President Joan Winer, has accom- plished many worthwhile deeds this year. The annual gift box drive in the fall and the enrollment drive in March are two of the club’s better known activities. There are, however, many other equally im- portant achievements such as hospital volunteers work and corre- spondence with students in countries which have benefited by the Junior Red Cross. This organization, under the able guidance of Mr. Weeks, is open to all students willing to help less fortunate people and is of a vital importance to the school, the community and the world. 114 LIBRARY AIDES Row ; Janice Kahn, Jacqueline Magar, Nadine Churnick. There are many opportunities at Brookline High School for those students wishing to volunteer their time and ability in order to help someone else. Be- coming a library aide enables the individual to assist others, as well as to gain valuable knowledge of library science. The aide is of great service to the school as he guides fellow students in locating material, helps the Librarian stack the shelves, stamps books correctly, and delivers newspapers to faculty members daily. Identified by Blue and Gold armbands, these volunteers provide a sig- nificant service in keeping the library efficient. The locker marshals, with Mr. Wells’ he lp, keeps the students’ lockers in good condition. They are always ready to search for a lost key, a misplaced book, or a missing coat. So do our other mar- shals, under Captain Lenny Magazine, help to lessen school problems. Rallies have been more orderly as a result of effective marshalling; the lunchroom has been comparatively neat; and cor- ridor traffic has been steady. To supplement the marshals, infractions against the rules and regula- tions of the school are tried by the Court of Justice. MARSHALS Leonard Magazine, Captain. Mr. Jordan, Adviser. Rallies are planned by the members, and they are promoted by the sale of carnations, book covers, shakers, and tickets for sports events. We hope to see you at the game tomorrow. Without your support the Spirit of Brookline High cannot exist. STUDENT COUNCIL David I evenson, President. Mr. Wright, Mr. Rinaldi, Advisers. Row I: Myron Fox, Alan Rachins fV. Just as our nation has a Congress representing all the states, so does Brookline High have a school Council representing all four houses. Demonstrating the efficacy of a democratic student government, the Council, aided by faculty advisors Mr. Wright and Mr. Rinaldi and President David Levinson, estab- lishes school regulations, oversees the activities ot the houses and clubs, and provides a schedule for club meetings. This year the Council accomplished a great deal by organizing the Girls’ League Room and the study halls during lunch, sending representatives to P.T.O. meetings, selling banners, and spon- soring the successful second annual Winter Carnival. Also, the Council ex- panded to thirty-five members and, for the first time, held an all-school presi- dential election. That Brookline High’s Congress is a truly important power in school affairs is clear. CLUBS AMATEUR Richard explains the intricacies of a ham radio to eager listeners. The functions of the Amateur Radio Club are to arouse students’ interest in electronics, and later, to help them obtain licenses to operate “ham” radios. Members of the club visit neighboring radio and television stations and participate in Civil Defense services. Thus, students feel the importance, as well as the thrill, of communicating with people thousands of miles away. BIOLOGY CLUB Dici you ever get that sudden urge to dissect a frog and find that your desire is frustrated by a definite lack of available material? If so, the Biology Club provides both facilities for future scientists and answers to ques- tions which are not treated in detail in the regular school course. Led by Mr. Fox and President David Seligson, the club maintains a small zoo, makes numer- ous field trips, such as the bird walk at Larz Anderson Park, and supports the Science Fair. The members of the Future Homemakers of America agree with the adage, “There’s no place like home.” To prove that this cliche is true the club sponsors a cake sale, a puppet show, and its members learn how to prepare unusual foods and serve the finished in a beautiful setting. In an age of frozen foods and paper plates, the do- it-yourself spirit of the F.H.A. is a hope- ful sign towards “gracious living.” Cake baking is more fun than work for these future homemakers. Chances are you found that you were being invited to a meeting of Le Cercle Francais. At six meetings annually, through play, panel discussions, and in- formal