Rocky Dockweiler came within a few seconds of being the class B state champion but second place at state is a tremendous accomplishment in itself. We are especially hopeful with the potential in years to come as our young wrestlers gain experience. Travis Trotter who also went to state is one among many who will represent us well in years to come. 71 72 Boys Track Boys Track Team Row 1-Jeff Mattox, Lance Miller. In fact, they didn't even sec the sun until the District meet in Lexington. Even though the weather was bad the overall performances were good. As a team, BBHS finished third in most of their meets as well as finishing third in the Conference meet held on our own home turf this year. Individual honors are in order too. Val Warren, Ann Troxcl, and Angie Dowse all qualified for state competition. Val finished sixth in the 100 meter run and Ann led the way by winning the Class B 100 meter hurdles in a record setting time of 15.03. Let it also be known that Ann had an undefeated season in the 100 meter hurdles. Special honors go to the 400 meter relay team consisting of Barb Briggs, Val Warren, Ann Troxel. and Angie Dowse. Even though they didn't qualify for state competition because of a tic, they ended up with the sixth fastest time in the state. Next year they will have the opportunity to put that down on record! Cindy Wolford, Val Warren and Ann Troxcl brought special honors to BBHS by setting new school records. “They showed some real dedication and good efforts,” stated Coach Darrel Sybrant. “and I appreciated their leadership through the year.” Sprinters Tami Moffett, Ann Troxel, Angie Dowse, Barb Briggs, Marcia Eberle, Dana Breiner, Julie Burnett, Carla Wells, and Val Warren. 75 Weight events: Tracy Kciborz, Kenda Nelson. Golf The Broken Bow High School Golf Team, consisting of 5 seniors and 5 freshmen had a very successful year in 1983. Despite little or no spring weather, we managed to capture two team invitational championships and placed well in the others. Probably our biggest asset this year was our consistency in our top six players. If one player had a bad day, the others always picked up the slack. We hate to see our senior leadership go this year but are looking forward to more successes with a young team for 1984. -Nick Dean Golf Sponsor-Nick Dean Golf Team Mike Williams Dave Mack Mark Peterson Dan Williams Scott Varney Brad Stithem James Gallentine Doug Munnell Bill Christen 7 77 Junior High Football 1st row, Richard Dc Lozier, Jody Bemcrt, Scott Kratzer, Mark Peterson. We installed officers and decided on a money making project. That being, the traditional B-Club Chili Feed. It was quite successful and the proceeds were used to donate a MCS stereo system for the weight room. Another project initiated by the 1982-1983 B-Clubs was that of distributing individual membership cards to all high school letter winners. We hope this practice will be continued and we feel it is an honor to be a member of this club. The 1982-1983 Girl’s B-Club officers were Donna Wehling, President; Jacque Shea, Vice President; Angie Dowse, Secretary; and Stephanie McMeen, Treasurer. In addition, about fifteen students from Sargent, Callaway, Anslcy, and Anselmo-Merna phoned in reports to be aired each Saturday morning. We initiated a new feature on our radio program this year. At about 20 minutes after the hour, sophomore Laura Drake came on the air with a commentary called “Fancy That.” Our chief engineer this year was Doug Munnell, who often took total charge of the program in Mr. Davis’s absence. Others who shared the engineering chores included Dave Mack, Mike Williams, Brett Oltman, and John Noel. Concord members Front row-Travis Trotter, Todd Graham, Mike Cumpston, Dave Mack. David Dean. Our next project was to raise money to support our friend Pascual, a refugee child living in Guatemala. We worked diligently throughout the month of December selling Advent calendars for this purpose. The Christmas season rolled around and, following an old tradition, the seniors reinacted a foreign version of the Christmas story. Afterwards we celebrated by exchanging gag-gifts. Some of us were more gagged than gifted! In March we traveled to Lincoln for Foreign Language Day, where we won first place with our Spanish play “Anita”. Many of our members received superior ratings in the poetry-reciting and honors-testing competitions. We spent our lunch break at Godfather’s Pizza with our good friends, Roger Craig, Jaime Williams, and Allen Lyday! We ended our exciting year by installing our new officers at Pressey Park. The Picnic was great but the river wasn’t! (Julie, Holly, Eva, Steph, and Tami would like to thank Brett and Rocky for the swim!) FBLA members started the year with the election of officers and having a secret-sister to remember on her birthday or holiday. Also, gifts were exchanged at a Christmas party in December. The chapter’s money-making projects were successful. Over $400 was earned by selling a boutique of items and having a table for merchandise and baked items at the FHA Bazaar. In October, the chapter hosted a color seminar where all learned about the importance of color and how it affects one’s shopping. The members decided not to attend state convention and instead spend $20 on each member that wished to have the color analysis determined for her. The final event