tiftOCtftV WARRIOR Published by THE SENIOR CLASS of Broken Bow High School 1972 TABLE OF CONTENTS A great poet once said, A little nonsense now and then Is relished by the best of men. We therefore, interject this bit of levity - not to make a joke of anyone but to add a bit of spice to the otherwise serious tone with which this memory book was produced. BAND SCHOOL BUILDINGS SENIOR CLASS PLAY SCIENCE FOREWORD It is enough. Love fills my soul with memory. As these words open our book, the WARRIOR staff of 1972 hopes to bring to you, memories that will last a lifetime. The staff has tried to picture for you a year filled with achievements, happiness, friendships, and school activities. When you are reading through this book, we hope you get as much satisfaction and pleasure out of it as we did in preparing it for you. As young adults, ready to emerge into this ever-changing world, we should be aware that a person with ideas leaves the people who are only interested on the bottom step of the ladder. DIANNA KENNEDY Co-Editor DEDICATION With a little of the Old West still lingering, Central Nebraska has pushed her way to the top and stayed with flourishing prosperity. Known as the Gateway to the Sandhills, Broken Bow has done an exceptional job in being able to retain a little of the old, while welcoming the newness of evergrowing industry and modern invention. It is with deep feelings of gratitude and pride that the annual staff dedicates the 1972 WARRIOR to a great place to live, NEBRASKAland. The Warrior Staff R EACH OF YOU IS THE DESIGN OF YOUR OWN LIFE BE A FINE ARCHITECT Did you ever think of comparing the building of your life ! with the building of a very important building that would take | a lifetime to build and furnish? If you were going to build a house, hospital, church, or skyscraper, you would plan very, I?----very carefully. You should plan the building of your life just ■ as carefully, don't you think? First, determine what specific ? goal you want to achieve in life, then dedicate yourself to its 1 attainment. Then you will need its detailed plans of your in-l terests, your mental, physical, social and spiritual health, your j — . associates, your habits, and your use of spare time. Then de- . velop supreme confidence in yourself and your ability to reach [ your selected goal. : Each day of your life is one detail of your plan. You must i make each day count. Try to make each day a perfect detail ! of building by filling all your time with worthwhile activities. . Keep in mind each day, that you are the architect of your own 1 career and life; that you are striving to build the good life. Plan your life and work your plan. i — SOME STARS TO HELP YOU STEER BY I Make these ships yours; Citizenship, stewardship, ownership, j sportsmanship. It Happiness spills on you, when you are carrying it to others. J Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, to all the 1 people you can. Wisdom is an unusual amount of common sense, k A smile can add a great deal of face value. ’ Sincerely, The 1971-1972 school year is nearing an end and I would like to thank each and every student for their help in making this a successful school year. 1 have often been asked, What makes a successful school year. First, a well trained and devoted faculty; second, a cooperative, interested group of parents and third, the students themselves. As I think back over this past year, I recall a group of — students who were alert, intelligent, cooperative and proud of their school. You have exhibited leadership in your community. You have shown respect for fellow students and teachers. You are a credit to your school, your community and your parents. We have had as fine a group of students as “ any school in the state of Nebraska. Congratulations on a job well done. We are proud of you and may you continue to grow and may you reap great | benefits from your labors. Sincerely, Keith L. To honor the past four years of the finest in motion picture making, the Motion Picture Association today released news stories filled with the finest of Film Festivals. The association zeroed back tc that golden year, 1969, when the Best Picture of the Year was awarded to “Stithem Up! , starring Calamity CAROLYN, with co-stars Shootin' SHEA, Rootin' Tootin’ ROG and Spurrin' SANDY. Members of the board were Censors DOTY, HOLMES, HORN, KLEEB, and ROBERTS. Special attention