These people give their time and energy that we may have 'the best well-rounded education. Our high school was chosen this year for a two year project for Superior and Talented Students spon- sored by the North Central Association. Special class- es in chemistry and English IV were scheduled. The graduation requirement in science was changed to read: one year of biology, physics, or chemistry. Expansion was the theme of this yeai-'s work. The addition to Hillcrest School became a reality and land was purchased in the southeast part of the city. Plans are being made for a new senior high school, and newly constructed schools in Yankton and IMinnesota were visited. Schooldistrict reorganization now confronts the Board and meetings have been held in the various districts discussing the problems which arise. The Board gave its approval with commendations of student dress regulations as presented by the Stu- dent Councils. Superintendent School Board L. D. Democracy in action. . . Mel Henrichsen, Student President, presided at all assemblies and council meetings. Mel has been active in athle- tics, excelling in football and track. The Council is made up of an elected member from each ofthe fifteen home rooms. Constructive suggestions are considered care- fully by the student representatives and, when possible, are honored. The Bobcat Day dance and after game dances were sponsored by the Student Council. Rural eighth-graders were escorted about the build- ing on their special visiting day, and the selection of the Northwest Assemblies to be given next year were two of the Council's projects. Discussion of the formation of a Pep Club was tabled. The project of most importance to the students was the adoption of a code of dress which was accepted by the School Board with com- mendations. They marched on Hobo day and at the Bobcat day game presented in formation a picture of the gay Mardi Crras. When winter came the musicians concentrated their ef- forts on the contest. ln Milbank twenty-seven groups received superior, three were given ex- cellent ratings. Of these entrants, twenty were recommended for the evening concert. The spring concc rt featured a variety of music from Handel to Rock and Roll The choice of music and the excellent interpretation made this a fine concert. 'X Soft strains of music may be heard almost ev- ery morning at eight o'clock. Orchestra mem- bers start to work earlier in the day than most people in the school and the extra minutes seem to pay off. This year the orchestra played for the Junior and Senior class plays, the annual Cliristmas program, and the Baccalaureate ser- vice. Early in May they observed National Music week with a concert. Both band and orchestra received superior ratings in the regional contest this year. 1959 marked the first contest in three years as previously a region festival was held. After strenuous rehearsals, a grand concert was given under the direction of Mr. Sateran, visit- ing director. L'Allegro, a select group of twenty four girls, won a superior rating in the Region III Contest. Criticism included high praise. L'- Allegro sang over the radio, and senior mem- bers, at other special functions. The Sadie Hawkins, an annual girl-ask-boy dance, was sponsored by the club. A Basketball Again this year the 58-59 Bobcats were plagued with the lack of height. At this time with most teams having the exceptionl big man , scoring and rebounding were especially hard for the short- er cats. Despite their lack of height their deter- mination and effective press made them one of the most talked about and underrated squads in the E. S.D. A great blow to the squad carne when Bob Shelden was incapacitated for two months. Over- coming these great deficits the cats ended the season with a won 10 lost 9 seasonal record. Highlight of the season was the naming of Bob Shelden and Skip Webster to all-state squads. Intramurals Intramural is for those boys who have not played on any other basketball team during the year. Divided into six teams, they played each other twice for the league charnpionship. After the league play was over a single elimination tournament was held, Jennings' Giants captured the league title while Walta's Warhorses clairned the tourna- ment crown. The intramural captains were: Lynn Riedesel, Greg Walta, John Wolter, Don Robson, Rich Jen- nings and .Tim Sterud. 