Track-1, Football-2, Junior Class Play-3, F F A.-1,2,3,4 Class History It was in the year nineteen hundred and forty-four, in the month of September, that four and eighty aspiring juveniles presented themselves at the portals of Broken Bow High School. All unsuspecting, B. B. H. S. opened their arms and admitted them to their fold. They comprised the freshman class of 1944-45. Sponsoring this class were Miss Wright and Mr. Journey. Executive duties were carried by president, Ken Eacker; vice president, loan Wurzbacker; secretary-treasurer, Dorothy Reed; and sergeant-at-arms, Ruth Miller. Being freshmen seemed to have absorbed all our attention, for it seems that we did not engage in any social activities until the last day of school when a class picnic was enjoyed at Devil's Gap. September of 1945 found this same group, still green but hopeful, enrolled as sophomores. As a diversion from dissecting and solving theorems, we held a class dance in the old gymnasium. This was the year in which we served at the Junior-Senior Banquet. The boys portrayed Arabian waiters and performed sword dances. As a result of many stirring campaign speeches, our class officers were president, Florence Wooters; vice president, Lyla Books; secretary-treasurer, Lois Vose; and sergeant-at-arms, Charles Talbot. Our sponsor was Miss Foy. Our junior year was filled with activities with one objective, the Junior-Senior Banquet. The football season was highlighted for the juniors by the inevitable class meetings on Friday nights which always concluded with the drafting of vendors for cokes, Candy bars, apples, and doughnuts. At Christmas time we presented an entertaining play, Growing Pains. This play was under the capable direction of Mrs. Miller. Our efforts, and those of our mothers who were drafted as chefs, were rewarded by a very successful banquet in the spring, carrying out a gay-nineties theme. The year was wound up by a class picnic at New Helena. Directing all these activities were our president, Bernard Bendow-sky; vice president, Ed Kenoyer; secretary-treasurer, Joan Russell; and our sponsor, Mr. Adams. At last the enviable position was reached. We were seniors . . . With our membership decreased to sixty-four, we set forth on our final year in B. B. H. S. Our class activities have included making plans for commencement, ordering announcements and pictures, and editing the annual which is under the guidance of Mr. Adams. Representatives of our class are president, Lyla Books; vice president, Ben Heskett; secretary-treasurer, Paul Province. Our sponsor is Mr. Adams. And with commencement we set our feet on the paths toward the new worlds we have long dreamed of conquering, but no matter how far these paths may lead us, the memories of Broken Bow High School and associations with our classmates will always be with us. Page 18 Class Prophecy The year 1963 and once again the Senior Class of '48 have entered the well-known portals of Broken Bow High School. As our eyes wonder over this quiet and dignified group of persons present, our eyes first fall upon Dr. Paul Carothers and Republican candidate for the senate Dick Cox quietly discussing politics. We also find present at this great event ranchers Bill Teahon and Ed Gracey, partners of the Lazy U Ranch . The industrious cowpokes employed at the Lazy U Ranch are none other than Dean Horn, Bob Hall, and Ward Fair. A few miles down the paved highway we find the Dapper Dude Ranch owned by Carol McGraw with her foreman, John Taylor. Models Evelyn Teahon and Ruby Parker have just hurried in, dressed in the latest styles from Peggy Simonson's Style Shoppe, The Wonder Wear . Not to be out-done in that newest look , the Shea Department Store, with models Frances Sebesta and Doris Johnson are well represented here. Their magnificent coiffures are the exclusive styling of Marianna Chappell. Discussing some of their latest writings are poets Howard Longfellow Spencer and Charles Whitney Harriger. One of Howard's latest poems is Love's Latest Lyrics. Pilot Dean Martin just flew in with passenger, Lorene Cole, missionary from India. The stewardesses on this plane are Betty Dill and Wanda Myers. It was a long trip but 'hey couldn't miss seeing old classmates again. Kenny Eacker has been quite busy in Hollywood the past few years. Van Johnson has retired you know. Mrs. Lyle Bates, the former Bonnie Hodgin, and seven sons arrived from Lillian to be with old friends. Since leaving B.B.H.S. Bernard Bendowsky has put his soul into his work. Maybe the shoe business has much to do with that or maybe it's his private secretary, Nora Phillips. Driving the Beardsley Taxi Service, is Dor-win McCaslin with one of his regular passengers, Shirley Beardsley. D.A., Leroy Diz Moore with Sheriff Jack Nelson are busy keeping law and order in Broken Bow. These Indians keep getting on the war-path. As more guests arrive we find Band Leader Francis Adams