TO THE STUDENTS OF BROOK SCHOOL: This school year of 1960-1961 marks another year in your educational advancement. Time has a way of advancing all of us toward maturity. Your growth is measured by the attainment of knowledge and understanding you have garnered during each school year. One begins to live when he strives to overcome his weaknesses and has a burning desire for self improvement. Education has meaning only when its end result is an improved individual. It is hoped that during your pro- gress through and after your graduation from the local school, you will bring credit to your school and community. 7 Norman Tanksley Superintendent of School BOARD OF EDUCATION Wayne Toben, Harley Clark, Roy Sell, Bill Rathbun, Lowell Putt (Howard Masters has replaced Harley Clark) Violet Crudden 5 Mr. Charles A. Pixie, vou know we have seen many, many seniors gradu- ate from this school, but the class wrnch stands out most vividly in my mind is the class of 1961, said Dixie. I wonder what they're dowing now! Remember that tall, handsome blond who was president of that superior senior class. That was John Hess and he is still president, but of Indiana University. Yeah, remember his little vice-president, that is, Sandy Akers? After graduation from I. U., she became a teacher at a large school in southern Indiana; and later married the superintendent of that school. Did you see the paper yesterday, Dix? Wayne Strole's picture was on the front page. He is the scientist who super- vised the rocketship that sent the first man to Mars. It also stated that the success of the flight was due to Rocky Nelson, who is now an aviation specialist for the government. When I turned to the sports page, I saw that Bob Johnson hit the home run that won the pennant for the Milwaukee Braves. Another '61 graduate was in the news. Dr. James Thompson spoke to the National Medical Convention about his new vaccine for St. Vita's Dance.” I got a letter from my cousin Claude who lives in Cali- fornia. He tells me Diana Reynolds lives out there with her husband and four children. He also says that Sherry Sainte is now singing in the famous night club, the Hungry I. Kirby Bartlett is often among the marines who hang around the Hungry I on leave. He decided to make a career of the Marines. You know, Dix, a lot of the other alumni live in places even more exotic than California. Jim Johnston is in the sugar refining business in South America. Nancy Sell is head nurse in a hospital in the South Pacific, Tom Kindell is a famous lawyer in England, and Bill Lane is a detective for Scottland Yard. Rosie Whaley and Larry Antcliff are mar- ried and now live on the French Riviera where Larry has the home office for his chain of hot dog stands. I also hear that Jo Putt lives in fabulous Hong Kong where she writes the society page for a New York newspaper; and her good friends Marcia Ferguson owns and operates a beauty salon on the most fashionable street in Paris. Tom Clark now makes his residence in the Congo where he is teaching the natives to read and write. 76 'That reminds me, remember when I took that cruise through the Pacific? The captain of the yacht I chartered was Dave Patterson. On board I saw Joyce Antcliff and Becky Wikle with husbands on their second honeymoon to Hawaii. And when I was touring Hawaii, I saw Jim Burley who has perfected the process of mass-producing grass skirts. I was surprised to run onto Anita Williams who is now busily instructing tourists in the art of the hula dance. Chuck Thompson, now a famous mining engineer, spends his vaca- tions on many of Hawaii's beaches digging clams. They certainly have gone a long way. Back here in the States I often run across Roy Kindig and Ardis Whaley, who are now Mr. and Mrs., working on their farm near Brook. A few acres away from the Kindig's lives Bob Taylor on the largest farm in Indiana. All day he works in the fields, but at night he sheds his farmer clothes and takes his place as the most eligible bachelor in three counties. Say, Pix, did you hear about Mike Gravesen and Jim Hermanson? They own and operate the only diamond mine in the United States. I had heard that, but you won't believe this. Ruth Snod- grass and her husband, Bob Bastian, operate an all-night diaper service for the Marine base where he is stationed. After school yesterday I found a magazine on the floor and in it was an article about Chuck Martin. He has built a electronic computor which can figure out complicated prob- lems that before took months. Oh, these kids have really made the news, Dix. I just heard the other day that Bob White, the world famous me- chanic, is now working on spaceships for the government. I also heard that Rosie Vaughan is County Health Nurse for Newton County. The only senior we haven't mentioned is Sandy Whaley. She is the only woman astronaut and has just returned from Venice. Well, Pixie, all this reminising has made me hungry. Let's go down to the kitchen to see if we can find some cheese. 77 Good-by Brook High School” And so our book is completed. The moments that were lived are now to be remembered. If while you look through this book several years from now, fond memories appear, our task has been accomplished. 78
