Under the able guidance at Miss Leotta Hampton, twenty-tive students studied humorous, aratory, dramatics, and poetry. Four survived the local and went on to re- ceive high ratings at the state meet. They have made more records and won more tournaments than any other group of speakers in one year. To start out, the novice debaters walked off with the tournament trophy at the Watertown Speech Fiesta. Not so long after that the novices won the younger set's trophy at the Madison Tri-State tourney. Not to be outdone by their understudies, the experienced group gained some valuable practice and tech- nique at the Gustavus Adolphus meetg and then they went on to capture the ESD. tourney at Huron. After these warm-ups the squad went on to win both sweepstakes and debate at the Mid-West tourney in Sioux Falls. Next on the list was second place at the South Dakota District meet ot NFL held in Mitchell. Then, as a final wind-up tor the season, the refuters copped the state championship held at Brookings. Two of the champions, Wayne Johnson and Howard Sauer, were chosen by the coach, Miss Lucille Kaul, to debate in the National N.F.L. tourney at Kenosha, Wisconsin.
