WARRIOR 1984 BROKEN BOW HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME LXVIII It is often said that the best times of your life are your high school years. These times should be remembered, shared and cherished. As we, the Warrior Staff, present the 1984 Warrior, it is our distinct goal to spark a memory, produce a smile and help recapture the feelings that were experienced during high school. 2 Faculty .................................5 Seniors .................................9 Juniors ................................25 Sophomores .............................37 Freshmen ...............................49 Junior High ............................53 Organizations ..........................61 Athletics ............................ 79 Activities ........................... 103 Conclusion .......................... 126 3 4 Board of Education Terry Jensen ................. The money raised from the candles helped buy new equipment for the art department. The seniors held a special art show at the public library, displaying their finest work done that year. Other highlights of the year were the creative square art display and the Art Club trip to Omaha’s Joslyn Art Gallery. The sponsor of the Art Club is Paul Loomer. - Todd Graham Art Club: (Row 1) James Bigbee. Scott Horine. Bob Fitzpatrick. Todd Graham. Max Trotter. Connie Pracht. Cindy Wolford. Yvonne Slingsby. This year the B-Club helped sell tickets at home basketball games and did other projects at Loup Valley Conference and District tournaments. The traditional B-Club Chili Feed was not held this year. Instead, the members sold jewelry. A portion of this money helps pay for the chenille letters that are awarded. Girls B-Club officers were Angie Dowse, President; Ann Troxel, Vice President; Cindy Wolford, Secretary and Steph McMeen, Treasurer. Boys B-Club officers were Randy Vanderheiden, President; Marty Baxter, Vice President and Terry Mason, Secretary Treasurer. The sponsors are Mr. Dean and Mr. Sy-brant. The biggest event for DECA every year is the State Career Development Conference and this year was no exception. The conference, held in the Lincoln Hilton, had over 600 students from all over Nebraska competing in various marketing areas. Students attending from the BBHS chapter were: Darcy Zeigler and Marie Gibson in restaurant marketing, Beth Daily, Teresa Fenech, Steph Fenton, Stacey Baxter and Angie Huhman in apparel and accessories, and Kenda Nelson in finance and credit. Beth Daily represented the chapter in the parade of presidents and Sheri White-man placed first in her division of apparel and accessories. The conference was a big success and the Broken Bow DECA students had a great time. 65 El Circulo De Espanol The Richard Simmons Show This year was the fifth year for the club to sponsor their refugee friend Pascual from Guatemala. Members paid dues and sold advent calendars for this cause. A hayrack ride was enjoyed at the Briggs’ farm and many smores were devoured! The annual Day of the Dead party was held on Nov. 5. This celebration is similar to Halloween. At Christmas time, the seniors celebrated by acting out the foreign version of the Christmas story with the posadas. The club also went caroling. A lot of hard work and long hours were spent preparing for the annual Foreign Language Day in Lincoln. Unfortunately a blizzard and bad roads put a damper on this activity. The cast did get to perform their skit, which was a satire of the Richard Simmons Show, at the “Creative Square” and the 2nd year students’ supper for their parents. The year was brought to an end at the Fine Arts Banquet by installing the new officers. Throughout the year students wishing to go to Spain sold seafood and jewelry. (Row 1) Paca Gottschalk. Their efforts, combined with the knowledge of Adviser Don Davis, resulted in the largest publications the journalism class has ever written. Several editions were over ten pages and the last edition was a whopping twenty! Some of the students attended a journalism workshop in Lincoln. Special sessions were held on photography, news coverage and design. The price of the INDIAN was raised to fifteen cents this year. The paper was also mailed to several subscribers in the community. Not only must members be above average scholastically, they must show leadership, good character and be a service to their school and community. New members receive certificates and pins as proof of their membership. At graduation senior members are adorned with a gold cord. This year ten members were initiated and an honorary membership was given to foreign exchange student, Sue Newland. Members were accepted by Matt Varney, Rotary Club Representative. They sponsored a number of dances, everything from a Sadie Hawkins dance to the Mid-winter Summer Dance. No one can forget all the interesting and crazy posters that the council was always putting up! The council also worked in conjunction with the Spanish and Art Clubs selling seafood, just for the halibut! (A quote from