The four local contest winners, Lenore Johnston, Janice Ullman, Lois Linder, and Myron Linder, proceeded to the regional contest, where they each received an excellent rating. The Brookings chapter of the National Forensic League, commonly known as just the NFL, included thirteen members during the past year. Officers were: Myron Linder, presidentg Wayne Severson, vice-presidentg Ruth Mackintosh, secretary and treasurerg and Janice Ullman, social chairman. A dozen NFL degrees were awarded the members of the local chapter during the year with two members attaining the Degree of Excellence, and one received the Degree of Distinction. 'Uur MIAA KrooleA After arriving in the Junior High Auditorium on the evening of March 30, we soon felt at homeg for when the curtain arose on Our Miss Brooks, we found the stage set as that ever familiar sight - the schoolroom. Miss Brooks, played by Janice Ullman, was presented as a typical schoolteacher whose trouble started when the production of the school play was taken from Mary Ann DeLong as Miss Audubon and given to her. More difficulties arose quickly as the coach, Hugo Longacre, played by Larry Frie, accused Miss Brooks of under- mining the basketball team by using basketball players in the play and using the gym for play practices. Don Woolworth as Mr. Wadsworth, the principal, had the exhausting job of coordinating Miss Brooks' activities to the ideas of Mrs. Allen, a domineering member of the school board, acted by Joan Beckman. Ardis Jackson as Miss Finch, the librarian, tried to be helpful, but unfortunately she seemed to have a faculty for saying the wrong thing. More troubles were added by the group of students whom Miss Brooks had in the cast. Despite their lack of cooperation and other difficulties, the students finally were ready to present their play as we saw the curtain close on Our Miss Brooks. The cast was coached by Miss Lavonne Magnuson, who was assisted by student director Joan Haddow. Cue 61116 'piecu of Qgli t- C Piecea of fight Have you ever been in a play, or on a production staff? By singing and play- ing games in Spanish we get a better understanding of their ideas and language. At our Christmas meeting we portray the Spanish Yuletide customs. While the many friends of Brookings High School scramble for candy and peanuts from the pinata at the annual Spanish dance, they feel a little of the easygoing Spanish gaiety. Taking the Wheel Made up of leaders in school activities, the Student Council gives opportunity for the students to have a voice in the government of the school. Acting on democratic principles, it endeavors to solve the problems which confront the school in a way which is acceptable to the students. Elected at the beginning of a school year by selecting a capable representative from each homeroom, this group promotes recreation and school work. This organization gives final approval to plans submitted by organizations or individuals. The Council, composed of sixteen representatives, meets when necessary to act upon the suggestions offered by the students. Each spring an election is held to elect a new student body presi- dent. Settling down to work, speedball and recreational games were the first sports of the new year. Although cold weather forced the canceling of our all- star game in speedball, the tournaments in recreational games sailed on to completion. Going indoors, we took up the most popular game on the calendar - basketball. We finished the season with 20 of the girls playing a demonstration game before the student body. Next came the groans, aching backs, and sore muscles, as we turned somersaults, cartwheels, somersaults, chest-rolls, and somersaults. Besides numerous appearances at both high school and college games, the advanced tumbling team performed at Madison High School. Leaving tumbling, we sailed on to the sport of volleyball. When spring came we took to the great outdoors. Straining muscles in track and trying to hit elusive balls in soft- ball, we came to the end of another year. But playing around was not the only thing. We sold candy at all the football and basketball games and with money from this we sponsored the Gentless Jive and our annual GAA Banquet. Singe Skilled in 14 Cappel a Music filled the air as the baton of Bill Smith directed the mixed chorus, L'Allegro, and boys' chorus, adding to the musical appreciation of those participating. The first part of the year was spent working out songs for the annual Christmas program. The chorus provided the background music, while the Christmas story was presented by live shadow box figures shown below. The boys' chorus and L' Allegro added their well-sung bits to provide a wide variety of music. Several small groups such as .Le boys' octette and girls' octette provided entertainment for many social functions, as well as school activities. The musical mood prevailed as the mixed chorus, L' Allegro, and boys' chorus received superior ratings at the spring contest. The