I recognize the supreme worth of the individual and his dignity con- sistent with the genral welfare. Among the worthy personal goals for living is an understanding of, and respect for, one's self, in- cluding the self-discipline which comes through the basic moral and spiritual values. In America our most cherished goal is freedom. Progress towards freedom comes with the accptance of the disciplines that freedom entails. The price of our freedom is discipline in the character of the individual. In a totalitarian society in which the state comes first and public policy is not determined by the will of the majority, youth needs merely to be trained to believe, obey, and fight. But in our great democracy, America needs straight-thinking citizens who contribute to an informed public opinion that firmly supports public policy. f Scholarship is, therefore, important in a democracy because the quality of a man's thinking depends upon the range, the validity, and the clarity of his ideas. A high level of general education is necessary to perpetuate the great American way of life. It is my hope that every student in the Brookland school will always up- hold our heritage, and preserve our great freedom. May your education here have been of the nature to help you think straight in these trying times when our enemy, Communism, knocks at the front door of Democracy. Whatever you do, please do not open that door. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES To the students: You are fast reaching the top rung on the ladder of your high school educa- tion. I have seen many of you come up through the grades and I have an admi ration for you who have come this far For the seniors I wish a happy and su cessful life. For the underclassmen I hope to see each of you some day in caps and gowns. Best regards, .xv Edward Nelms High School Principal C To The Annual Staff: we are very grateful to you for your efforts in assembling and arranging materials which will make up this years Annual. Your greatest reward ' will be the satisfaction of knowing a job well done. Algebra was our favorite subject. On our report cards F's stacked up, but to us that meant favorite. Even in our first high school year matrimonial fever struck us and we lost Juanita Hayes to Edward Willey. Then our thoughts turned to basketball with Bay always win- ning. With the foundation of our Freshman year behind us, we elected Mr. Thomas for our sponsor. He was our world history teacher, and boy! could he draw! The matri- monial fever of our freshmen year broke out in an epidemic, By the time our Junior year began we had lost four, Norma Lou Wester to Amos Hamilton, Marvel Gean Reed to Dennis Ray Hendley, Robert Horn to Ann Couch, and Sue Burton married Leon Brown but she is continuing her education at Brookland. We also lost Jimmy Richardson, Joe Robinson, Wanda Maynard, Leonard Lingenfel- ter, Donald Shopher, and J. A, Brust. With so many losses our gains were Patsy Layne, Wilma Jean Hampton, Leroy Wheaten. We also lost our principal and superintendent, Mr, and Mrs. Clingman Hinson. With our greatly reduced class we started our Junior year, with Red Nelms as our sponsor and Mr. Harris as our superintendent, Our gains this year were Patsy Markum, John Roedell and Joy Towery. Our losses were Leroy Whea ton, ,Wilma Jean Hamptong Mable Chipman married J. S. Bradley and Bonnie Koonce married J. E. Simpson. Our Junior play was Hill Billy Courtship. fNever forget dress rehearsal-- we played marbles and jumping rope.J One of our happiest experiences was going on our Junior - Senior trip to Rockaway Beach, Mo. We started our final and long awaited Senior year by regaining an old class- mate, Wanda Maynard, and losing Gaylon Dickinson. Most seniors have a few senior privileges, but we had none. All we got was critizism from the whole faculty. Although our Senior year isn't over we hope that many happy experiences are ahead of us, This is the class history of the Senior Class of 1953 as we have lived it the past four years. . 