was given to the entertainment crew which was outstanding in forming a get-together party at the end of the shooting. The following year’s screen-breaker was “Gator’s Aid,” The mood was one of tense anxiety in awaiting the outcome of the plot. Several of the crew worked hard in gaining additional funds by serving members of the higher social class in a banquet. Later - a cast party was held honoring old stars SANDY RICE, ROBIN KOOZER, and VERLANE KLEEB. These modest performers gave honorable mention to upcoming stars NANCY BAKER, SHELLY HUTT, CURT ROBERTS, and JERRY SHEA. All agreed the most spinetingling scene was the one in which water balloons reigned supreme. The third year of the Golden Era was perhaps its most rewarding led by Director JERRY SHEA, Co-Producers JOHNSON and DOTY, and Manager MIKE WHITESEL, the most magnificent production of all time emerged, with the title of ‘‘Aquarius.’’ A special committee consisting of such famous figures as DEB CARPENTER, PATTI FARRITOR, SHELLY HUTT, JIM RICHARDSON, and JIM SHELBOURN issued the following five academy awards for: Props, Lighting, Music, Costumes, and Choreography. The writer of this special, known to his followers by the pen name of “Hound of the Bussettvilles,’’ presented the whole crew with expensive rings as a token of remembrance. Unfortunately, his thoughtfulness took the company into great debt. It forced everyone off the set and onto the street corners and alleys selling ChriStmas cards and candles; not to mention the Snack Stand down on Track’s Fifth Avenue.” The fourth and final year of 1972 brought the smash hit, “Long Story.’ The script consultant, Mr. WADE, undertook the difficult task of offering the leads to ROD ARMSTRONG, DeANN DRUERY, GREG BELL, and NEIL POWELL. This fantastic show was viewed by several high class critics - namely ANN BURKE, CAROLYN BREWER, DEB CARPENTER, PATTI FARRITOR, SHELLY HUTT. JIM RICHARDSON, JERRY SHEA, and JIM SHELBOURN. To those whom it offended they reply - “Being a senior means never having to say you’re sorry.” But now the lights are dimming and cameramen pack their equipment for the last time. Performers exchange words of encouragement and luck, as all set out to new careers. It is doubtful that whatever success attained will mean as much as this episode of their lives. Special friends, activities, and experiencing new feelings ... these are all scenes which no one will forget. SENIOR PROPHECY by NEIL POWELL Dear Mr. Cupl, Well, Mr. Cupl, here it is - 20 years since the great class of 72 was graduated. Time has flown and so have some of the class members. In fact, MELVIN POLAND, DUANE THOMAS, and CHUCK WILSON are circling Saturn for the sixth time in eight years. It seems that they were out joy riding when they were pulled into Saturn's gravitational field and now they can't get themselves out ot it. Who knows, though, maybe they're all up in air about nothing. Of course you'll remember BOB CRAIG. Well, he now has his own talk show, oddly enough called THE BOB CRAIG TALK SHOW. Recently, Bob interviewed our own BEVERLY NELSON who has just won a solid gold record for her appearance in the hit opera, El Beavero. During that very same show, a commercial ran advertising new squeezy, snuggly, soothing, silky, soft flannel pajamas with feet, from BELINDA KASSELDER'S own pajama factory called B.J.'S. P.J's. Belinda's main selling point is the remote control, which comes with every set of her pajamas. In the science world, MARGIE TRYTHALL has recently won the Nobel Prize for living six years underwater with the Loch Ness Monster. Margie reports that she's still ironing, trying to get the wrinkles out of her skin. CHRISTINE LANDKAMER has discovered the 106th element, which has been named Landkamerium, in her honor. Chris isn't sure just what it does, but ever since she started working with it, she's never had to blow her nose, and that was 17 years ago. From our great class there have also sprung several distinguished business people. TROY BRAND has his own construction company which specializes in custom-made bird houses. These outdoor delights come with shag carpet, a sun porch, and pre-shredded nest. JIM WEHLING is a famous architect in Crickashaw, Missouri. His most outstanding work is a high-rise marble outdoor water closet, in beautiful downtown Crickashaw. ANN BURKE is an executive vice-president of Sak's Fifth Avenue. Ann is in public