Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1971 volume:

We stand by yesterday's shadow and wonder at tomorrow; building each new dream in crowds and silence, in darkness and the light of day. We flounder and grasp and laugh and weep, each knowing feelings untouched by words. So we shall find ourselves in each new day and at last the answers lie somewhere at the bottom of the day. Rod McKuen As the doors of education open, a new part of your life begins. This is filled with achievements, moments of felicity, trials, and tribulations, friendships, and participation in various school activities. We the Senior Class of 1971 hope that this volume of the WARRIOR may preserve the fond memories for many many years to come. If our goal is fulfilled to a small degree we shall consider our task accomplished. Thus the WARRIOR. . . 2 Editor- ANN GOVIER ADMINISTRATION FRESHMEN ORGANIZATIONS ADVERTISING DEDICATION We, the Warrior Staff of 1971 are proud to dedicate this annual to the Broken Bow School’s Music Department. This department which consists of two sections, band and choir, plays a very important and essential part in making the Broken Bow school system one of the finest in the nation. Beverly Baker The choir under the direction of Mr. Gary Dobbins is very active. During the course of the year it presents many excellent concerts which usually include both classical and popular songs. Each year the choir like the band participates in the District Music Contest. It has in the past years brought back many excellent ratings from this contest. The choir has for several years put on a musical production for the community such as LIL’ ABNER, and BYE BYE BIRDIE. These productions have turned out very well, and brought in many favorable comments from the community. 4 Beverly Baker The band under the direction of Mr. Stanley Johnson is also a very active organization. In past years it has participated in many contests and has received many trophies for its excellence. A few of these contests include the Harvest of Harmony in Grand Island, the Pershing Marching Contest in Lincoln, Band Day also in Lincoln, and the District Music Contest, which takes place in early spring. Besides contests the band puts on many concerts and football half-time shows. It also helps keep school enthusiasm by playing spirited songs at other games and rallies. 5 ALMA MATER In the state is Custer County With its hills and valleys fair to see; There rules the queen of all the prairie, In sovereign majesty. CHORUS: Both purity and strength her colors, Blazen forth upon her banner bright We’ll honor them, and love forever Our glorious Red and White. CHORUS: Beverly Baker Then hail to thee our Alma Mater, Hail our high school ever true and strong, Accept as gifts upon thy altar The tribute of our song. Broken Bow, Broken Bow, She's the greatest high of any that I know, Always pressing onward may her glory ever grow Our honored Alma Mater, Broken Bow, Heigh-O. 6 ADMINISTRATION MR MILLER SAYS: Building a Life The task of building a life is the biggest and most important assignment you have on earth. If you do your task well, you will find it the most satisfying and rewarding thing. The building of your life began when you were born and will end when you die. Your home, school, church and community have given you a great deal of help and will continue to help you. The greatest responsibility from now on, however, is yours. The four main cornerstones you will need in your building are: Character, Health, Personality and Knowledge. You will need other building stones, too. Spiritual stones, useful and satisfying recreation, love of God and fellow man, and worship, if you arc to build the kind of life with which you will be happy and satisfied. Your home, school, church and community are expecting you to build this kind of life. Congratulations and best wishes to each of you now and in the years ahead. Sincerely, 8 MR American Education One of the greatest needs of the public schools today is to have their story told to the American people. Education is dynamic; its story is everchanging. Your 1971 annual serves a very important function in telling the story of our school to the patrons of the community. Many people will look at and enjoy your annual. They will better understand our school and its function in the community. I would like to congratulate the annual staff on its production of this excellent annual. The administration and the faculty wish to express our appreciation for all the time and effort put forth by the annual staff. Your labors will long be appreciated. Sincerely, 5 WADE SAYS: 9 1970-1971 SCHOOL BOARD Standing (1. to r.): Royce Ferguson - President, Dr. Alanson Jones - Board