3 Survivors BEVERLY ANN NOBLE nBevn Typing-Who's got my typewnterl' l Saying-Oo-la-la, Hobby-Photography Sport-Swimming Song-Tell Me Why DONALD SHOPHER Frank Buck Plans Career in Zoology Hobby-Animal collecting Sport-Hunting and fishing Saying-Bring 'em back ahve Song-America Seam am oggzm DANELL TAYLOR Beeps Fun? I suppose everyone wonders what has happened to each of his old classmates fand they are quite old by now, you knowj. I still write occasionally to my three old pals, Wanda Maynard, Danell Taylor, and Louise Davenport. Wanda has followed her heart's desire and has gone to Pennsylvania. She and Jimmy are doing fine with their career in the Navy. Louise tells me that she and Doc are nearing that college degree. They are living at Goobertown and working their way through college between children. I think the last count was about four. She also tells us that her cousin, H. D, , is doing fine as a policeman - the prowl-car kind. His favorite raiding place is lovers' lane, and I hardly think that is fair considering HIS younger days, Howard and Patsy Markum - oops, Price - haven't done so badly, either. They live up North and Howard is a big-time bookkeeper for General Motors. Oh, yes, one more thing that louise writes me is that Sue and Leon, and Betty and Junior are living peacea bly in Brookland after seeing a great part of the world and have started a thriving busi- ness, manufacturing shoe strings. Mr. and Mrs, Billy Joe Nelms reside in St, Louis, and though I do not know what they do for a living they are really doing swell at it. Pat has a mink that greatly resembles the Washington kind. That is all of my old friends that I know about now so I think I will get a manicure at Taylor's Lyttle Shoppee, owned and managed by none other than The Danell Taylor. Chief operator is Jane Willey. She says that she and L, G. have moved into a new apartment, and hangs me a newspaper on a rack in front of my nose thinking to keep me still, Well, what do you know! It says here that Lowell Stevens and Henry R. Payne are about to wind up a successful athletic tour in Europe and are thinking about retir- ing. And on the next page whom do I see but the one and only DONALD Sl-IOPHER who will soon be playing in Madison Square Garden with his amazing collection of trained animals from all over the world. He has employed two big game hunters--H, J. Price and Buddy McGee. Jerry Newson is co-owner of the famous Conrad-Hilton Hotel in New York, now the Newsom-Hilton Hotel. Billy Ray Thompson is staying there tempo- rarily by means of his expense account. You see, he turned out to be a traveling sales- man. And, oh yes, I just retired from my career in voice and Johnny and I are planning a honeymoon in Paris. fAnd if you know what's good for you, you won't ask JOHNNY Wi-lO!J --Bev Most Popular and Best A11-Around Cutest BETTY DAVIES PATSY MARKUM HENRY PAYNE HOWARD PRICE K' ' 1 . we T Most Athletic Most Likely to Succeed PATSY LAYNE BEVERLY NOBLE LOWELL STEVENS JERRY NEWSOM Most Popular Instructors MRS. First of all, a very talkative lass ls Jane Willey who heads the class. Pretty Sue Brown will always rate, We 're glad she is with us to graduate. The Brookland Dodgers are now, uneven, I'm sure they'll call on Lowell Stevens. Beverly Noble, sweet and sincere, Is the class secretary for this year. Next is Wanda Maynard, always gay, With something witty and humorous to say. H. D. Davenport is a quiet lad, When he graduates, he'll be glad. Patsy Layne has a big smile, You can see it for more than a mile. A tall young man is Henry Payne, Basketball playing is his aim. Danell Taylor is a peppy girl, ' She makes with the laughs like Milton Berle. Bill Thompson is an ambitious chap, He hopes to graduate with a cap. H. I. Price, we know by name, Is constantly insisting on a baseball game. Muscular Jerry Newsom, an outstanding athlete, In all kinds of sports, just can't be beat. Patsy Markum, with her sense of humor, has eyes for Howard and that's no rumor. Howard Price, with personality galore, A skater, indeed, on the roller rink floor. Donald's a peppy young lad, I'll sayg Shopher's circus he'll own someday. Betty Davies with her sweet smile, Will go a long way in a very short while. Buddy McGee is a full-of-fun jack, A live wire behind the teacher's back. Here 's one little gal friendly and sweet, Louise Davenport, can't be beat. I guess that's all, just ain't no more, but we want to say before we go, Thanks, Dear Teachers, you've all been grand, the best by far in all this land. Good luck, dear Juniors, here's hoping to you the best of luck to friends so true. We 'll miss you all and the swell times we've had, by leaving now we're all so sad. With very fond memories, we'll say goodbye to our friends and wonderful BROOKLAND HIGH! l l l Wanda Maynard THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF '53 We, the Senior Class of '53 of Brookland High School, the State of Arkansas, being sound in mind and body, do declare this to be our last will and testament: ARTICLE I To the faculty, we wish to express our appreciation for the advice which they have given us and their patience for guiding us through our trials and tribulations.
