TYLER KEPNER We honor him for his successes in all phases of the Social Studies world; we thank him for his consistent sympathy with us in all our endeavors. 5 AKERS HOUSE BOYS IN SERVICE They serve our land on far flung battlefields, And heavy is the sword that each one wields. Yet soon to join them in the bloody job, Are other classmates whom this war will rob. WALTER J. ASPINWALL GERARD BONELLI JOHN F. BROWN, JR. THOMAS BRUCE JAMES CAZANAS GEORGE W. COO K, JR. LEO W. CUNNINGHAM FRANK EBELL WILLIAM C. FARRELL FREDERICK GOLDMAN HARVEY GRAHAM RICHARD A. GUILLOTTE HERBERT J. HAWES PATRICK J. HAWES EDMUND HELLER, JR. FRANCIS R. JAMES FRED A. MacDONALD LEE P. MAHONEY ROBERT F. MAY ROBERT McPHEE MARTIN MEAD CHARLES MERZBACK FRANK MILLS RICHARD MILTON ROBERT J. MULVEY JEROME J. PEARLSTEIN ALBERT F. SALTALAMACCHIA STANLEY SPECTOR CHARLES E. WAITE PAUL T. WATERHOUSE EDMUND WHITE PLYNN E. WILLIAMS AKERS HOUSE HOUSEMASTER For four years we have lived together happily, sharing our work and our play, our sorrows and our pleasure. You have been busily at work writing the recommendations which now we must transcribe for your use as you take the next big step forward. During these years you have grown in social grace as well as mentally and physically; you have learned to make adjustments and allowances in a way which will be useful in your more adult life. You have made mistakes — but how else does one grow? Some have written wisely; some, not so wisely — but surely you all must know that with the transcript of that recommendation, which you have written for us to give you, will go the interpretation of friends who have enjoyed you, your questions, and your confidences; — yes, even your occasional lapses from grace! Keep us informed of your progress wherever it may be, come back to visit us — either personally or by letter. Know that you are always welcome. God speed you all in your coming journey! EMMA POLAND To the Class of 1944: You graduate in the dawn of a new day. To be sure, only the first faint light now brightens the horizon. But the world-peace which many of you will help to secure is to be the heritage of your genaration. The coming of this peace will open the frontiers to opportunities as limitless as the depths of the earth and of the skies above. For man can no longer live in the two-dimensional world of the past: he can not live unto himself alone. The most challenging frontier for you as pioneers will be that of exploration and discovery in the field of human relahionships. New concepts are in the air. Yours will be the privilege of shaping them for the general good of mankind everywhere. We shall miss you. We thank you for the unquestioned record you leave with us. And with you, we, too. look confidenily to the future. God-speed your journey. Sincerely yours, WILFRED H. RINGER, Headmaster Cordial Greetings to the Class of 1944: As you leave the familiar routine of high school days and move forward into accelerated training courses, into war work of all kinds, into the armed services of your country, you are very much in our thoughts. The school has tried to give you breadth of vision, tolerance toward those with whom you do not always agree, sympathetic understanding of those less fortunate than yourselves. Primarily your task has been to fit yourselves for the work ahead whatever it may be. It has not been easy to keep your perspective in these uncertain days. It has not been easy for the faculty to realize that you scarcely remember a world at peace. For the most part you have kept your heads — and we are proud of you. The war should show us that we are dependent on each other, that neither nation nor individual can live a thoughtless, selfish life, if we are to make what we wish of our community and national life. May the poets dream of our loved coun- try come true through you: America, America, God mend thine every flaw; Confirm thy soul in self-control Thy liberty in law! or to use the words of another writer, Make you the world a bit more beautiful, and better because you have been in it. Keep in touch with us at school. you. Remember we are always glad to hear from Cordially yours, MARY W. SAWYER, Dean of Girls 9 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ROW !: Miss Lewis, Mr. Hoiland, Miss Liden. LUCY PARKS 61 RING AND PIN COMMITTEE CLASS DAY COMMITTEE DANCE COMMITTEE GIFT COMMITTEE 62 Teachers, Friends, Classmates: This evening ' s gathering is the last social occasion of our