FOREWORD We, the Senior Class, are proud to present to you our 1964 WARRIOR. This book has caught glimpses here and there, so that in years to come the activities of this school year at Broken Bow High will not be dimmed and fade from memory. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of '64 we shall be content, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. Gretchen Koefoot Janice Wiebusch CO-EDITORS DEDICATION They have understood our problems, assisted us with patience, listened to our complaints with a smile, inspired us with confidence, encouraged us when we were disheartened, and enhanced our chance for success. Their determined effort to make us successful and happy shall always be remembered as one of our most precious high school memories. Words can't express our appreciation for their various contributions; but to show how much we love, honor, and respect them, the 1964 Senior Class dedicates the '64 WARRIOR to the parents of the Senior Class. i ii UlTliwi 1 ADMINISTRATION OUR SCHOOL Seated at board table: Seldon Wenquist, Dr. Howard Stevens, Roy Fauquet, Dr. Ralph Blair, BOARD Willard Keller, and Tedd Huston. If I could wave a magic wand and bring to each of you students in the Broken Bow Junior-Senior High School, the most important and useful gift the world has to offer; it would be to develop a Love to own and read good books. Books are boats loaded with cargo of ideas, the most valuable goods and vital wealth of the world today. Books are the throbbing brains and ideas of thinkers both living and dead. The habit of intelligent reading each day makes life fuller, richer, happier and more useful to you and to others. I would challenge each of you to try it now and in the years ahead. Sincerely, OUR SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Always busy, always interested, Mr. Miller keeps Broken Bow High School operating smoothly and efficiently. His friendly relationship with the students promotes greater school spirit. Holding the position of principal of BBHS for nine years, Mr. Keith L. Wade is a shining example of school spirit. OUR PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Congratulations to the Annual Staff and Mr. Cupl on your very fine yearbook. I am sure that you and your classmates will enjoy your annual for many years to come. To this edifice eventually came an innocent and wide-eyed group of adolescents. They were here to learn of the earth wonders and their guide was the dulcet-voiced Virgil Korte. Youth leaders were: president, Janice Wiebusch; vice-president, Bob Elliott; and scribe, Dorothy Wenquist. At the council fires were Steve Brown and Jean Scritsmier. So passed the winter of the timid. In the autumn, seventy-eight sturdy youths returned to these mysterious double doors. Fun and games were coached by the mighty Duane Freeman. Steve Brown led the pack, assisted by Dennis Towns and Paul Petersen. Student representatives were Bob Elliott and Connie Jacquot. This was the year of the first March of Dimes and Homecoming wins. The epoch as Juniors began too soon for some, for a few of the wise realized that the days of youth were numbered. Joe Johnson was Fearless Leader, under the tutelage of noble John L. Sweenie. Wise ones were Connie Jacquot, Elizabeth Christen, and Gretchen Koefoot. Learned senators, Carol Clark and John Ayers, spoke in the Student Council chambers. Time marched swiftly, with the occurence of the Junior play, and the day of County Government, and the Alpine prom. Reeking with self-confidence, this distinguished class initiated a final year. Head man Bob Elliott was ably assisted by Judy Lowder, Carol Clark, and Kay Gottschalk. Elected assemblymen were Floyd Carpenter and Elizabeth Christen. Sponsoring the group was scientist Joe Cupl, Jr. On May 27, in the hall adorned with blue and white and banked with white orchids, the noted class was graduated. A murmur swelled to a roar, The door to Success is labeled 'Push'. May Dame Fortune deign to smile on the Class of 1964! 1964 FINALISTS SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY And now, ladies and gentlemen, the Warrior Staff presents the Show of the Week, starring the world-famous Class of 1964 from Broken Bow, Nebraska. Tonight, we will first introduce the artistic element in this notorious group. May I present the bright new star of Son of Cuddles'' -- Miss Judy Lowder? Her escort is Dick Taylor, whose singing debut at the Met was one of the musical events of the year. TV-wise, here are Vicki Palmer and Doris Moninger! Cavalry; Dennis Eacker works as a driving instructor for the state highway patrol department. Dale Hill recently bought and remodeled a Sargent dance hall, formerly known as Oscar's Palladium. The owner manager of the Scritsmier Hog Farms, Inc. is Miss Jean Marie. Now completing his ninth volume of The Life of Sigmund Freud is psychiatrist Matt Varney. Linda Craig was unable to be here tonight, however, as she is now managing a mission in her adopted country, Liberia. Kay Gottschalk operates a string of Humpty Dumpty children's stores. Also unable to attend is Floyd Carpenter -- who will go down in history as the man who carved the world's most unsuccessful rocket (from white pine). Dan Cunningham is in the hospital in traction after the ninth tragic crackup of his Ford. Oh, and here is Floyd Koch, with a word from Gamble’s! Programming will resume in 23 seconds. Leading agronomists in the group include Farmer of the Year, George Briggs; Young Homemaker of the Year, Sharon Chipps; and Dogbreeder of the Year, Dennis James. The Lady with the Hypodermic is nurse Nancy Hinze's nickname. Hazel Vollmer became an IBM computor-operator. Leila Winbolt bought a chain of super-markets last week. Finally, this group includes many shining lights of service. Cheryl Briggs, in her work for the WCTU, has earned the gratitude of all as the Modern-day Carrie Nation. Carol Clark has produced much outstanding literature for children. Organizationally, Kay Connely plans to build up 4-H groups on the moon, Liane Crawford heads the U. S. Girl Scouts, Judy Estes is president-elect of the HOMEMAKERS-OF-AMERICA-RIGHT-NOW. Bob Elliott is the nation's leading rodeo performer. MARCHING BAND FAIR, 1963 MR. RUSSELL: Coach Russell did an outstanding job this year as a BBHS football, wrestling, and track coach. In football, he had a good six wins and three losses record. Mr. Russell finally scored over a hundred victories as a coach at BBHS. In wrestling, the defeats outnumbered the victories, but there is promise of many good wrestlers in the future. Coach Russell is head coach of the track squad. MR. HULSEBUS: As head coach of the basketball squad, Coach Hulsebus did a good job of bringing on the Indian team in the second half of the season. Eleven letter men returned this year and the Indians had a fair season. Mr. Hulsebus did a marvelous job with the line as assistant football coach and was a great help to the track team this spring. MR. KORTE: Coach Korte is assistant coach in football, basketball, and track. He has helped a great deal in forming good teams in all three sports. Mr. Korte coached both reserve teams in football and basketball and had good records with both. He has done a tremendous job at BBHS.
