,bio I The urge In rn'l1ie1'e ffriyfu stami- ' I , urfl qrzielzly re-jornn-11 the .wluriy e Q lzuliils of nmsf uf us. RL. ne of the darkest. most irregularly shaped nooks of Sl'tl'Ill'f' proudly frames the dignified mien of .4ristu. Although no one has been able to find this corner without being given a map and extensive directions. the .-lrislu Ulliee has become the habitat ull seven singular personages- six hard-boiled. close-lipped ollicers. and their kindly faculty adviser. Seniors who have received the dire summons for an interview have stumbled up a tlight of steps into an atmosphere of perpetual. but highly intellectual excitement. While Richie Katz and Margery Hauser. the distinguished Assistant Leaders. are joyously constructing gliders out of old applications. and hurling' them at each other. and Ruth Lewin. pen in hand. is as ever eating Ronny Schreiber's lunch, ltugee llier- man and Phil Blume question the quaking interviewees: How long have you played Villeybell Intermurrels'f Chess Team and Space Patrol Club for four years. hm? Exactly what do you do in the Animals' Club? and with an awful finality. You spell squad. skwod? I donit think you belong in .4ris1u. ' Meanwhile Mr. lfllenoff chucklingly informs a notorious criminal with twenty- three pink cards that Wie do have tremendously high standards, you know.. . An unintelligible red squiggle in a maze of boxes determines the life or death of an application. Paper clips. airplanes. red pencil stubs. and apples slip. lly. and roll about in the final furor to process the last few applications. But when the dust settles again upon the .ffrisla Ullice. when the last application is scanned. and when the final new member is notified and the four candles are solemnly alight. we can feel the significance of flrisla. its meaning during our high school lives. From the dimly distant days when we entered Science. we saw' Jristu as a goal. a special niche that we wanted to attain. We hastened to join squads. embellish com- mittees. and even play in Int:-rmurrels . We studied and crammed to keep our average up. At the end of four grueling years of such concentrated effort we were rewarded with a tiny green-and-gold pin. a solemn induction ceremony. and repeated exhortations to do better. Strangely. though. those werenit the only rewards. We experienced the thrill of thinking creatively and perceptively. the glow from having done a job ably on a committee. and the friend- ships with teachers and classmates that grew from these. .lrislu is. of course. not just an end in it- self. nor is it only a beginning. It is a recog- nition of that which we have accomplished. but it is not nearly so important as the ac- complishments themselves. .flrisla membership marked both a culmination and a commence- ment of our achievements: the anticipation of it provided the incentive for discovering and enlarging our capabilitiesg our remembrance of it will spur us on to the best.
