Pharmacy Dispenses Drugs The dispensing of drugs, pharmacy supplies, and information is an important function of the pharmacy department. Approximately 1, 000 prescriptions for patients come to the department each day and these are dispensed from a store of some 3, O00 different drug items. Many telephone calls for informa- tion about these and other drugs are re- ceived. The Harrison Narcotic Act and the Dangerous Drug Act are laws which control the dispensing and administration of some of these drugs and each dose that is dis- pensed by the pharmacy department and administered to patients by nurses must be accounted for at the time of administration and at the change of each shift. Narcotic check in the pharmacy. :ffl 5 , gn' Mr. Johnson, Department Head, receives phone order. .rl What did you want?

Meet . . Out Patient Department - H-',l1 sl ll !! ',f i:s Mrs. Lord explains chart to students. A student nurse says, With much inner and outer bewilderment and anticipation I began my experi- ence in the Out Patient Department. Every six weeks a new group of senior students assembles in the conference room in the Out Patient Department. They are dressed in their blue public health uniforms and are ready for their orientation conference. Each student learns that she will spend one week of this assignment in the Emergency Room, two weeks will be spent in community services, and three weeks in the Out Patient Clinics: Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, Emergency Room Follow Up, Obstetrical, Orthope- dic, Pediatric, Rheumatic Fever, Surgical, and Well Child Clinic. This affiliation is under the di- rection and supervision of Mrs. Edna Lord and the department heads of the allied services. In the clinical area of her experience the student nurse will also develop a better understanding and appreci- ation of the program conducted by the Director of Medical Education. The student will spend some time with the Edison Nursery School, the Harold Upjohn School for Spe- cial Education, the Industrial Health Division of the Upjohn Portage Plant, the Juvenile Court, Kala- mazoo County Health Department, and the Visiting Nurse Association, This experience will help the student to understand professional responsibilities to the health and social needs of the community, to develop an awareness of some of the factors involved in preventive medi- cine, public health, rehabilitation, and the needs of the non-hospitalized patient. This will also give her an opportunity to observe some of the contribu- tions of physicians, nurses, and other professional people in allied fields. Six weeks later the same student nurse says, Now with a feeling of sadness and much new knowledge I end my experience, feeling within myself a wiser person from the experience. I think I learned many things from the Out Patient Department, but one thing especially--that all people must be treated as people--as individuals, with feelings and needs. I knew this before, but by serving in the clinics and going out into the community this seemed to be ex- pressed more and more.