French singing, the good French student learns about both the French language and French culture. Thus, the club, led by President Roberta Mark, pro- motes better understanding of another country that displays its “red, white, and blue.” FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Throughout our childhood, and many of the years that follow it, our lives are greatly influenced by teachers. It is important, therefore, that high school students interested in teaching afford themselves the excellent preparation offered by the Future Teachers of America. This is a fundamental question which the Physics Club seeks to answer. President Robert Dreyfuss presides at bi-monthly meetings where the club members discuss and ex- periment with such phenomena as elec- tricity and gravity, and where they plan projects for the Science Fair. In this age of technology, trained physicists are badly needed. The Physics Club provides val- uable background for men who perhaps one day will answer this demand. VARSITY FOOTBALL Larry Margolian Left Guard Chuck Reardon Center BROOKLINE TRIPS ORANGE, 22-15. Late Rally Saves Towners by Bill Anthony A twenty-yard t ouchdown pass from left halfback Kevin Mahoney to right end Peter Gorcyzk climaxed a brilliant second half rally by Brookline and gave the towners a 22-15 win over its I ' hanksgiving Day rival, Newton. ' I ' he winning TD pass, with only six minutes left in the game, resulted when Newton’s powerhouse left halfback Dave Connor fumbled on his own twenty-yard line and the ball was recov- ered by Mahoney. On the next play, quarterback Bob Don- ovan pitched to Mahoney who chucked the pigskin to Gorcyzk in the end zone. From the three minute mark of the first quarter until the dramatic fourth quarter, Brookline fought an uphill battle. On the opening kickoff the Red and Blue looked like they were in charge of matters. Newton’s Ralph Guzzetti fumbled on his own 27. After an exchange of fum- bles, Brookline’s stalwart fullback Sullivan carried to Newton’s 30 from where Mahoney sped off right tackle to the two yard line. Sullivan cracked right tack- le to score but failed on the PAT attempt. Tigers Take Lead Newton’s offensive power came to life in the second quarter. Four plays later, Dick Paaso slammed home for the score. Paaso’s 17 yard PAT try (after a five yard penalty) was good. The Orange still had the scoring spirit in its blood after Paaso’s end zone kick gave Brookline a first down on the 20. Bill O’Donnell pounced on a Mahoney fumble. Connor went to the 16; Paaso to the 8. Connor hit right tackle to the one foot line from where he scored off left tackle. His dash around right end add- ed the extra two points. Brookline, stopped up the middle by a determined line led by O’Brien, switched to a series of back-in-motion, slant, and end-sweep plays. Mahoney and Sullivan led the ground attack. With fourth and two yards to go, Mahoney fum- bled. The ball flew loose in the air and into Newton’s Bill Sellers’ hands. But Bill was immediately tackled, fumbled and Brookline re- covered on the 12. On the next play. Bill Cavanaugh slid around left end to score. Lothrop added the extra points on a pass play. Newton Fumble Costly The decisive play of the game commenced when right tackle Joe Davis re- covered Paul Guzzi’s fum- ble on Newton’s 19. Sulli- van advanced the ball to the 10 from where Donovan rolled out and ran to the four. But Newton’s defense dug in to stop Brookline with O’Brien throwing Donovan for a big loss and Sellers stopping Cavanaugh on a fourth down play. With Newton in com- mand, Connor hit off right tackle but fumbled on the 20 where Mahoney recov- ered. The Orange made an- other giant effort to score. With Terr in control Dali- candro went on a reverse to the 50 yard stripe. Passo, Connor and Carle gained first downs, but on a fourth and two situation from the 20, Paaso failed to get the necessary yardage and Brookline ran out the clock. 152-383 The End. Bobby Sullivan breaks away with the ball on his way for a touchdown. The winning team. A large measure of youthful ex- uberance is both normal and de- sirable. 1 his haste, to be truly worthwhile, however, must be accompanied by an increasing awareness of ourselves and our world. .At the moment, this world is Brookline High School which adequately arms us — its “Knights” — with the experience and knowledge necessary to cap- ture our “Kings.” The reality which our symbolic chess game represents is found within ourselves. For some of us, the depth of our understanding is the measure of our progress. THIS BOOK IS K)B USE IN THE LIBRARY BUILWNG ONLY ■ L ' V ' ' mmm iiS Xv ' t . • ■ t
