Declamation This was the Year we received the NFL NATIONAL AWARD An interest in the field of declam brought out thirty-one students participating in the divisions ot humorous, aratory, dramatic, and poetry. Winners ot the local contest were Helen Sheimo, Robyn Connelly, Scott Leonard, and John Richards. These local winners took part in the Region Contest at Madison where all received an excellent rating. Declom was coached by Mrs. Joan Donaldson. NFL is on organization for those students who have demonstrated their speaking ability by participating in various speech activities. Membership is gained by the accumulation of points. Six ot its members: Kelly Dolan, Beth Groethe, Kathy Gross, Sue Horn, Scott Leonard, and Vicki Thomas attended State Student Congress at which students from the entire state debated the legislation in question and proposed their own legislation. NFL reflects best the entire speech program. James Klassen was its adviser. First Row: Vicki Thomas, Sec.: Kelly Dolan, Treas.g John Richards, V. Pres.: Phil Kohl, Pres. Second Row: J. Kohler, B. Other debaters who participated were Rick Wahlstrom and Kathryn Gross, voted this year's most improved debaters, Vicki Thomas, Sue Horn, Scott Leonard, Beth Groethe, Kelly Dolan and Bob Lytle. Greg Mc- Carty was voted Most Valuable Debater. The squad won honors at nearly every tour- ney they attended. They received first place at Concordia, S.D.S.U., Yonkton, Morningside, and the Divisional Tournaments. Second place was received at the Big Eight Tournament in a four place tie, and third place was achieved at Worthington, NFL and the State Tourna- ments. Individual events also proved to be a strong field for our squad. Sue Horn, John Richards, and Phil Kohl all placed third place at the State tourney in Women's and Men's Extemp and Oratory. Scott Leonard proved to be the only one to merit a trip to the national com- petition to be held this year in Nashville, Tenn. by winning first place in original oratory at the NFL Tournament. The system introduced lost year, of electing two members at large from each class, was carried over to be used again this year. They served as a mediator between students and the faculty. Under the leadership of Student Body President, Gary Steen and through the counciI's diligent efforts, a successful experiment, Grub Day was the highlight of their accomplish- ments. This initiation of the first dress grubby day, which was highly successful, did serve a purpose. A fee of 25c was charged for the privilege of wearing grub clothes, thus accumulating money to be used to furnish the new student lounge. The future nurses went to work to get the feel of being a nurse by helping in the nurse's office. The club's activities consisted of a field trip which took them to Sioux Falls to tour the Sioux Valley Hospital Program and their facilities as well as touring Augustana College. Other meetings included movies and speakers. Miss Kaufman and Mrs. Broadski came from the college to acquaint the girls with the nursing program at S.D.S.U. Miss Ecola discussed speech defects. ln March, Dean Hinsvark from S.D.S.U. presented the program. To finish out the year, the girls attended the State College F.N.A. Club's annual picnic, as guests. Future Homemakers To help each member recognize her abilities and to strive for full development was the theme of the F.H.A. this year. The State project South Dakota Beauty - Our Duty furnished the impetus to the girls to paint the wastebaskets in bright colors to initiate a clean-up of the school. During the National F.H.A. week a red rose vase was placed on the desk of each teacher in the senior high school. One of the programs dealt with Careers in Home Economics at which a panel of professional women explained the various fields. Selling apples after school hours provided money for the chnpter's activities. Fifteen dollars were given to the State Scholarship fund, and twenty dollars to Mrs. Maas of Volga. In the Spring the Club featured Parent's night which included the installation of officers, and a style show of the work of the girls. Nancy Morgan showed slides and told of her stay in France during the previous summer. Kiwanians Firsf Row: Sieve Holm, Phillip Traufman, Allan Parker, Douglas Dahl.