relations which demands a lot of nightly entertainment for out-of-town buyers. JONI SLOGGETT has developed a new line of stilts which is presently sweeping the country's toy markets. Recently as a publicity stunt, Joni stilted from coast to coast on a non-stop 118 hour walkathon. We won't be seeing Joni for a while, as she couldn’t get off her stilts, and is now heading for the tip of South America. DEBBIE ELLINGSON and SANDY DUCKER now own a chain of beauty farms in West Virginia. Sandy's philosophy for beauty is running ten miles early every morning, while Debbie advocates staying in bed 'til noon. As a compromise they get up at nine every morning and ride five miles on a bicycle built for two. CONNIE MOGENSON owns and operates a large rest home in Wyoming called MOGITS FOGIE S. LOUELLA Me FALL is atop fashion designer. She is presently in the heart of Africa where she is dressing formerly nude African tribes in her latest creations. Lou writes that Black is Beautiful. SHELLEY HUTT has developed a new line of slightly padded panty hose called LITTLEPRUDE Thesepanty hose are guaranteed not to run in 24 years, and can be stored in a thimble. NEIL POWELL and GREG BELL have gone into manufacturing for themselves. Perhaps you've heard of their camera company - BELL POWELL. ESTHER JOHNSON has found time for a few simple hobbies, besides taking care of her children. Between washing dishes and making beds, she's written an analysis of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, refuted Newton’s Law of Gravity, developed a new strain of moss for electronic Fishbowls, and designed a leopard-lined pup tent for Christian Dior. Esther writes that she needs something to do with her hands and might take up knitting. JAMES HARTMAN is still on top of Mt. Everest and refuses to come down, even after five years of solitude. Rumor has it that he's growing out his beard 'til it's long enough to reach the ground and he can shinny down it, that is if he has any shinny left. DIANNE COSNER lives in Winnywampus, Maine where she is desperately trying to organize a hippy cult. Dianne reports that all is well but she is still looking for another Cos in life. MARY ILLINGSWORTH is up the creek, so to speak. Mary works for the Nabisco Cracker Co., and is floating up the St. Lawrence Seaway this very moment on a raft made of saltines to prove just how crisp they stay, even under the dampest conditions. Nurse CAROLYN BREWER has received the Clara Barton award for her outstanding bedside manner above and beyond the call of duty. JIM RICHARDSON is the proud father of five girls - but when he does work, he gives aspirin seminars to nudist colonies. Perhaps you've heard of him - THE BAYER MAN. Unfortunately, we have nothing to report from PATTI FARRITOR, for the very night of our graduation, funny little men in white coats came and took her away, as she whispered repeatedly, We're Seniors now, we're Seniors now ... JACKIE RITENOUR is now chief assistant to Betty Crocker. In fact, it was our own Jackie who invented that new'best-selling cake mix, BANANA MUSH. We last heard from SCOTT PETERSON through missionaries returning from New Guinea, where Scott is coaching the P.P.W.B.B.T. or the Professional Pygmy Women's Basketball Team. So far this season, they've only been beaten by the U.B.B.B.T. or the Unbeatable Bushwomen's Basketball Team. Don’t feel bad Scott, everybody loses to them. KIM OWENS is now playing in a soap opera, Love of Money. Kim plays the part of a bank embezzler, who is in love with four out of Five of the lady bank tellers. What that kid won't do for money. KIM KELL Y is now playing Santa Claus in a large department store at Christmas. He can also be seen as the GREAT PUMPKIN on Halloween, an Elf on St. Patrick's Day, a kissy doll on Valentine's Day, and the Easter Bunny. Needless to say, Mr. Cupl, DEBBY HAGMAN is always nearby with her handy thread and needle and other little tidbits. STEVE GOEDEN is a Senate floor leader. Every night from six to seven, Steve can be seen with his handy mop and bucket. Speaking of soapy Steves - STEVE MARTIN has his own topless bar in Dunning; in fact, Steve is just getting out of the hospital where he is being treated for a bad case of overexposure. KAREN GRAY is designing Allis-Chalmer's calendars in Detroit. In her spare time, her family of six keeps her busy baking Girl Scout cookies, building tree houses, hanging