Gary Macklin was the outstanding runner at state by plac- ing 22nd in a field of 147. The team brought in a 7-O win record in dual matches and placed Hfth at the Waukesha Hill and Dale. Paul Westcott was elected captain and Lee Assenheimer the most val- uable member of the team. Al Gomber and Bruce Ellwanger scored a touchdown apiece with Bruce Ellwanger intercepting two passes and Jim Schoebeck one. The Lancers behind their excellent defense and fine team play were able To make two setup drives for touchdowns only to fumble the ball. They held the Pirates back once, but late in the fourth quarter Port 80 Lancers slide by Oak Creek, 28-21. Bruce Ellwanger was responsible for three touch- downs, one extra point, and the tirst field goal to be made in the Bravelancl Conference. Two of his touch- downs were on 90 and 79 yard runs. Bill Niemann in- tercepted a pass and Al Gornber scored a touchdown. Rivals fall as Brookfield knocks Nicolet, 'l4-0. lt was a Tight game until the fourth quarter when Bruce Ellwanger broke away on a 7O yard run for a touchdown with Bill Niemann making the conversion. Bob Morris ran 38 yards for a Touchdown with Bruce Ellwanger kicking forthe extra point. Mike Komar and Bill Niemann intercepted passes. Brookfield defeats Muskego, 40-7. Bill Niemann shot away for three touchdowns, one on a 28 yard pass play from Jim Schoebeck. Bruce Ell- wanger counted for two more. In the fourth quarter Bob Morris ran 33 yards Tor the sixth touchdown. Bruce Ellwanger made four conversions. John Otien received a pass from Al Gomber on a pass play to set up a touchdown play. Captain Pete Jacobsen was All-Conference and All- Area center, while Nels Christopherson was All-Conter- ence and All-Area guard. Most Valuable Player Bruce Ellwanger made All-Conference, All-Area back along with Mike Komar, All-Area back. Opponents were able to score an average of 60.6 points a game. The top two Lancers accounting for high scoring were All-confer- ence Jim Schoebeck and Mike Komar. Co-captain Schoe- beck was third in the conference with a 18.1 game av- erage, Most Valuable Player Mike Komar was sixth with 16.4. Co-captain Bill Neimann added to the Lan- cer's scoring with an 11 point average per game. Schoe- beck made 80 of his points in free throws out of 110 shots to give him the highest percentage on the team, .727. Fans will remember the first Granville game when in the last seconds Granville was able to score a 63-62 win. The second Granville game proved to be a rout as Coach Blomberg's boys pulled away in the second quarter with a record 32 point surge, winning 94-69. This score of 94 points was the highest score in the Braveland Conference this season. A new team re- cord of 40 fields goals was set in this game. At Hartford the team defeated the opposition, 102- 70, the highest score in Lancer history. Mike Komar broke his own team record of 30 points to score 35 points in one game. A hard week-end of basketball faced the team as they were slated to play rivals Port Washington and Wauwatosa. They topped Port, 66-57 by fine defensive play. The next night was nip and tuck with Tosa until the last seven seconds when Mike Komar made a 12 foot iump shot to break a 58-58 tie and win the game. After tying for third place in the Braveland Confer- ence with Granville, the 1959-60 Lancer Basketball team went on to win consolation championship in the W.l.A.A. Tournament at Menomonee Falls. After losing to Arrowhead in the tourney the boys came back splen- didly to take Tosa 61-57. Five seniors started and took the lead. After four minutes they were relieved by five underclassmen. The entire team played inspired ball as they repeatedly kept up with Wauwatosa. ln the last few seconds they used the Raider's mistakes to go on to win. The highlight of the season was the conference meet on May 20 with Brookfield turning in a total of 417. The Lancer track team won the conference championship over second place Port Wash- ington by the score of 7OV2 to Port s 46V2. Menomonee Falls was third with a 44 and Nicolet fourth with a 42. Team scoring gives the first place winner in each event five points, second place four, and so on. John Otien and Mike McCabe took tirst and second places in both high and low hurdles in the conference meet. These boys and un- derclassmen Leighton Mangels and Steve Stod- dard have moved to the varsity in T960 to re- place the 1959 season's senior hurdler Paul Netzow, who was third in the conference. Mike Golner, after placing first at confer- ence in the 440 yard dash, tied for second in pole vault with Shores of Port Washington. The 1960 season brought a young group of vaulters with Mike Sueflohn, Leighton Man- gels, Mike Golner, and Dick Kleine. Bill Neibuhr continued improvement throughout the season to become an excep- tional sprinter climaxing the season with a first place win in the 220 yard dash at the conference meet at Nicolet. 1959-TR CK S AS .. Pete Jacobson's hard work took him to second place in the shot put last spring, Coach Coley expects him to go great guns in both shot put and discus during his senior year. The Lancers had three of the best dis- cus men in the conference during the '59 sea- son with Dave Fraser Cschool record holderl, Butch Doman, and Pete Jacobsen. The squad had four of the best broad iumpers in the conference with Bill Welty, Jim Kavemeier, Rick Crandall, and Gary Hesse. Graduates Welty and Kavemeier placed first and third, respectively, in the conference meet at Nicolet last spring. Dick Gryphan went all the way to third in the state in the high iump going over six feet. Jim Kavemeier who usually took sec- ond place, as he did in the conference meet, on occasion was able to beat Gryphan. A team of Bill Welty, Rick Crandall, Jim Kavemeier, and Mike Golner placed first in the conference meet in the 880 yard relay. Brookfield won the eight-team Brookfield invitational, which is made up of teams the Lancers' age or newer, with 76 points, second place Monona Grove scored 45. The Hartford Relays proved to be a heartbreaker as the Lancers took second to Sheboygan Central by QQV2 points in a field of fifteen teams. Minutemen in Action ,.
