The memory of Rob's quiet, loving, and giving spirit will remain in our hearts and minds long after the pages in this yearbook have yellowed with age. 6 ADMINISTRATION 1776-1976 In this year of the Bi-Cen-tennial in our country we look back at the history of our school and reflect on the accomplishments and achievements of our graduates over these many years. Many of our graduates have spread throughout the country and their many achievements have helped make our country a better place to live. In the year of our Bi-Centennial, we are going to graduate our 86th class from Broken Bow High School. You, the Bi-Cen-tennial class, could be our greatest class. The sky is your limit. You are graduating from a great school and you are living in a great country. The rest is up to you. Good Luck and Godspeed, Keith L. Wade, Principal Congratulations to the 1976 Annual Staff on a fine publication that will furnish many hours of enjoyment for those that open its cover. Also, congratulations to the members of the graduating class of 1976. May each of you live your life to its fullest and look back upon your days in Broken Bow High School as the happiest days of your life. Louis H. Stithem Vice-Principal Director of Activities 7 The 1975-76 school year has been a year of special significance for many reasons. For each of you there has been provided an oportunity to acquire the knowledge and skill necessary in preparing for a future vocation. There has also been opportunities to develop lasting friendships and to participate in a wide variety of activities. I believe that both aspects of life as a student at Broken Bow High School are valuable in helping you to become a good citizen. It is my sincere hope that your experiences —both in the classroom and in other activities—has been an important and rewarding phase of your life. Congratulations to the annual staff for the many hours that they have devoted to making this yearbook a reality. May it provide many pleasant memories of B.B.H.S. Roger H. Hanson, Supt. Tony, as he is affectionately called, comes from a family of five. His father owns four medium ranches and his mother teaches at the elementary level. Tony's family lives in the city, but spends their weekends on the ranch. Here Tony developed his hobbies which include motorcycling, swimming, ranching, hunting, and soccer. Tony describes himself as being calm and somewhat introverted. I believe in working hard to achieve something. I really appreciate what I can get this way, I enjoy helping people and having friends I can trust and are interested in the same things I am. I have my own way of thinking but I am always willing to learn and accept new or different ideas. Tony and Mrs. Bloemker Tony and friends Anthony Pereira 29 FASHIONS THEN AND NOW As you can tell from the pictures above that the times have really changed for High School fashions. The typical student at the turn of the century wore starched collars, ties, high-button shoes, long frilly dresses, frenchrolls, and short, cropped above the ear, hair. The staff thought that it would be interesting, in view of the Bi-Centennial, to compare today's fashions with those of fifty years ago. Today's typical student might be attired in T-shirts with all types of pictures, sayings, and designs on the front and back--the wilder the better. Going with these T-shirts are the ever prevalent jeans and their many styles. 30 Shoes for any mood Hair styles vary for both boys and girls. In comparison with the mini-skirts of a few years ago the longer length skirts are a drastic change. Even the fact that girls wear dresses and skirts to school is a change from a few years when the standard garb was a pair of ragged blue jeans. Male fashions have also changed. They, like the girls, are dressing neater and are more fashion conscious. Hair is being styled shorter with the Afro being popular. The guys are also wearing wild-print shirts with beads. Popular shoe styles include the cowboy boot, platforms, tennis shoes, sandals, waffle stompers, and bump toed shoes with heavy heels. Skirt lengths have come down. 31 History Of The Broken Bow High School By-. Pam Croghan, Class of '76 Russ Mayo, Class of '76 The first subscription school in Custer County started in 1875 and was located at Douglas Grove in the home of Mrs. Ed Eubank although the first school in Broken Bow was located in a little sod building east of town. This was used until the fall of 1883 when it was abandoned for a vacant brick building located on the east side of the square. This is probably the building where Broadway Market is now located. The following school term was held in a sod house two blocks north of the square on 8th Avenue. In 1883, 23 students were enrolled in Broken Bow High School. In 1885, 39 pupils were enrolled. In the year 1888 the city had outgrown its school facilities and a frame building was erected. It was named South Ward School and was located on the block where the Elks Lodge is now located. It was erected at a cost of approximately $12,000. The reason for such a sudden jump from one room sod buildings to a two story frame house was due to the arrival of the railroad two years earlier and the sudden growth of Broken Bow. In this building, the first high school was held in the upstairs portion. The first graduation in the Broken Bow High School took place in 1890 with one graduate, William Talbot. Three girls made up the graduating class of 1891, Sarah Snyder, Cora Coffman, and EvaWeimer. The 1892 enrollment was 400 students and the total expenditure was $6,700. Between the period of 1890 and 1909, 150 pupils finished high school. By 1898, a full complete system had been established. This included twelve grades and a High School. 