ACTIVITES 79 Varsity Eight Balled Again It was a very unsuccessful season for the 1980 Varsity Gridders with many conflicts setting the stage for a 0-9 season. A late start, coupled with a rookie head coach, Ron Bercaw, gave way to a heartbreaking year. Bercaw was aided by assistants Coach Tinervia and Coach Zachariah. “Stone face Zach” was the defensive coordinator, while deep in the trenches T Tinervia led the burly linemen. Coach Bercaw chipped in with the offensive backs. The season was highlighted by a strong defensive performance spearheaded by high tacklers Beauchamp, Courtney, and Phil-son. The biggest positive feature of the season lay in the achievement of Thunderfoot Megargle who booted a 46-yard field goal, which proved to be an all-area record, just falling short of a state record. Team honors were as follows: Best Lineman: Mitch Minger; Best Back: Russ Megargle; Most Improved: Todd Moss; Most Valuable Player: Brian Philson; Best Defensive Lineman: Charles Beauchamp; Most Humorous: John Courtney. Receiving the coaches’ award of most valuable player was Grant Wonders. Team captains for the year were Russ Megargle, Brian Philson and Todd Smith. The young Vikes trudged on to a 1-6 record. The J.V. gridders, lacking only in experience, performed well, suffering two close, heart-breaking losses. Fisher’s squad picked up its only win in an action-packed thriller against Pittsford, when the Vikes scored in the 4th period to tie it at six all. Fisher's decision to try for two was a major factor, as Herman hurled a strike to Ruder, raising the score to 8- 6. Time expired and the Vikes were victors. Receiving awards for the Vikings were: Randy Mock and Brad Philson, designated as Most Valuable Players and Team Captains. Martin utilized her coaching skills well, but the team proved it had the winning spirit by devastating seven of their last eight opponents. For tourney action, Teresa Bell and Amy Lutz were moved up to the Varsity squad. SP0RT8 85 Varsity Cagers Surprise Everyone With Successful Season When the 1980-81 basketball season began. Coach Zabomck had no idea the Vikings would be so successful The team had to be rebuilt after losing eight seniors from last year's state semifinal team After a slow start the team caught fire during the second half of the season, posting 19 wins and 6 losses and gaining district and regional championships. Three seniors. Tom Burnett. Matt Houghton and Todd Smith, and one junior Curt Clemens joined sophomore superstar Mark German to make up the starting five Mark averaged 25.8 points a game and was named to the Class C almost all-state team and Big Mac All-area cage team Everybody will always remember the last-second shot Mark made ending Pennfield's perfect season Todd Smith averaged 11 9 points a game and was also named to the Big Mac All-area team He was a very good outside shooter and proved this during the first regional game with Perry scoring a game high of 26 points The other starters also made incredible contributions to the victories throughout the season Coach Zabomck summed it all up when he said before the River Valley quarterfinal game. There's no way I thought we'd have this kind of season It's only because of the desire of the kids They've learned togetherness and team play LX TOM BURNETT Front Row: Todd Smith. They started out the year by electing one representative for every twenty students. Their first major activity of the year was planning all the Homecoming activities. They then sponsored a costume day for Halloween with prizes given for best costumes. Christmas week festivities were a success ending with a much enjoyed assembly. The long awaited event. Twirp Week, was a source of excitement as all the classes participated in competition with each other. This year's Council was able to follow through with a project started by the previous year’s Council. Reaching their goal, the computer committee was able to purchase a TRS-80 Color Computer which is now being widely used by our students, particularly in the mathematics department. Besides the aforementioned activities, the Council also continually strives to improve relations among students and between students and teachers and students and administrators and tries to make Bronson High a good place to get an education. The simple happenings of today will be great memories tomorrow, And the fact that we can’t do it again might bring us a bit of sorrow. Yet the simple fact that we’ve lived life once, will let us think it a success, And the years to come will prove to us this year has been better than all the rest. The staff is also indebted to Lee Zimmerman, Taylor Publishing Company; Ron Philbrick, Carousel Studio; our advertisers; Morris Wood; Ray Smith, Bronson Journal; and to all the students and faculty of Bronson High School whose cooperation and enk thusiasm have helped to make Viking Memories a reality. Vera Hurd, advis air I don't think I have ever had another job in high school so demanding and frustrating as putting together and planning a ye book. It took a lot of my spare time during and after school to complete the 1981 Memories but it was uakwvor1h it. The memories in this yearbook are special, and in the future'after many of us have gone our separate ways, we will look back at the history we made and remember all the happy times, the sad times, the teachers, and most of all. our friends. I would like to give a special t lanks to my staff for putting up with all my impossible demands. There is one yet who remains to rect ve the whole staff ’s thanks and gratitude — our advisor, Mrs. Hurd. Without all her help and hard w rk, I know we would have never made it through this year. I, also, wish the Class of 1981 all the luck in tne world. , — 160 BRONSON HIGH SCHOOL Timira Perry editor MEMORIES 1981...
