Scholarship Benefit Basketball Game, the teachers were forced to take a back seat. From the very beginning the students had control of the game with a 15 to 4 lead, but the mentors’ spirits were unwilling to be broken and by halftime, the scholars had a sizable lead. In the second half the teachers appeared to be overwhelmed, but even then they never once considered throwing in the towel. It was a good game, ending in a student triumph, 49 to 40. 106 STUDENT-FACULTY GAME 108 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES 109 Miss Patricia Chisholm, director “Don’t Count Your Chickens Until They Cry Wolf” Seniors Reign! The Vikes were coached by Joe Fisher, the second consecutive first year coach. Assisting Fisher were Maurice Skinner and Ken Miller. The cocaptains for the team were John Courtney and Brad Neveraski. Coach Fisher, commenting on the attitude of the team, said he was pleased with the fact that they never quit despite their many setbacks. He was also pleased with the improvement the players showed. The team began to work together and play better football as they got “the feel of the system.’’ There was a great deal of concentration on the development of attitude and discipline as well as fundamentals. Increasing strength in these areas and the adjustment to coach Fisher’s system may lead to the continuity needed for a brighter season in 1982-83. 132 VARSITY FOOTBALL JV’s Never Let Down (left to right) First row: Tracy Smith (manager), Doug Sygnecki, Kelly Miller, Tim Wotta, Jim Sikorski. Glynn Holst, Martin Rzepka, Mark Smokdl, Rex Yesh, Kenn Clark. Gary Branham, Joe Losinski, and Head Coach John Van Dam. Working with a small squad. Coach John Van-Dam led his JV Viking football team to a 1-5 record. Assisted by Coach Jeff Johnson, VanDam guided his Gridders through a rugged schedule which consisted of such powers as Kalamazoo Hackett, White Pigeon, Constantine and others. The coaches were pleased with their team's determination and “never-let-down” attitude. Their will to keep trying carried them to two very exciting ball games: their come-from-behind victory against Litchfield and their strong performance against a tough Quincy team. Joey Losinski was the recipient of the Coaches Award” for his determination and hard work as well as his talent. JV Football 133 Girls’ Varsity Improves Varsity Girl’s Basketball Head Coach Chris Brilinski led her Girl's Varsity Cagers to a 8-12 record. The lady Vikes were led by the strong seasonal play of Marcia Carpenter who was recognized on the area level. Many other players, including many underclassmen, turned in fine individual seasons as well. The highlight of the season for the team was their revenge victory over Quincy in the first round of the district tournament. The win was strictly in vain as the Vikes were upended by state-rated Homer in the final contest. The team’s 8-12 record was an improvement of last year’s and the quality of talent among the younger players shows promise for next year’s season. First row: Teresa Bell. Amy Lutz, Lisa Roussey, Roxann Litzau, Laurie Herman, and Kelly Kurtz. Second row: Polly Weaver (manager), JoAnn VanBlardom, Sandy Davis. Marcia Carpenter. They were guided by Jane Snyder, who was coaching basketball for the first time. The girls played with consistent enthusiasm throughout the year as evidenced by the scores of their games — six of their losses were by five points or less. These tight game situations and the hard work contributed by the team helped to develop many strong fundamentals which will be valuable to future Bronson teams. Head Coach Carroll Moon, Captains John Courtney and Kevin Losinski provided the leadership for the squad which will have eight returning lettermen. Serving as an incentive for the team was their will to work towards making Assistant Coach Charles Atkocunis’ final season a success. The Viking Grapplers had seven members qualify for Regional competition with four of those advancing to the State. The State participants included Seniors Sam Butters, Harold Gump, and Kevin Losinski, and Sophomore Ed Micklatcher. 136 WRESTLING WRESTLING 137 Varsity JV Basketball The varsity basketball team experienced a disappointing 13-8 season, losing several games by very small margins. This is the first girl’s softball team from Bronson to ever compete at the High School level and their season was not a disappointment. Carl Rifenburgh took the coaching position of the young team and guided them to an impressive record of 13-3. Although they did not advance very far in tournament play, they displayed a great deal of potential and proved that this program is worthy of continuance. Members of this landmark team included: Assistant Coach Mrs. Rifenburgh, Paula Turner, Stacy Hathaway, Brenda Barrows, Laura Gropp, Christine Junker. Ramona Smoker, Coach Carl Rifenburgh. Becky Fraser, coaching varsity volleyball at Bronson for the first time, led the team to a record of 8-5. Even though the girls played consistently throughout the season, they were unable to advance into tournament play after being defeated by a strong Pennfield squad in their pre-district game. Rookie Coach Ellen Sully guided the JV spikers to an im-pressive 8-11 record. Undeviating play, sparked by a great deal of enthusiasm created the winning combination. They were guided through their tough schedule by head coach Chris Brilinski. Marcia Carpenter and Dena Davis were state qualifiers in the discus and high jump respectively, with Davis going on to place second in the state. Coaching the boys’ track team again this year were Car-roll Moon and Keith Dykman. With only four retiring seniors, many underclassmen gained experience in game situations giving Coach Sineni an optimistic view of the future. The JV’s started their season with a bit of uncertainty because a head coach couldn’t be found. Varsity coach Sineni and Athletic Director Paul Turner helped to direct the team in the early part of the season until John Mayer, a Bronson citizen, volunteered. Under Mayer’s guidance, the team put together a record of 8-4. Front row: Rob Dixon, Darrell Sensat, Greg Vest, Rick Bell, Todd Aleman, Kevin Atkins and Rond Johnson. All these memories are placed here for everyone — teachers and friends — to look at and to laugh at, today and years into the future. As editor, my staff and I have compiled all these moments for you — the people who make the yearbook a success with all your smiling faces. I hope you will cherish these memories. I would also like to thank my staff for all their hard work, and especailly Mrs. Hurd, our advisor, who strived hard to make everything work out successfully. May you all find peace and happiness always. There does need to be acknowledged the contribution of our staff of students, many of whom have given of themselves tirelessly: Laurie Herman, editor;? Maria Albright, business and advertising manager, assisted by Lorinda Mayer; Leasa Modert, typist; artist Shawn Brewer, designer of the cover; photographer and artist Kyle Adamson, division pages; Brian Stroup, Cyndi Krontz,;Amy Weaver, Konnie Morrill, photographers; Brian Winney, activities; Christina Junker and Kris Malovey, administration and faculty; Betsy Shoun and Mary Lahrke, organizations; Laurie Herman, Seniors; Carlin Smith, sports; Gina Williams, underclassmen; and Tami Platter, who tackled any task I assigned her.
