They have been stirring years. We laidithe foundation while the war clouds were gathering. We erected the structure as the storm of battle broke over the world. We are in full opera- tion at exactly the moment when the need is great for men of science, men of skill. men attuned to the ways of democracy. The call to service which comes to your generation is a privilege enjoyed by many in the past: but few have had so vital a duty to perform. Never before has the torch of liberty been so close to total extinction: never before has victory held such hope for the common man. What you do in the next few years will be historic: your efforts will usher in a new era. Wihile your plans for a fuller education may be interrupted or modified. you will have the joy of participating in an epoch making exent. The experience will enrich your lives. despite suffering and sacriiice. You will return to us with renewed faith in science and democracy. with irresistible determination to build a world in which despotism and prejudice can find no place. The faculty wishes you good fortune and Godspeed. You are taking part of us with you into battle. Our hopes. our ideas and our ideals are in your hands and will be fighting for the cause.
