A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Students: Education is a preparation for complete living , in a most complex society, and a preparation for citizenship in its broadest sense. I recognize the supreme worth of the individual and his dignity con- sistent with the genral welfare. Among the worthy personal goals for living is an understanding of, and respect for, one's self, in- cluding the self-discipline which comes through the basic moral and spiritual values. In America our most cherished goal is freedom. Progress towards freedom comes with the accptance of the disciplines that freedom entails. The price of our freedom is discipline in the character of the individual. In a totalitarian society in which the state comes first and public policy is not determined by the will of the majority, youth needs merely to be trained to believe, obey, and fight. But in our great democracy, America needs straight-thinking citizens who contribute to an informed public opinion that firmly supports public policy. f Scholarship is, therefore, important in a democracy because the quality of a man's thinking depends upon the range, the validity, and the clarity of his ideas. A high level of general education is necessary to perpetuate the great American way of life. It is my hope that every student in the Brookland school will always up- hold our heritage, and preserve our great freedom. May your education here have been of the nature to help you think straight in these trying times when our enemy, Communism, knocks at the front door of Democracy. Whatever you do, please do not open that door.