from her knees, and lots of other fun-filled activities. JANET BEHRENDS has revived the television show THE WILD WILD WEST, where she plays the part of a 36 Chinese laundrywoman turned cowgirl. Janet played the role so convincingly that she won the B.S. award for best side saddle. ROGER ELLIS is now working in a zoo, but poor Roger seems to be on the wrong side of the bars. While working on his thesis, he went to study the Orangutang of Wonga-Wonga Wooland. For 3 long years Roger lived among them and would probably still be there if big game hunters hadn't rescued him. Now all he wants to do is eat bananas and swing from vines all day long. LORINA LEWIS has a Japanese Catering service with headquarters in Dunning. With the food comes chopsticks, pillows for the floor, Chinese lanterns filled with fire flies and Lorina in a kimono. Her assistant, LINDA TROTTER, has also learned a few genuine Oriental dances which she does barefoot over live coals. GORDON JONES moved to France after graduation and has since built the world's largest stockyards in downtown Paris; in fact, just 2 blocks south of the Eiffel Tower. DEAN McCASLIN, his partner, has learned to whistle in French while herding the cattle through the pens. RODNEY PETERSON is a chauffeur for Mae West in Beverly Hills. Rodney writes that Mae is a long way from being over the hill. DEBBIE CLAY has her own grape vineyard in Mexico City. Debbie preaches the barefoot squish method for refining her grapes before they get to the bottle or before she gets to the bottle, whatever comes first. JERRY SHEA lives in Hawaii and collects coconut shells which he hollows out and turns into out-of-season Jack-O-Lanterns. You know those tourists - they'll buy anything! EUGENIA MARTIN is a scuba diver with her Master’s in voice. Presently, she is singing for underwater weddings, etc. Eugenia writes that the other day a porpoise floated by during a ceremony and joined in with her in the chorus of O Promise Me. She'd never had so many compliments and she is now swimming all over trying to find him and persuade him to join the act. DEBBIE MATTOX lives in Chicago and manages a pent house which has been raided seven times. Debbie says if she ever catches her breath she’ll tell us why. ROD ARMSTRONG is helping with the football program at the Air Force Academy. All the players trust and rely on Rodney as he has never had his water bucket empty in all of the 14 years of being a waterboy. MARLENE RYAN and CHERYL SCHMIDT have developed a new doll which sleeps late in the morning, plucks her eyebrows, and has pierced ears. VERLA HYATT is a hot lunch cook in Tahiti. DAN KEMP is an understudy to Hugh Hefner; he is often seen escorting playmates' mothers, aunts, grandmothers, etc. JANET GO EDEN is a tourist guide through the catacombs, but she and her group got lost last week and hasn’t been heard of since. TERRI HYDE is an M.D. and has a practice with a certain Dr. Jekyl. MILLARD HOLMES is a game warden, and is lobbying for the preservation of the Mallard Duck. KIM McMILLAN is head bookkeeper in Macy's Department store and gets along great if she could only remember what an asset was. DeANN DRUERY is training sprinters for the summer Olympic games. SPORT'S ILLUSTRATED said that DeAnn has the most unusual style ever seen by human eyes. JIM SHELSOURN has revived the Wednesday night prayer meeting and has been hailed as the second Billy Graham by Christians around the world. CLAUDIA HALL is touring the country with a ballet troup but hasn't been on stage for 6 weeks, as she is suffering from Hungarian Toe-Nail Virus. Of course, the pride of the class is VIVIAN ASH who was a big hit on Broadway. Vivian had so many Emmies that she bought the Tumbleweed Cafe just to store them in. DWAINE BRYNER owns a wig salon for men on the West Coast called Dwaine's Delightful Don’t Tells. DALE CLAY and STANLEY COLLINS are searching ancient volcanoes in Washington for the remains of once live sacrifices. Let's hope now, that neither of them blow their stacks. CAROL TALBOT is a computer operator in Omaha and once ran herself through the computer and had to have her skin dyed to cover up the ink. BARBARA McCULLOUGH is teaching math at Kearney State where she first introduced her new numbers system based only on zeroes. JERRY MAYO has a mansion in Boston beside the McDonald Company of which he is president. Unfortunately, things got