WENDELL E. SMIIH Shailer Housemaster To the graduating class of 1946 belongs the unique honor of functioning for three years while a total war was in progress. That the curriculum of Brookline High School was altered to meet existing conditions, you know. It was inevitable that a period of confusion and experi- mentation should follow our entry into the war. Yet you, as members of the class of 1946, met this transition with responsibility and cooperation. You did everything in your power to let your patriotism grow into an active working force in the school, the town and on the field of battle itself. And now, as seniors, you are the first gradu:iting class in this post-war period. Much de- pends upon your attitude toward the grave problems which now confront us. I hope that the tradition of Brookline High — the tradition of tolerance and understanding, based on knowl- edge, will serve you well. Ideas and ideals are more necessary to strengthen democracy in our new world than the power of weapons. Yesterday your country fought with guns; tomorrow her weapons will be your ideas and ideals. May God give you to see the right, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations. 8