32 High School Building, dedicated on February 17, 1911 PAGE SPONSOR: HOWARD L. BALLENGER INSURANCE The old North Ward School Custer College, used as a Junior High In the fall of 1909 by public vote of citizens of the school district, bonds were voted and this began the construction of another edifice. This was to be used strictly for the high school and the cost was set at $39,000 to $40,000. This building was located on a lot the district purchased about one block south from the North Ward School at a cost of $4,400. This high school building faced North 9th Avenue just north from North C Street and a whole block in between it and North School was used for a playground for years. This building was dedicated with an elaborate dedication program on February 17, 1911. It was of two different colors of brick, three stories with a gym in the basement, a large assembly room upstairs, and modern (for that era) facilities throughout, finest available equipment and classrooms, equal to any other city within the entire state and a fine faculty engaged for the educational benefit of the high school students. This was the building to be used exclusively for the high school from this time until just prior to World War II, when a new two-story all brick structure was added to the north connected to this building. This two-story structure is the present Junior High. PAGE SPONSOR BOW BOOTERIE The old High School Building and the present Junior High 33 In 1908 becuase of an overflow of students, part of two grades were moved into Custer College, located on the block south of the present high school. In 1911 when the old high school building was finished, those two grades were moved into it. In 1919 the School District voted bonds for 9,500 dollars to purchase the Custer College building for use as a Junior High School. This building was used as the junior high until just prior to World War II when the present junior high was built. It was a two-story brick structure. In 1938 the old high school building was remodeled. New heating and lighting systems were added along with new plumbing. The walls were replastered, redecorated and the new stairway steps were installed. A new huge library and study hall along with new chairs and tables were added to this old high school. In 1937 the corner stone for the South Ward School was laid and before this building was completed construction was begun on a new North Side School. These buildings were used for many years until replaced by the present North Park School in 1953. Then in 1969 our present high school was dedicated. The courses offered in the past were business, college preparatory, and english composition. The courses offered today are college preparation. Vocational Home Economics, Vocational Agriculture, Vocational Distributive Education, and General. The early facilities consisted of a domestic science department, a manual training department, and a library, a large gym and an assembly room that seated over 200. In 1937, these facilities were added to the high school; rooms and shop for Vocational Agriculture, room for Junior High use, auditorium and gym with dressing room and an economics room. The new high school was started in the fall of 1967 and the students moved in December 1968. The Indians had an overall season record of 2-6-1 in the tough Southwest Conference. A factor this season was the lack of size and the loss of star Half-back Don Johnson, who suffered a knee injury early in the season. Senior Les Kulhanek earned All Conference Honors and Seniors Brent Yanagida, Don Johnson, and Ron Birnie, and Sophomore Kent Sloggett were named Honorable Mention. The so called Cinderella team ended the season with a 7-7 record and a second place finish in the SWC. The girls went into the SWC tournament with determination conquering two top-rated teams, Lexington and Holdredge but lost to Ogallala. With the second place finish at SWC, the team had high hopes for districts, but disaster struck and the girls were beaten by Cozad in the first round. The season was a good one though, thanks to the support of the parents, boosters and the students. During the week before graduation the seniors rushed to get all their make-up work in, go to the Senior Tea, and say goodbye to all their teachers and friends. Some say that they are glad to be leaving, but many linger in the halls that have become so familiar to them. Checking out. PAGE SPONSOR: BOOSTER CLUB Success! Walker III Dear Bob, On behalf of the graduating class of 1976, we would like to remember you with a smile and a laugh. We are going to miss you. Bob, but we cannot forget you: the way you walked, the way you talked, and how you always wore those so familiar farm caps. But mostly your laugh we cannot forget. We remember you as the type of kid always looking for the good times in life, always with a sparkle in your eye. Things just won't be the same without you, Bob. Tears are falling for you, but we will try to remember to laugh. The sun will always shine over you and for all the beautiful memories you left us. You're going to be there when we walk across the stage for graduation, for you are a part of us. You're always going to be there, Bob, always. Well, the lights are about ready to go out, so we guess it's time to say goodbye. We all look back now and only wish we could have let you know how much you are to us. May God keep you safe and bless you...