high school career. The memory of our four years in Brookline High School is something that will linger with us throughout our entire life. At this time it is only fitting that we pay tribute to the people of the town who have made such a school as Brook- line High possible and to our teachers and coaches for the fine training and friendly courtesy that we have always received from them. As a result of their unselfish sacrifices and patience we are fully prepared to enter the next stage of our lives. To the majority of the boys this will mean entering some branch of the armed forces and to others it will mean going to College or securing a job. Serving such a grand group of fellows and girls, in my capacity as President, has indeed been a pleasure. I want to thank all of you for your fine cooperative spirit, which you all so generously possess, and wish you the very best of luck in your future work. THE PRESIDENTS WELCOME Parents, Teachers, Friends: The Class of 1944 extends to all of you assembled here a cordial welcome. We are well aware that whatever success we have attained in our High School career is due to you, our parents, whose sympathetic love and devotion has been a shining light to guide us on the road to success; to you, our teachers, whose fine training and unselfish sacrifices have made possible this hour of triumph; and to you, our friends, whose genial interest has been a source of inspiration and encouragement. Graduation is always an important event, but especially important to the graduates of this class, since they are privileged to receive the seal of the school whereas many of our class mates have been obliged to leave without it. To these classmates, who are now serving in the armed forces, we extend our sincere good wishes for success in the great task they are now undertaking. The majority of the boys in this graduating class are preparing to enter some branch of the armed forces. My only hope is that the element of time will hasten the goal of victory so that these boys will be able to return to their homes and loved ones in safety and in peace. My very best wishes and luck to you, one and all. 63 CLASS HISTORY i :c We offer our deepest apologies to the authors of Evangeline, H.M.S. Pinafore, Antisep- Baby and the Prophylactic Pup and Anchors Away , for borrowing the rhythm of their poems. When laymen and sages All down through the ages Pore over past history, They ' ll find ' 44 In the midst of a war And the outcome deep mystery. Should they want to know more Bout our class ' 44 They need buy a Muriv and look, While the world went to pot We made our own little spot On the page of the Golden Book. So with an eye to the sages All down through the ages We offer this history So it shan ' t come to pass That the lore of our class Shall ever be mystery. These were years of upheaval — of Henry . Kaisers and hepcats, Frankie in bow tie and zoot suit, making ns swoon in our bobby socks. A” books and B” books and ”C” books, rayshuns” and rashuns” and Russians. No butter, no sugar, no coffee; with our tires worn down and no retreads. Loud from his freezing apartment, the ignorant sniveling griper Griped, and in answer defiant, came a call from his draft board. We had a V for Victory. We had no sugar in our tea. We put 10% into bonds and stamps And at dimout time we dimmed the lamps And at dimout time we dimmed the lamps. The Yanks across the seas Banged up To jo Solly, please!” We brought the roof above Hitler down. Riveters at Lockheed went to town Riveters at Lockheed went to town. Women riveters at Lockheed Performing their patriotic war deed Went to town. As the Democrats and Republica is discussed the Income Tax, The girls on Hollywood Boulevard appeared a’ wearing slacks. We took our daily vitamins, the A, B, C’s and D’s, And sang Speak Low” and Mairzy Doats” as often as we pleased. We learned First Aid and airplane shapes and poison gases too, But if we were bombed, you bet your life, ive wouldn’t have knoivn what to do! The time had come — twas ' 41 In September long ago Miss Poland greeted us, freshmen green, (That ' s a new color you know!) But soon we learned bout elections and things, And just what we couldn ' t do. And though at first we lost our way — Miss Poland pulled us through. Now we weren ' t always that freshman green But soon acquired a lovely sheen Of blue and gold — but looky here! Examine our record and soon you ' ll cheer. To prove we had some genii Look