the fearless president Brett!) A first for the council was the football jersey auction, which was a big success. District and State Conventions will bring back many fond memories, and provided the council with new ideas. The council also sponsored their annual teacher appreciation breakfast and the honor tea. Student Council had a busy year, but it was a lot of fun providing the student body with a wide range of activities. Student Council: (Row 1) Karen Devine. Lisa Spanel. Yearbooks were meant to be memory books as well as historical accounts of the past high school year. As you flip through the 1984 Warrior, we hope special friends, places and events are frequently recalled. Putting a yearbook together is not an easy task. There is an incredible amount of detail and time involved. The 1984 Warrior was no exception. It’s not easy tracking down over 70 kindergarten pictures from the seniors! Thanks go to the mothers for digging through their family albums. Our adviser, Mr. Hamblin, deserves a great deal of thanks for his advice, dedication and patience. The Indian football team began the year with new dedication. Led by Senior Co-Captains Randy Van-derheiden, Scott Taubenheim and Brett Oltman, the year progressed with the usual peaks and valleys. One thing was for certain: the Indians had gained the respect of all its opponents. The enthusiasm that climaxed with a big win at Cozad on the final night of the season simply exemplified the incentive and ambition the team had the entire year. Jerry Haines and Mike Hefle-bower were named to the SWC first team and Tadd Delozier, Scott Taubenheim, John Dockweiler, Marty Baxter, John Noel and Randy Van-derheiden received honorable mention. -Coach Dean Leading rusher John Dockweiler averaged 93.7 yards per game. 1983 Football Team: (Front) G. In the Broken Bow invitational, the girls played an awesome game, beating state rated North Platte St. Pats. They finished second in the tournament. The excitement did not end there. In the district tourney, the 6th seated Lady Indians beat 3rd seated O’Neill to advance to the semifinals. Here, they lost a heart breaker to Albion. An enormous crowd burst into a frenzy of excitement. Bow players converged on Dave and shared the thrill of victory with their teammate. That 10-footer, which came with 5 seconds remaining in the game, put Bow up by one over Cozad. This and the many jam sessions staring the “Wizard of the Rim” Gerald Pirnie, the “Ultimate Scoring Weapon” Mike Peace, the “A-Man” Terry Mason, who dished out a record setting number of assists, along with the man with the moves, “Smiling Jake” Jacobsen, was only part of the many exciting moments of this year’s boys basketball season. With an 11-7 record and the help of Coach Meyers, the cagers came within four points from a state tournament birth, as they lost to Albion in the district finals. Although this was a disappointing loss, the Indians brought back old memories of awesome competition and the turn out of massive crowds, with support unmatched in the area. Another strength of the Indians was the depth of the bench and the support these players gave the team. Senior “Smiling Jake summed up the season saying, “I had a fun time, and I wish I could do it all over again ...” Lee Jacobsen Tadd Delozier 84 BOW 56-46 North Platte St. Pats BOW 94-34 Loup City BOW 64-40 Ord Bow 41-42 GRAND ISLAND C. Several highlights of the year were the snowy night spent in Bassett, the winning overtime shot by Dixie Nielsen at Ogallala, and the first round win at districts over St. Paul. The team really showed a lot of hustle and teamwork. Achieving SWC honors were Angie Dowse, Second Team, and Karen Devine and Barb Briggs, Honorable Mention. Although the team record doesn’t show it, the team members were all very close and worked well together. The season ended up being very enjoyable, with the exception of all the lines they had to run! Ann took the crown in the Class B 100 meter low hurdles for the second year in a row. Besides the 100 meter hurdles, Ann set a new school record in the 800 meter run. Cindy Wolford broke her own school record in the 3200 meter run. The new long jump record was set by Angie Dowse. State Qualifiers: Anne Troxel. Their only trophy came at the Burwell Wrangler Relays, but at each meet they strove to improve personal records. Gerald Pirnie was the lone school record breaker. He surpassed his own school record in the high jump with a 6’6” effort. Three members qualified for the state meet: Kenny Hill in the 3200, Gerald Pirnie for the high jump and Nick Winchester in the triple jump. Gerald was the only medal winner for the Indians. Only during Homecoming Week could one expect to find Superman, punk rockers and male students in skirts parading around BBHS halls. The spirit of Homecoming was overwhelming this year as a large percentage of students took part in the festivities. Hall decorating was won by the juniors, but the seniors won’t forget how their hall brought the class closer together.