of the year will be an end-of-the-year party; secret-sisters will be revealed at this time. The main event was hosting the District 8 convention with over 300 attending from 12 Nebraska chapters. Jolene Pirnie was our District 8 Vice President. Other activities included wrapping Christmas gifts for the needy, selling roses during FHA week, and the annual Barney Bake Off. Next was the Annual Slave Auction, held in order to raise money for State Convention and the Awards Banquet. The year continued with many livestock judging and tractor driving contests. Mike Bigbee, Jay Poland, and Lisa Clarke all placed first in various contests at the district level and qualified for state competition. The highlight of the year was when most of the officers and other members attended the 55th Annual State FFA Convention in Lincoln. The Broken Bow Chapter returned home with many awards and some new ideas to improve our chapter. The 1982-1983 year has been fun and challenging to the officers and members of FFA. We hope the coming year will be as successful as this year has been. The primary purpose of the Student Council is to act as a mediator between the school administration and the student body. They listen to the complaints of the students and try to relate them to the administration in hopes of a mutally agreeable solution to the problems. Another function that the Student Council performs is that of sponsoring many activities such as the Homecoming Dance. We hope that their leadership has been appreciated and that the Student Council will continue to be a group of outstanding leaders of Broken Bow High School. National Honor Society New 1983 Members New Seniors initiated were Holly Brunken, Shelley Gottschalk. Kristi Horn, Donna Wehling, and Mike Williams. New Juniors initiated were Cheryl Day, Teresa Gilbertson, Lee Jacobsen, Terry Mason, June Nelson, Jolcnc Pir-nie, Bonnie Pracht, and Cindy Wolford. New Sophomores initiated were Barb Briggs. Marcia Eberle, and LeeAnn Heflcbower. The National Honor Society is just what the name implies. It is a nation wide organization of honor students. There are many requirements to become a member. As well as having scholastic ability, (an accumulative grade point average of 3.0 or all A’s and B's), the student must show leadership, character. and service to the school and community. The process of selection involves many people. First, all the teachers are asked to rate the students on a scale of one to five. Then a rotating panel of seven teachers read all the applications and, considering the other teacher’s ratings, they make their decision. The National Honor Society has been sponsored by the Rotary Club but this year is the first they they have been actively involved for the last 10 years. This year the new members were accepted by the President of the club, Howard Runyan. Members of NHS include Julie Sammons, Eva Adams. The Journalism class published eleven editions of the INDIAN this year under the direction and help of Don Davis. Mr. Davis has sponsored this activity for the last two years and says there is a lot of work involved. Although most of the writing is done within the classroom, there are many jobs to be done outside of class such as develoing film, printing pictures, typing, final typing, design, and laying out the paper. Midway through the school year the format for the INDIAN changed to that of a magazine. This was so popular and successful that the INDIAN will probably use the same format next year. Also, in the near future, Mr. Davis hopes to use computers to cut down on the amount of time spent on the Journalism class publications. Doug Munnell, Kara Golden, and Mark Eggleston were the INDIAN'S editors this year. The darkroom technicians were Doug Munnell and Val Warren. Special thanks go to the CUSTER COUNTY CHIEF for their time and generosity. Journalism class: Teri Linvillc, Lesa Moore, Kara Golden, Val Warren. Bob Stamp, Tim Smith. Dave Burdick, Mark Eggleston. Long hours took their toll on the editors, but usually the production of the annual was a rewarding experience. As you look through the pages of this yearbook we hope that you can reflect back upon days gone by. We wish to express our sincere thanks to our advisor, Mr. Hamblin, for his continued efforts in making each BBHS yearbook a success. 99 Warrior members: Lori Bailey, Donna Wehling, Julie Sammons, Kenda Nelson, Vanessa Spencer, Denise Deaver. One-Act-Play Broken Bow’s one-act play did very well this year. We won the district contest held in St. Paul in mid-January, and we went on to score highly in the state contest at Kearney. Actually, we did two short plays under the general title of “The World of Sholom Alei-chcm.” We jokingly called them “The Angel Play,” and “The Goat Play,” but that was only because the office had difficulty pronouncing their real titles, “Bontche Schweig” and “A Tale of Chelm.” Both plays involved life in traditional Polish-Jewish communities. In addition to the contest performances, we performed for the student body at a special assembly and for the public during an art festival dubbed “Creative Square.” That event was held in the city square from 6:00-8:30 p.m., April 28. From that final performance, we concluded that, despite Rifkele’s arguments, “A pitcher of water can, indeed, lay eggs.” One-Act-Play Cast David Mack ........