at our number in Alpha Pi; And if you want some geniorum, Take a peek at our Student Forum. ' Twas the Akers house sophs who urged the start Of choral reading with Uncle Art, And if you search a little further You ' ll find the clue to the Cathedral Murder. And ours was the football team, — man alive! That knocked out poor Newton to the count of five An d who patched them up again? Hmm? — Could be, Twas the girls of the famous Auxiliary! When they handed us the Sagamore, (Far be it from us to brag), With a little of this and some more of that We doctored up its sag! We always made the Honor Roll (Not that we want to crow) In scholastic ability we topped them all For us the bugles blow! We were terriffic, you know, in dramatics (Far be it from us to boast) The same can be said of athletics — Let ' s drink ourselves a toast! Akers away, at last, and Lincoln too! Farewell to high school — joys? ' Twas tough to pull us through! Take your last look at school Through tear-dimmed eyes. Until we meet again, These memories forever we shall prize. They forgot, say the sages with a shake of the head, They forgot all their heros, living and dead. Forgot how they fought as only heroes can, Forgot the steaming hell in the jungles of Bataan. Forgot in their foolish laughter and their senseless poetry Forgot in their senior gatherings with their gay hilarity. We remember, you are wrong! we cry with one accord. We remember well the treachery and bloody fight abroad. This is our last fling at youth, tomorrow we re young no more, Tomorrow we meet Destiny and hear the cannon roar. It ' s our last song, our last laugh, so do not bid it cease But let the echoes drift away ' till they reach the shores of Peace! 64 LAST WILL AMD TESTAMENT We, the class of 1944, being of sound mind and in full possession of our faculty, do hereby ordain and de- clare this to be our last will and testament. R. right where we found him. 14. We leave David Hamburg to the lunch room. He can’t be any worse than the ones they ' ve been serving us. 15. We leave Mr. Bates still trying to clean up Tobacco Road. 17. We leave Arnie Frank a paper doll that he can call his own. 18. We leave Kent Tice, Jack Keith, and Charlie Osen- ton a corner table at Ken ' s, hoping they ' re not under it. 19. We leave Don Purcell to the Ballet Russe. 20. We leave Joe Foss and Dick Isadore still matching Zero for zero. We, the undersigned, hereby assume full and equal responsibility for this our last will and testament except for Janice Berg who pleads ignorance of all subtleties herein contained, and hereby appoint Miss Deal and Mrs. Hennessy as executrices thereof. LEVIN FRANCIS O ' HEARN MYRON SHARAF GOLDYE WEINSTEIN Class Attorneys CLASS POEM THE PRICE OF LIBERTY Can Freedom come without its wage of woe, Or men speak thoughts and print their views, Praise God in any tongue, and kneel in pews Of many different faiths? Or can they know Their children shall not fear, nor dread to go Without a bit of food; nor have to choose Mean Death or feudal, fawning bondsman ' s dues? Can men be free and slavery never know? Can all these blessed things expenseless come? The answer now, in war, is plain to see: That manhood ' s blood and women ' s tears must fall, And battles harsh be fought and hearts grow numb, For men must die in order to be free. This is the price of freedom for us all. — Donald Puree m m J..:. Achievement, worth, and leadership, Activity and scholarship, For these they win the shining key, A symbol of hard-earned Victory. CHESS CLUB For the king and queen they vie; For a fool ' s mate they try. These terms may not mean much to you, But to the Chess Club they certainly do. 96 COURT OF JUSTICE Here we have our Court of Judges; If B.H.S ' . name one smudges, They decide the offender ' s fate. In student government, their force has weight. Their motto, continuing with this rhyme, Is ' Let the punishment fit the crime. ' So when you hear The Court , Beware! But don ' t be worried; they ' ll play fair. MARSHAL FORCE Students be prudent, wary, and wise! The marshals of Brookline have a gleam in their eyes. Our lunchroom must be spotless clean, Or else we ' ll rouse the marshals ' spleen. Freshman, remember, the mashal you see Is a symbol of order and authority. He ' s not there to talk to, except as a guide; A worthy school servant, trusted and tried. Dick Brooker, the captain of this force And Teddy, assistant, chart a smooth course. Disorder and smoking, it loudly