mixed up and he's had to make a drastic adjustment from dresses and fur coats to hamburger and french fries. SHELLEY ROYLE lives in Mason City, and is the proud mother of their football team, pep club, and band. DEB CARPENTER has written the new best seller, PERSONS WHO NEED PERSONS. LYLE COLEMAN has a five million acre reindeer farm in northern Utah, which specializes in lead reindeer. NANCY BAKER is teaching at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. Nancy got a little too carried away the other day while playing Dizzy Fingers and got arrested for assault with intent to do bodily harm. R. J. CROGHAN and STEVE HROMAS were last heard of when they volunteered to guide a group of Senior Girl Scouts deep into Halsey Forest. We can only assume that all is well, for the ranger, our own La VERNE SCHROEDER doesn't report any unusual sounds or smouldering fires. KAREN KAPS is a high fashion model in Paris and appeared on the cover of last month’s SCIENCE FICTION. Her hairdresser, BETH HORN, is the official bell ringer at the Notre Dame Cathedral, on every other Sunday when it rains over six inches. VERLANE KLEEB and DIANNA KENNEDY run a day care center in Wichita, Kansas for the unemployed bachelors' over 22. DIANNE LEIGH designs and manufactures hanging light fixtures in the formation of lily pads. They come in all colors, but of course, the most popular is ice blue, the color of Dianne's eyes. SANDY RICE set out on a world tour, but during her visit to China, she was vigorously attacked by Chinese men. Word has it that she's now hiding out in a rice paddy, where she blends in quite well. MIKE ROBISON is a cab-driver in Sargent, 24 hours a day and also, he has an amateur detective agency called ROBE'S PROBES. JULIE DOTY, DOUG STEWART, and RICK SPANEL are still floating down the Rio Grande playing their band instruments. People on the river, fondly call them the Rio Trio. RON PRICE is a member of the Hell's Angels, but he is on two month probation for losing his leather jacket. MIKE WHITESEL has reached the million dollar mark by selling Avon products. I hear he is trying for a promotion, but personally, I think he should quit while he’s a head. Well, Mr. Cupl, that only leaves me, and I live in Hastings and teach music at the college. Even though miles separate us, our minds are forever linked with the memories of the great class of 72. Once a year . a break. Away from the blue-jean social world. Away from the barren dance hall walls. Fantastic decorations are set off by foggy lights and the hush is momentarily broken by splashing water. Moods and reactions are as varied and numerous as the individuals bearing them. But PROM 1971 can be agreed upon in one aspect - the memories. Our school years are made of them - strengthened and affected by tears and laughter and friendship. Prom. ALUMNI ALMA MATER In the state is Custer County With its hills and valleys fair to see; There rules the queen of all the prairie, In sovereign majesty. CHORUS: Both purity and strength her colors, Blazen forth upon her banner bright We'll honor them, and love forever Our glorious Red and White. CHORUS: Then hail to thee our Alma Mater, Hail our high school ever true and strong. Accept as gifts upon thy altar The tribute of our song. CHORUS: Broken Bow, Broken Bow, She's the greatest high of any that I know, Always pressing onward may her glory ever grow Our honored Alma Mater, Broken Bow, Heigh-O. CHEER, CHEER Cheer, cheer for B.B.H.S. To us the fame will never grow less. Send her praises up on high. Shake down the thunder from the sky. Although the odds be great, or be small, Ole B.B. High will win over all, As her loyal sons go marching onward to victory. 1890 Willis Talbot 1891 Eva Weimer Cora Crawford Sarah Snyder 1892 Edwim Wilkinson Stella Brown 1893 Roy Wirt Murtle Chapel Sadie Whitehead Ross Pickett 1894 Verdae Thorpe Etta Richardson Minnie Sigler Minnie Amsberry Kate Dolley James Adamson John Lewis Joe Rice Walter Waters 1895 Mae Klump LeLan Holcomb Cora Barren Robert Lockhart Jesse Wilson Iva Adams 1896 Kate Weimer Charles Luce Maude Kem Elton Palmer Chesney Thompson Charles Shinn Grace Hurlbut Arthur Doman Pearle Hunter Mila Luce Glen Adams Clinton Hewitt Maude Hunter Avalo Vannice Monroe Spence Blanch Wiltamuth 1897 Maude Potts Madge Potts Claude Pickett Ernest McWilliams Dean Holcomb Amy Amsberry Gertie Orr Fannie Lowe Minnie Steinman Linda