rendition of many well-chosen numbers brought praise and honor to the vocal department when they sang at the annual spring concert. The mixed chorus also presented a variety of numbers at commencement exercises. Included in these was a song written by Bill Smith. Washington stalled out the game with a score of 20-l2. Plagued by injuries to key men and ill weather the Cats found it difficult to get into the winning column again on their trip to Mitchell. Both teams did their scoring in the first half and a deluge kept the Bobcats from catching up with the early-tallying Kernels. After beating off a late rally by the determined Felines the boys from the Corn Palace City went on to win l9-l3. It was a different story the following Friday when the luckless Aberdeen Eagles paid a visit to the lair of the improved Bobcats. In a game lengthened by the lights being out for an hour and a half the patient fans saw the Cats show the Eagles that they were to be reckoned with in the conference. A sterling defense was the answer to the Bobcats prayers in winning over the Eagles for the first time in ten years by the score of l2-0. Watertown was the next victim of the fighting Felines. In a game ot flaring tempers and vicious defense on both sides, the Cats proved to be the better team by stopping their opponents cold and reaching the Promised Land for twenty points more than their foes, and triumphed 20-0. Brookings enjoyed one of the most successful Bobcat Days in history, at the expense of the Yankton Bucks. The Cats started their scoring spree the first play of the game and were never stopped until the final whistle blew. A new scoring record had been set, and the Bucks had been mutilated by the fantastic score of 61-0. Nothing could stop the ferocious Felines now, as Huron felt the bite of the power-laden Cats. The line tore through the Tigers' backfield and stopped their running attack completely, while the backfield ran and passed like professionals, to rack up another huge total of counters. Huron found themselves in the last three minutes to save 'face a trifle. The score was Zl-6. The end of a superlative season came with a happy note on Bobcat field, with the Bulldogs of Madison the last but not least of the Cats' long line of opponents. Scoring early and frequently, the black Felines over- powered Madison completely with a victory of 4l-0. one 1 ui Top Row Larry Frue Bob Revell Second Row George VanL:1nungt-uam Duck Pedducord Ron Eruckson Jack Nutz Roger Kerns Evers LeFevre Thurd Row Rod Elgue Dan LeLaCheur Stan Rushou Don Norquust Gordon Lanarn Loren Engel Sandy Rymerson FOI-Jfih Row Lee RoyTelkamp Don Rykhus Ray Telkamp Duane Rykhus Duck Dokken Fufth Row Dave Chrustenseru Nug Johnson lack Nutz and Duck Dokken stop a play up the muddle George VanLanungham us stopped by an unknown Yank ton Iuneman Larry Frue wuth Dan LeLaCheur stop an end run durung tue Bobcat Buck massacre 4. , , r ' ill 1 J ,4 - , f , K , I u . The Bobcats then literally clawed their way to the state tournament. ln the regionals the Cats were still showing the style of play which won them the conference crown. They beat both Aberdeen and Flandreau lndians. Next the Cats went into the State Tournament labeled a favorite. After setting a new tournament scoring record by downing the Winner five by 72 to 39, the Bobcats ceased pulling those last minute victories out of the fire for just one game and were downed by a hot shooting Sturgis Scooper five by 37 to 35. Sturgis kept right on rolling the next night and won the State Championship. The Bobcats perked up their knocked down ears the next night and came back to beat the Watertown Arrows by a score of 59 to 57 to win third place in the Class A Tournament. The leading scorer for the entire season was Byron Luke, who was placed on the all state team. Honoring the Cats and their fine season, the Junior Chamber of Commerce held their annual recognition banquet on March I2 at the Hotel Sawnee. Master of ceremonies for the evening was Herbert Cheever. Lefty Johnson presented the letter awards and announced that gold basketballs had been ordered for the team. Through the generosity of several Brookings citizens, the ESD Conference Co-Champions were given the opportunity to witness the NCAA finals in Minneapolis. Carol Lane Fred lnot shown at leftl Glenn Sykes As the curtain rises on the senior class production, Cheaper by the Dozen, the story of the Gilbreths and their family of twelve children methodically unfolds. Dad Gilbreth was a determined man with many immovable ideas concerning the saving of time. The older girls, Anne, Ernestine, Martha and Lillian, found his determination to have them graduate from high school quickly, especially un- pleasant: it left no time for boys and popularity they desired. The boys found father's ideas hard to bear when he divided the work among them and ran the household on a factory basis. The play was directed by Miss Mag- nuson, assisted by Carol Lane and Shir- ley Blumke. ,.