berates. So, hats off to the marshals; three cheers for Buck Bates! SCHOOL COUNCIL We have a school council Which sets down the rule Of all the activities existing in school. It fights for a government of, for, and by Those who would liberate our Brookline High. 98 ENGLISH CLUB You who like good books and such Would enjoy the English club very much. You ' ll benefit in many ways By meeting authors of books and plays. LIBRARY STAFF Hush-a-bye students When the library you near, You must be quiet, And that ' s very clear. Library staff members Check off your books, And help you to find Those escaping your looks. RADIO CLUB Like Orson Welles from fhe land of Mars, They ' re quite a sensation — our radio stars! They emote and announce with perfection and sk For listening pleasure, they fill the bill. 100 PRIZE SPEAKING Twelve students standing on the stage Upon Prize Speaking Day; As they began, the noise began; The judges ran away. But seriously speaking, (And we don ' t expect a prize), Their recitations did not fail To open wide our eyes. Originals, original; Declamations, fine! When our ex. tern, speakers spoke, Did they give us a line! DRAMATIC WORKSHOP They whistle while they work On costumes, scenery, and props. They ' re never known to shirk, These people of this shop. They learn to put on plays And all that such entail. Their progress will amaze. They ' re sure to never fail. DRAMATIC SOCIETY Please to remember The 17th of December, The day of the three one-act plays. And when in the spring, The play was the thing, We could not find adequate praise. 102 STUDENT FORUM Here sits Mickey Sharaf, Head of the Student Forum. Alice is counting the members To see if there is a quorum. The quorum is met; they begin Discussions long and hot. Concerning present-day affairs, Their opinions differ a lot. They shot an arrow in the air; The spot it lands they know not where; No matter how hard they try, It ' s either too low or too high. ARCHERY 142 MORE TRUTH THAN POETRY PASSING OUT This little piggy went to classes; And this little piggy stayed home; But both little piggies needed passes, And woe if they had none! The first little piggy had to go To the nurse cause he didn ' t feel well. He had no pass to show, And this is what befell. He felt so very ill He went right to the nurse. She gave to him a pill. Immediately he felt worse. When upon returning, He did not have his pass, His teacher was so burning She threw him out of class. The second little piggy was good And he brought a note from mother. He did just what he should, But still had lots of bother. First he waited in line And got the little blue slip His teachers had to sign Just for one little trip. Supposin ' that he lost it! — But we won ' t go into that. The trouble it would cost him Would drive one off his bat. MIDDLE NAME MYSTERY Twinkle, twinkle, middle names; How we wonder what the shame ' s, Sandwiched twixt the first and third. By the students, never heard. Trask H. and Harry J, Mary W. and Paul A, Rachel B. and Madeline I, — But ours is not to reason why. A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME— We don ' t mean to be insulting, But this is a smelly school, For the odors that permeate the corridors To the nose are very cruel. In the Chem Department it ' s easy to tell When we synthesize HuS ; Also, when Joe was pasting the candids It was even worse, we guess. From 335, or thereabouts, Comes the scent of formaldehyde For dissected frogs and insect pests — Gosh, we almost died! The foods classes too, contribute their share, For ' round near 207 Pickles, onions, and gingerbread All smell to high heaven. Thus we prove our statement. Does anyone have perfumes To purify old B.H.S. And take away the fumes? STREAM OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS This next poem we ' re writing to fill up space We really have nothing to say: Have you seen Arsenic and Old Lace ? What is the price of hay? Will Willie get out of the wringer? We wonder what Faulkner is like. Is Frankie your favorite singer? Down with the German Reich! Mr. Merrill likes his cadet teacher; Mr. Bartlett, Mr. Will iams too. We dion ' t think she ' ll be a teacher long; Tell us now, do you? Are Lorraine and Ken still pal-in ' ? What was for lunch today? How ' s Miss Nichols, Alan? Remember that crime doesn ' t pay. 143 144 VJJ 148 150 MAIN LIBRARY BROOKLINE PUBLIC LIBRARY 361 Washington Street Brookline, MA 02445 m HOOITR FOR use (N THE LIBRARY BUMS ckr