Member, Charles Giles - Treasurer, Seated: Bob Books - Board Member, Naomi Armstrong - Vice President, Dr. Fred Kottmeyer - Secretary. NORMA YANTZIE IT CAME TO PASS - by Fred. . . It was in the twelfth year of the reign of Emperor Miller, that the Nation of Seventy-one invaded the sacred portals of Broken Bow High School. Five score and ten strong, led by Patriarchs Nierstheimer, Huston, Albin and emissaries Richardson and Shea, they brought witli them many new traditions and ideas. They prospered in this new land, and it was good. There went a decree out of the same Emperor Miller, that the nation of Seventy-one was to move to a new temple. The exodus, led by Triarchs Hyslop, Adams, and Dickey, took place in the eleventh month of the second year. Chief diplomats were Bernhardt, Hiser, Huston, and Shea. Lo and behold, the third year of their occupation was upon them! Shea was presented unto the multitude as the High Priest of the temple. Govier, Davis, and Burnett were deigned as his underlings. Adams, Albin, Huston, Hyslop, Kingston, and Richardson were placed on the council of the elders. Decimated in numbers, they sought to make themselves known. Eleven of their number were cast into the den of lions, to survive unscathed in front of the unbelievers.1 The spring festival proved to be the greatest of all the land. Their treasury was depleted; their storage bins empty. But in their hearts they were happy, and their cup was filled to overflowing. It came to pass that the Nation of Seventy-one grew in stature amongst their peers. For three years they had labored; it was in their fourth year they reaped. Honor, glory, and riches were heaped upon them. Truly they had earned them. From their midst, Mayo was appointed Procurator. Atkisson ruled as Pharisee; Stewart as Scribe. Rabbis were Huston, Albin, and Richardson. Minor priests were Davis, Dickey, Grady, Hirsch, Scofield, and Smith. Wisely did they rule over this great nation, this Nation of Seventy-one. Great was their fame on the battlefield, the mighty Warriors of Seventy-one defeated the barbar- ians that laid siege to the temple. Ten of their number were offered up as a sacrifice to all nations. It was accepted with acclaim. Then, the Prophet Wade descended upon them, and said, Many are the blessings that have been bestowed on you. Use them wisely and you shall not forfeit them. Thus, the Nation of Seventy-one was sent forth unto new lands, new worlds in which to conquer. s E N I 0 R H 1 S T O R Y 1 Junior Class Play 2 Prom 3 Senior Play Those students from South Side attending Kindergarten through 12th grade in Broken Bow. . . pedire in mis oraciones que Dios ponga siempre sus ojos in ti, iluminando tus caminos para el Bien, el Progreso y la Pas. - What can I say about this country? I can say many wonderful tilings, but really, the letters of the alphabet are not sufficient to express all, although the sentiments that I have of the inhabitants will I guard like a precious treasure all through my life. When 1 arrived in the United States 1 had one vague impression of loneliness, and all that I saw was strange and different from my country. But. . .has it had a mysterious change over my inner feelings? I don't know that, however, 1 do know that here I have another family with whom I share the happy and sad moments and above all from whom I learned good and interesting things that will provide for my future life. Really this nation has received me with open arms from the first moment and has given me a great word of welcome and more in Broken Bow, where I’ve felt the kindness and affection of all those who helped me, especially, teachers, friends, and fellow students for whom 1 feel a profound love and I will never forget them for it. Thank you Broken Bow, thank you for the new experiences I have received, thank you for accepting me with much love and above all for the help you have given me, and for all this. . . I will share in my prayers that God will look upon you, shining your pathways, for the Good, the Progress, and the Peace. 116 Maria Elizabeth Eisenberg (Petty) ATHLETICS THE 1970 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM DAN KEMP, JIM SHELBOURN, MARK SMITH, TOM CHRISTENSEN, CHAD HUSTON, ROGER ELLIS, COACH JIM MILLS. 1970 STATE CHAMPS” CUSTER COUNTY CHIEF PHOTO CHRISTENSEN out ahead in a dual with Lexington. It served as a high school until the student body outgrew its size. When the new senior high building was constructed in 1938 next to it, the older one was converted for junior high purposes. The old building was razed during the summer of 1970. With it went scores of carved initials and memories. To you. Grand Old Lady, we bid a fond adieu! — Photos by Mr. John Sweenie 214 215
