Tim T 4 TTLER could s1t IH pleasant weather The v1ew 'was very pretty especlally the sunsets After usmg fh1S bulldlng all the sprlng and summer the observers wlth the help of our New Chlef secured the use of the schoolhouse 1n the v1c1n1ty Wh1Ch was s1tuated ony a few hundred yards from the first post It was a matter of only a short trme to have the record book bmoculars and tele phone moved to the new locat1on The town furnlshed our wood to heat the bulldlng and also some new wall board to part1t1on off part of the room so as to heat our room more easlly In our new bu1ld1ng there was a nlce large desk black boards wh1ch have been used for bulletm boards and some and recltatlon seats We also have e ec tr1c llghts here wh1ch make lt much more conven1ent for those on the nlght sh1fts About the txme we moved to our new locatxon our Chxef Observer reslgned and we had another takmg her place ID Sep tember of 1942 We have been very fortunate ln havmg so many of our summer resxdents help out at the Post All went well for a whxle untll our New Chlef was slck so that we had to have seats In the early fall of 1943 word was re L6lVed to close the Post except on Wed nesday afternoon from one to five Thx has be n fa1thfully kept up by a few We had a class ln Alrcraft Recogn 'IOP ID November 1943 wh1ch was attended by only a few as many people th1nk It un n cessary to study alrplanes now We hone that we wont be seemg any enemy a1r craft ln our area but have trled to do our b1t as 'ong as the Government deemed It necessary PAULINE CLO-SSON 4b ROLLER SKATING Roller skatlnff IS a very good sport as Well as a very good pastlme It UIVQS us more BXCFCISC and more fun than any th1ng I can th1nk of at present This s true 1n most places It IS more so 1r Brookl1n because here when we want to go roller skatlng we have to walk five mlles to the nearest r1nk and after skat mg all evenmg we have to walk the five mxles home agam unless we re lucky enough to catch a rlde It 1S very fascl natlng to watch the wonderful spllls that are taken by the roller skaters but It IS much more fun to be one of the skaters who takes a splll and w1nds up Wlth hls legs around the closest chalr All this stuns you a l1ttle at first but when you get up you re rarlng to go agaln Of course I usually end up wlth a few bumps and floor burns but 1f you want a good even1ngs entertalnment and want to get some GXCICISE mto those advlce and hop on a palr of roller skates and wedge those wheels down a llttle' CHESTER WEBBER 44 A MOST HAPPY CHRISTMAS Wlll you tak her back Jan1e'P asked the pleadlng vclce of the mother of nme teen year old Jane Allen Oh but mother 1ts only four more days unt11 Chr1stmas and It would be ter travelmg Why cant she stay Wlth us untll after Chr1stmas9 Becau e a chlld two years old should be at home fo Chrlstmas day and 1f you wont tak her Ill have to Jane went out of the room slammlng the door as she went A fine Chrlstmas Ill have thought Jane but I suppose Ill have to go The next mornlng found Jane and her two year old nlece comfortably seated ln the Long ra1l Pul man speedlng toward Boston At SIX that evenme they arrxved 1n Boston and were met by the httle glrls mother Well doesnt that take the cake thought Jane here I travel 300 mlles and she doesnt even thank me for lt My but she sure IS apprec1at1ve A volce broke through her thoughts saym Im o rappy to have Fern home for Chrlstmas and honestly SIS I wouldnt have mconvenlenced you but I was so s1ck J A 3 1 ' 15 . , , , . T110 TATTI EI? and wasnt able to be up unt1l two days ago Oh thats perfectly all r1ght I drdnt mmd brmgmg her up 1n the least b1t re plled Jane But under her breath she Sald not much ' But S1s you must stay and spend Chrlstmas w1th us Well have a wonder ful tlme No thank you repl1ed Jane I th1nk Ill go back th1s evenmg and then per haps I can get home Just ln trme for the Chrlstmas tree I th1nk I can make bet ter connectlons on the bus so I ll take that Well don t say anymore Im not staylng Jane remalned at her slsters for onlv 1. few hours and then caught the bus for home They had rxdden for about 50 mlles when the bus began to sputter and all of a sudden xt stopped It took the mechan ICS from the garage four hours to make the repalrs and once more they contmued on thelr Journey Everythlng went very peacefully unt11 the bus reached Portland The regular bus had left and there would not be another one out for two hours I wlsh Id never agreed to take Ferme back home Look at all the messes Ive been ln ever SIHCC I started groaned Jane 1n despalr The bus was due 1n Elwood at 8 40 p m and It dldnt arrxve unt1l 3 40 the nest mornlng The llttle town of Elwood was deserted The e was only a small cafe open Jane book her bag ln her hand and entered the Cafe May I help you'J a coarse vo1ce asked Jane Yes I d l1ke a cup of colTee and a ham sandwlch That all'P Yes repl1ed Jane m rather a cold vo1ce Jane sat munch1ng her sandwlch and suddenly she heard a n1ce vo1ce talkmg and she lxstened People really dont understand how thankful they should be to be able to be home at Chrxstmas What I wouldn t glV9 to spend my holldays wlth my parents 1n stead of spendlng It here 1n thls Cafe playxng M P to a bunch of drunks The same wlth me thought Jane I d l1ke to be home too but I m 26 mlles from home and theres no bus that leaves for two days that goes out that far Well I may as well get to a hotel and get at room May I carry your case for you You look rather tlred a klnd vo1ce asked Jane Jane turned and lt was the vo1ce of the person who had been talklng a mo ment before Thank you It 1S heavy and I am tlred repl1ed Jane They talked a b1t and ex changed names on the way to the hotel The soldler deposlted Janes luggage on the steps of the hotel and Jane went 1n sxde thankful that she could go to bed Jane Jumped xnto bed and trled to sleep Her thoughts were runnlng all over each other She kept remember1ng the hate ful remarks she d sald to everyone Was that the r1ght way9 Jane shd from her bed and fell to her knees and prayed She prayed as shed never prayed before and asl ed God to forglve her s1ns and to take away her hateful ways MISS Allen M1ss Allen Jane awoke w1th a start Was someone calllng her Theres a phone call for you a bell boy sald Jane quxckly donned a dressmg gown and answered the phone Agaln she heard the H106 VOICE she d heard ln the Cafe the vo1ce of the person who had been so klnd as to take her bag for her I understood last n1ght that you wont be able to get home for Chrlstmas e1ther so as today 1 open house and everyone lS welcome Id love to have you come to camp for dmner and there IS muslc after wards Have you somethmg else to do?
