Ja 'ce Ullman, Lorna Mat- son Tluw We See-Zogicallq, Yllogically or Utlnef-wiAe . . . I With words as weapons, the debate team opened the debate season in January at the Watertown Speech fiesta. Although no awards were given at the Vermillion Tournament, three debaters were judged outstanding in discussion and debate. At Gustavus Adolphus, one refuter received a medal for being outstanding. Next was the Trl-State Tournament at Madison where the team tied for the experienced trophy, won the inexperienced f'f0Ph2' BS well BS the sweepstakes trophy, and three debaters were awarded medals for being outstanding. The Big fight Tournament saw the team place second. Sioux Falls was the site of the Midwest Meet with Brookings winning third place. Two members were awarded medals for being second in speaking and discussion. Brookings placed third at the National Forensic League Tournament at Mitchellg and after surviving undefeated in the region, the team wound up third in the State Debate Tournament at Huron in April. This tournament completed the debate season as well as the entire speech season for the year. During the season, the experienced affirmative team was composed of Lorna Matson and Myron Linder while the negative team included Janice Ullman and Wayne Severson. The inexperienced affirmative team con- sisted of Mary Ann De Long and Joan Beckman, and the negative team of Dick Peddicord and Le Roy Ness. Mrs. Joseph Paulson, in her first year at Brookings High School, guided the debate team through the season.
