Approximately 1, 000 prescriptions for patients come to the department each day and these are dispensed from a store of some 3, O00 different drug items. Many telephone calls for informa- tion about these and other drugs are re- ceived. The Harrison Narcotic Act and the Dangerous Drug Act are laws which control the dispensing and administration of some of these drugs and each dose that is dis- pensed by the pharmacy department and administered to patients by nurses must be accounted for at the time of administration and at the change of each shift. A student nurse says, With much inner and outer bewilderment and anticipation I began my experi- ence in the Out Patient Department. Every six weeks a new group of senior students assembles in the conference room in the Out Patient Department. They are dressed in their blue public health uniforms and are ready for their orientation conference. Each student learns that she will spend one week of this assignment in the Emergency Room, two weeks will be spent in community services, and three weeks in the Out Patient Clinics: Amputee, Cerebral Palsy, Emergency Room Follow Up, Obstetrical, Orthope- dic, Pediatric, Rheumatic Fever, Surgical, and Well Child Clinic. This affiliation is under the di- rection and supervision of Mrs. Edna Lord and the department heads of the allied services. In the clinical area of her experience the student nurse will also develop a better understanding and appreci- ation of the program conducted by the Director of Medical Education. The student will spend some time with the Edison Nursery School, the Harold Upjohn School for Spe- cial Education, the Industrial Health Division of the Upjohn Portage Plant, the Juvenile Court, Kala- mazoo County Health Department, and the Visiting Nurse Association, This experience will help the student to understand professional responsibilities to the health and social needs of the community, to develop an awareness of some of the factors involved in preventive medi- cine, public health, rehabilitation, and the needs of the non-hospitalized patient. This will also give her an opportunity to observe some of the contribu- tions of physicians, nurses, and other professional people in allied fields. Six weeks later the same student nurse says, Now with a feeling of sadness and much new knowledge I end my experience, feeling within myself a wiser person from the experience. I think I learned many things from the Out Patient Department, but one thing especially--that all people must be treated as people--as individuals, with feelings and needs. I knew this before, but by serving in the clinics and going out into the community this seemed to be ex- pressed more and more. km 74-1. sill ef? v' , - Q 14' w 5 'TQ' ' ' 8 , 'Q A 3Qi -uw-4' ' '! 3 N ' R , r g Q WE F ,lf W , , ' 9 I 1 - U I - U , - . The library offers to its readers the opportunity for quiet research and study in the Doctor's Reading Room and in the Nurses' Reading Room, Meetings and small classes are held in the conference rooms. The collection of nearly 5000 books, over 185 jour- nal titles, and more than 1000 bound journals con- tinues to grow to meet the increasing needs of our institution. The staff of the library is here to help many make effective use of the many library re- sources. The audiorvisual equipment and aids program cen- tralized through the library, was in its prenatal stag last year, but arrived as a bouncing baby this past year and is growing at a rapid pace. : -- it me sn .. 8 .. , ,mf ,-,T . Print Shop Carries Heavy Load Carl Belson, Manager, Eli Troyer at work on rush job. In the past 6 months the Bronson Hospital Print Shop has used 4 112 tons of paper. If this 950, 000 sheets of 8 112 X ll inch paper were laid end to end they would cover an area 8 112 inches wide and 167 miles long. As impressive as these figures are they do not adequately tell the story, as much of the paper is printed on both sides and there are postal cards and many other items which are not included in the above. The print shop is responsible for over 700 forms used in the hospital, plus the Catalyst fthe employee publicationj, the Auxiliary News Letter, The Alumni News Letter, vari ous financial statements and many administration letters, student instruction books, all of the procedure booklets used in the hospital, many of which contain upwards to 100 pages. Also printed in the shop are many special items such as tickets and programs for varied activities of the students, auxiliary and other groups associated with the hos- pital . Because of the increasing volume of work and the increasing sophistication of the print- ing, the print shop recently acquired additional equipment and now makes the nega- tives and plates necessary to printing. This new equipment greatly increases the pro- duction of the print shop making it possible to go from an original copy to printing in a matter of minutes. The continuing aim of the Bronson Print Shop is producing qual- ity printing in a minimum of time at the least possible cost to the hospital. fungi Sojiball T eam Won, W as 1963 Champlonshrp Softball Team The Bronson Whrte Caps won the Federal League Softball Champronshrp for the thrrd year Ln a row on August 5 1963 dowmng Kalamazoo Statronery 4 1 The season opened May 15 wtth an 11 '7 wm over Rrchland The Whtte Caps posted erght stratght wms and remarned the only unbeaten team tn Kalama zoo unttl July 24 when Durametallrc upset the team 6 5 The Whrte Caps played over 30 games losmg only seven Much of the credrt must go to the loyal fans the employees and student nurses for therr support of the team The team tn actron. -X 2 H .