8 40 48 50 50 45 34 70 41 SEASON RECORD They We Sisseton 45 49 Sioux Falls 46 30 Yankton 37 58 Watertown 52 46 Aberdeen 66 49 Huron 39 49 Mitchell 55 45 Madison 57 27 Flandreau 67 Section ll Tournament Flandreau 49 Madison 63 They 32 66 39 70 47 53 52 46 50 55 47 CA A K gm. f ir eo BBA KSA BCA S217 1 NECA 3 1 ,s F , BBC! 53' X1 fl fuk 4 x W 1 F 5 1 First row: Dick Hegg, Jim Opdahl, Bob Webbenhurst, Henry Nelson, Lynn Rasmussen, Frank Messner, Orv Smidt. Track Records Shattered The BHS track team this year was one of the best teams that we have had. Many long standing records were shattered and the team as a whole was ranked third in the state Class A. The season opened with the Madison Invitational meet closely followed by the Watertown Invita- tional and the Corn Palace Relays in which the meet record for the shot put was broken by Mel Henrichsen. The next week, with a split squad, the track- sters showed up well at both Aberdeen and Mil- bank. Mel Henrichsen took first place in both the shot and the discus. Also the old records were broken by Bobcat contenders. Kirk Seifert ran the 100 yard dash in 10. 6 sec. Skip Webster won the 220 yard dash in 25 seconds, and Larry Schultz vaulted ll feet 6 inches in the pole vault. Henrichsen continued breaking records as the team traveled to the Howard Wood Relays. He bettered his own record in the shot with a toss of 52 feet 1X2 inch. In the discus he also broke the school record with a throw of 147 feet 8 112 in. Brookings placed in three other categories with Stan Johnson taking second in the 100 yard dash, the 440 yard relay tearn placed third, the 880 placed fourth. This team pictured in number 2 consists of Stan Johnson, Dick Fergen, Mike Braley, and Bob Shelden. This team, the 440 relay team, also placed fourth in the 880 yard relay. The next week, at the Watertown meet, Larry Schultz vaulted 12 feet 3 in. to break the old pole vault record of ll feet 8 in. In the same meet Dick Fergen tied the high hurdle mark of 15. 9 sec. In the state track meet, Mel Henrichsen took second in the shot and third in the discus. Stan Johnson placed third in the 100 and fifth in the 220 yard dash. Larry Schultz placed second in the pole vault and the 880 yard relay team took fourth. Then came the final meet of the season, the Conference meet. The boys who qualified to enter the Conference Meet are as follows: Mel Henrich- sen, Stan Johnson, Bob Shelden, Dick Fergen, Larry Schultz, Frank Knutson, Tim Murphy, and Skip Webster. The team took fourth and three of the individual events were won by Brookings. Lar- ry Schultz defeated Huron's Busch to take first in the pole vault while Mel held down the weight divi- sion by placing first in both the discus and shot. All in all it was an excellent season. ,J 357 -'riff' The golf and tennis teams competed in a dual practice meet in Watertown before the State High Tournarnent. Her snobbish sister was very different. She thought only of society's opinion, and was very much spoiled by her neurotic mother. This brought about many conflicts and the main one was romance! The whole family was very unhappy for awhile but with the help of Pat's father, the girls solved everything for a happy ending. Time C For Ginger Action in this play began when Ginger, a full-fledged tomboy joined the football team and upset the entire family. Ginger had the sup- port of her father in this ac- tion because he thought any- one should be able to do what they wanted. This made everyone in the town laugh at him and he almost lost his job. High point in the play was a hilarious description of the game Ginger won , given by her father. After this, Ginger gives up football and faces reality. They cheered their teams, had their parties, pub- lished a paper, put on plays, and even tried to study. !?SN 4 5 l A123351 , 4-,ali- E U ,r , X4 ll , lox ll. li X ,fy XB Q Yr S 1 e xxx X N X! j V, A .if ,Q i I - Floyd A. Johnson ' Junior High Principal iii -1 Junior High School brings with it many new experiences-different classes, more social life, and added responsibilities. It is the preparation for the coming high school years. There is a new freedom which creates individual responsibility. Along with the regular academic courses, such as English, history, geography, mathematics, and science, there are new added extra-curri- cular activities. Cheerleaders who were chosen to lead the students at the Wildcats' basketball games were Lois Jerde, Mary Kay Mitchell, DeMaras Elston, Patsy Behrend, and Bonnie Borstad. QPic- tured on next pagel. Another activity for those who like to turnble is the Mat Kittens. The girls on this team were Susan Hvistendahl, Beth Wallace, Randi Holden, Kay Seyller, Merrill Mus son, Sharilyn Young- er, Kathy Bartling, Linda Revell, Mary Foreman, Paula Arndt, Martha Giddings, and Nancy Larson. fPictured on next pagel. Throughout the yearthere were parties given for each grade and some for the combined grades which provided fun for all. It was here that the individuals put their talents to use in the floor- shows. Speech classes presented plays for their parents as a climax to the speech course. And at Christmas time the Junior High Student Council purchased and decorated a Christmas tree to place in the hall for all to see. All this is Junior High School.