and his Broken Bow Boomerangs with swoon crooner Bill Reneau to entertain us. They appear nightly at the 6666 Club owned by Ed Kenoyer and operated by Dean Wood. Oh yes, Edna Ingraham and Irene Griffith, both talented singers are with us. After several years in sailing the seven seas and tramping many a foreign shore. Marine Ben Heskett has returned to B.B. as the Burlington Hotel proprietor. One of his most elaborate rooms is reserved for engineer Charley Talbot, who has found the reconstruction of the Brooklyn Bridge a great problem. Some of Broken Bow's own prominent citizens, former members of the Class of '48 begin to arrive. Among them are Laverne Applegarth Page 20 and Leroy Collinson, owners of the Ever-Ready Radio Repair Shop. Conley Murray, now owner of the Murray Tourist Cabins, finds business very good. ft roar and the shrieking of brakes announces the arrival of the streamline Boston to Broken Bow bus with Richard Munnell behind the wheel. Stepping from the bus are those profitable farmers, Ted Vose, Bob El-lingson, Larry Hill and Irwin Hyatt. In the rear of the bus, sunk deep into the plush cushions, and taking his afternoon siesta is scientist Richard Relph. He has spent many a year in his laboratory studying the origin of the moth ball. Last, but not least, to step from the bus are nurses Anna Dubry and Florence Wooters. It was important that they came alongâin case of accident. Ramona Myers, Lois Vose, Bonnie Giles, Esther Murray and Donna Wood have retired from the teaching profession only to find that the teaching of their own a greater profession. Psychiatrist Vaughn Books has been keeping postman Doyle Davis busy toting her mail from her progressing patients. Business seems to be profitable in Broken Bow. County Superintendent Margaret Briggs with her assistants Vivian Masters and Doro- thy Anderson was accompanied by County Agent Russell Briggs and his secretary Dorothy Reed on their journey back to their old Alma Mater. Professor Bill Bruce is taking a vacation from his lectures on the Atomic Age to discuss important matters with Lawyer Paul Province and his secretary Twila Furrow. For other entertainment in B.B. we find Marlin Eberle, now owner of the Bow Theatre with career woman, Joan Russell as secretary. As some of our guests depart they drop in at the Cozy Comfy Coffee Shoppe, owned by Bob Coover and Ralph Beller, and are served many tasty dishes by Nadine Davis and Winifred Jones. As the sun slowly sinks behind the horizon and darkness closes in we find our Senior Class of '48 slowly departing from the old familiar surroundings. This being their first reunion for fifteen years has filled their hearts with pleasant memories of the by-gone days. After the last goodbyes are said and the sounds of departure have faded away, a quiet and secluded peace falls once more upon our old Alma Mater. I'agc 21 Last Will and Testament We, the Class of Forty-eight, of Broken Bow High School, city of Broken Bow, and State of Nebraska, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, in manner and form following. Dick Munnell, leave my horse and wagon; Vaughn Fish may be able to keep them longer than he has his car. We, Bill Teahon and Richard Squeaky Relph, leave our very tired Model A's to anyone willing to carry a sack of nuts and bolts at all times. We, Ward Fair and Jack Nelson, leave our box of broken testubes and other broken paraphernalia to Dale Van Wormer and Tom Templeton. Mum's the word, boys! I, Charles Talbot, leave my lease on the dark room in Chem. lab to anyone who will use it to the best advantage. I, Tex Doyle Davis, leave the management of the music department to Mr. Jacob. If you need any help, let me know. I, Dona Wood, leave my saxophone to Pauline Hicks, a high fluting Soph! I, Irene Griffith, leave my old spot in the choir to Lavonne Matheson. I, Carol McGraw, leave my boots and saddle to Cecel Olsen. I, Ruby Parker, leave my long dark eyelashes to Grace Huff. I, Shirley Beardsley, would leave my rides in a maroon cab but I want them myself. I, Vaughn Books leave my nickname of LULU forever! I, Florence Woofers, leave my Achin' back to Mr. Adams. Don't think it ain't been pleasant cause it ain't. I, Ed Gracey, leave my car, The Yellow Terrorâ, to the Smithsonian Institute as a relic; may it rest in pieces. I, Winifred Jones, leave my giggle to Ramona Holmes; don't let it get you down. I, Dorothy Anderson, would leave my dark hair and eyes if I didn't need them myself. I, Ben Haskett, leave Bernadine Roos to one year of old-maidhood. We do hereby make, constitute, and appoint Mr. Adams, to be our executor of this, our Last Will and Testament. Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the Class of 48 , as and for our Last Will and Testament, in the presence of us, who have hereunto subscribed our names, at their request, as witnesses thereunto, in the presence of said testators and of each other.
