2 We, the Warrior staff are pleased to present the students and faculty of Broken Bow High School with the 1982 Warrior. The purpose of a yearbook is to serve as a record of the events and happenings throughout the school year. We hope that as you examine the pages of the Warrior special moments will be brought to mind. Friendships, ball games, club activities and important events are just a few of the memories we have attempted to preserve with in the Warrior pages. Laugh with, cry with, but most of all remember with the 1982 Warrior. 3 4 5 6 Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Donald Vanderheiden 1 R. R. Simmons, DDS . . President Gerald Sloggett ... The 1981 volleyball season was an explosion of excitement! Ability, hard work and determination lead the Indians to state under the outstanding coaching of Mary lo Morris and Mick Patch. The boys finished with a 1-15 record, which was an improvement over the previous season. The team was a young one having only three seniors. They were successful in the fact that they improved every game, and moved out of the conference cellar for the first time in three years. The players always tried hard and were competitive at all times, which was a positive reflection on the players, the school and coaches. After a slow start at the Broken Bow Invitational the Indians steadily improved. The varsity team brought home their sixth straight trophy from Burwell and finished strong in the Southwest Conference. The reserves had a fine year and won the Broken Bow Reserve Invitational for the third straight year. This year both Rocky Dockweiler and Stuart Gilbertson placed in the state tournament. Rocky finished the season at 24-7 with a third place finish at Lincoln. Stuart was 24-9 and placed sixth. Broken Bow had five place winners at District. Rocky and Stuart — 4th, Travis Trotter — 5th, Bob Hall and Brad Holcomb — 6th. Conference place winners; Rocky, Stuart and Dave Mack — 2nd, Bob, Brad, Tony Carroll, Bill Owen and Todd Leggett — 3rd and Brett Oltman — 4th. The team started off in the heat of August with two-a-day workouts and ended in the chill of October when participating in the state meet. John Sweenie was the top individual scorer. He was a decisive winner in the district meet finishing far ahead of the pack. A girls team was something new to BBHS. Senior Janna Land and sophomore Ann Troxel made up the new team and did well for their first year. The whole cross country team gualified for the state meet finishing thirteenth in class B. Coach Mark Russet] Team members (1 to r) front row: Shane Stark, Terry Mason, Jamie Mattox, Kenny Hill, Janna Land and Ann Troxel. Back row: Coach Russell, Richard Logan, Gregg Landkamer, Brad Spencer, John Sweenie, David Russell and Jay Landkamer. Varsity Golf First year coaching by Jim Hibbler left a big impact on the 1982 golf team. Coach Hibbler seemed pleased with the effort his team put forth, in a year marked with bad weather. Senior Rick Hawks played consistent golf to lead the Bow team in stroke average. Rick was followed closely by Dave Mack and Mike Williams with Jamie Mattox and Doug Munnell rounding out the varsity five. A pleasant surprise this year was Japanese exchange student Yoko Shinbo. Although Yoko knew nothing of the game of golf before she began the season, she learned quickly. Rick shows the style that won him top team honors. Ooll team members (1 to r) front row: Doug Munnell, Jamie Mattox, Rick Hawks. Dave Mack and Mike Williams. Back row: David Dean, Bert Kennedy. Darla Mattox and Yoko Sninbo. 13 Boys Track The 1982 track season started in a snowstorm at Burwell and ended in a rain drenched state meet in Omaha. In spite ot the poor weather, the track squad made steady improvement throughout the season. John Sweenie, the Seth Best award winner, was the high scorer on the team. The squad was the youngest in many years and should be greatly improved by the 1983 season. Boys Track Team (1 to r) front row: John Noel, Brad Ballenger, Todd Graham. The chapter, under the direction of Eileen Muller, had strong leadership on the local, district and state levels. Local president Julie Ditson served as a member of the March-of-Dimes Pep Squad, while vice president Land was the district 8 treasurer. Tricia Bloemker served as the State Officer representing district 8 and as the State Public Relations Chairperson. Ms. Muller acted as district 8 advisor and as a member of the state advisory board. Activities throughout the year included a coded dinner, all-school bazaar, ice-cream sand-which sales and the annual installation banquet. At the state convention held in April Karen Devine was selected to the Pep Squad. Jo Pirnie was appointed as our district representative and Tricia Bloemker was the recipient of the Jenni M. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Don Davis, the 81-82 editions of the INDIAN were among the finest this school has ever produced. Twelve editions were published by the 28 juniors and seniors enrolled in Journalism. The papers (varying in length from a two page Christmas edition to several editions of eight pages) sold to students for a dime a copy. Is it of interest to the students and Is is current were the two guestions which governed the selection of stories to be included in each edition of this year’s INDIAN. The result of such guidelines was a well written paper which students, faculty, and parents anxiously awaited and eagerly read. The first requirement to be met before being elected to this society is Scholarship. Members must have a 3.0 average based on a perfect 4.0 average scholastically: but scholarship alone will not admit a student to the National Honor Society. To scholarship must be added service; to service leadership; and to leadership character. A student may therefore, make all A's and still miss the National Honor Society. A student may be elected to the Society as a 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student. Membership to the Honor Society is permanent unless the member violates one or all of the principles of the National Honor Society. Those students who have attained this high standard, and who have been chosen by faculty are, therefore, greatly to be congratulated upon the excellence of their record while in high school. The Summer Dance in the middle of January was one of the year's highlights. It was the one time the cafeteria was actually warm. Other unforgetable activities included the candy cane-o-grams delivered at Christmas, the teacher's appreciation breakfast and the various state and district conventions attended by several of the members. It is a big task which only a few attempt. Putting together a yearbook consists of many hours of frustration, worries and lots of hard work. The result is a book to recall memories when high school days are long gone. During the week it is not unusual to walk down the brightly decorated halls and see students dressed in togas or caught up in the Punk Rock craze. Caught up in the excitement of the festivities, students often develop a new found sense of school spirit in anticipation of the crowning of king and queen. This year was no different from the rest as Angie Cumpston and James Gibson became the new rulers of BBHS Homecoming. Tammy Shears and Russ Smith were honored as Princess and Prince of the festivities. Eleven have failed the Queen's Royalty test to the dismay of all young lovers, especially Lady Larken and Sir Harry. A new contender, Princess Winnifred, wins the favor of Dauntless by athletically swimming the moat. The Queen is determined to eliminate Fred by the Pea Test. But when Winnifred doesn't sleep a wink, the Queen is livid. To protect the Princess, Dauntless shouts his mother down. The Mouse has devoured the Hawk.