Spacht Nannie Talbot Leslie McWilliams Linda Kem Ray Wright Ray Koon 1898 Maude Farrell Fay Thorpe Lee Picket 1899 Nannie Barrett Irene Reynolds Lena Caywood Madge Kay Winifred Joyner 1900 Fannie Drake Orva Keelin Edwin Myers Essis Holcomb Mae Jacobs Roscoe Baldwin Mary Conley Nellie Drake Margaret Orr Emma Luce Flo Thorpe Irma Shinn Libbie Brenizer Arthur Myers Elizabeth Bell Guy Livermore 1901 Lois Chaplin Bessie Murray Clark Waters Lena Moore Ray Armour Nellie McIntosh 1902 Clyde Wilson Sarah Owen Harry Osborne Janie Stockam Paul Haumont 1903 Millicent Orr Kate Taylor Ollie Pickett Don Wilson Paul Humphrey Will McCandless Edith Lomax Clara Jeffords Nell Gutterson Ed Osborne Fred Skillman Charles Windnagle X. It is not the act of watching anymore - it's the act of doing. For the first time, we are making it happen. And any time one word has enough power to completely fill an auditori- um with faces bearing anticipation, hope and or glory, it deserves to be looked into. The word GRADUATION is most correctly defined as the act of conferring a degree. But its real depth is much too complex to ever be printed in elementary black and white. To properly project the true meaning of the word would require many colors - some possibly never imagined; such as the questionable hue or tone quality of emotions, laughter and friendship. For the Class of 1972, our memories stretch back to those golden days of vi- tally important problems - namely clothes, cokes, and members of the opposite sex. Our sophomore year became a little shaky as we realized for the first time that we were all individuals. But being juniors we found ourselves being bound together by class rings and prom. Funny things was, by the time our senior year rolled around, those particular bonds long gone - we still stood together, this time more strongly, with trust and companionship. As we move together for the last time one distinction from all other classes - past or future - stands above the rest. If nothing else - WE are now. - Shelly Hutt ADVERTISERS EXPERT PHOTOGRAPHY FOR ANY OCCASION Natural Color, Black White, Oils Cameras, Film Kodak Processing Picture Frames — Photos Copied BAKER STUDIO BOB and BEVERLY FITZPATRICK North Side Of Square — Broken Bow, Nebr. Mr. Gerrit Hamblin, a former science teacher, identified them as YRGOMS. When asked why he was certain they were Yrgoras, Mr. Hamblin replied, You can always recognize an Yrgom by the 60-oyole AC hum it produces Otherwise, they are invisible because of an envelope of neutral eleotrioity surrounding each one, To verify this, this staff member conferred with the personnel of the Physical Sciences Department. There it was thought that perhaps what Mr. Hamblin heard in the hallway as he passed down it was an overload in the overhead wiring when Kfc. Blaokburn shartcircuited his projector. The department's feeling is that if YTgoms do exist, and they should become a part of the student body, they should be quartered elsewhere in the building and not in or near the laboratory. We are short of closet space as it is, and would hate to give up our only store—room to these creatures. You know . . . BOYS , GIRLS , YRGOMS ... With the changing times, another school year is brought to a close. Seniors will pass through these halls for the last time, recalling their first days as sophomores, their hectic junior year, and final senior activities. Underclassmen view the coming year with anticipation of memorable events, I would like to thank Mr. Joe Cupl, our advisor, Beverly Baker Studio, The Grand Island Independent, The Custer County Chief, Raymond Photography, Jack Bailey Studio, Willson Studio and Camera Shop, Paul Bader Studio, National School Studios, Inc., Taylor Publishing Company, and the Broken Bow merchants for their interest and assistance throughout the year. I would also like to thank Mrs. Delores Hendrickson for handling our finances, Mr. Eric Otte for assisting with the photography, and Mrs. Pat Russell for donating personal photos. The members of the annual staff are also to be commended for unselfishly devoting time and interest to make this publication of the WARRIOR possible. In our ever changing world, we are constantly faced with new challenges as we accept the responsibilities of the times. We hope that through the pages of the 1972 yearbook, we have captured the spirit of Broken Bow High School and its students.
