STUDENT COUNCIL The success of many of the school activities this year was brought about largely through the efforts of the student council. Council members not only took part in most of the assemblies and parties, but also strove to bring about a feeling of unity and understanding between the faculty and student body. In our student council there are two representatives, a boy and a girl, from each of the three Senior high classes: Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. Presiding over these six, there is a President elected by the student body in the spring of the preceding year. One faculty member serves as Sponsor. Norma Jane Wallain was elected President last spring in the first all-school election under the new student council constitution. The following representatives were chosen in class meetings early in September: Thelma Moren and Dale Crowder, Seniors, Mary Connery and Jay Jennings, Juniors, Judy Lyle and Bill Lemon, Sopho- mores. Mr. Ted Best served as Sponsor. Student handbooks were presented by the student council to each student during the first week of school. These booklets contained information concerning the schooI's accrediting system, curriculum, and rules, it also listed subiects, activities, and important school events. Another proiect sponsored by the student council was Twirp Season, which was considered a successful social proiect by both the student body and the faculty. This season, which lasted from November 21 to 29, was a repetition, by popular request, of an idea first introduced at B.A.H.S. in the fall of 1951, a season during which the girls paid the expenses on all dates. The council had charge of scheduling and co-ordinating all assembly programs. Different members had charge of the opening exercises at each assembly also. ln charge of the bulletin board near the office this year, the versatile student council performed another worthwhile service for the school. A new bulletin board was presented to the school as a council project and was installed in a more convenient location. This bulletin board, equipped with a glass front and a lock, was a practical, as well as ornamental, addition to the high school hall. Members saw to it that all current news of importance was posted on the board and had posters made for special occasions. With a field trip to Central High School, Tulsa, Okla- homa, this spring to enable members to study the methods and proiects of a larger council, the Broken Arrow High School Student Council concluded its second year of operation-a year of great progress in democratic student government and service to the school. More than 2,000 spectators attended the all- school parade and said that it was one of the most interesting events of the year. Approxi- mately 1,350 paraders representing some fifty classes and organizations participated in the parade. The school awarded a total of S50 to the top seven floats. First prize went to the second grade for their float portraying Mother Goose and her famous characters. The story-book float of the third grade, won SENIOR HIGH HOMEMAKING second prize, with five third prizes going to the Junior class, the high school boys' and girls' home economics classes, the fourth grade, the Junior high girls' physical education group, and the first grade. Judges of the parade were: Mrs. H. C. Ander- son, Mrs. J. M. Hall, Mrs. W. J. Harmon, Mrs. Charles Regenhard, and Mrs. Albert Shanks. That same night the parents of the Junior high and Senior high school students attended open house at the high school campus, getting ac- quainted with the teachers. As this pOpUldr Club had forty members from the Junior and Senior classes alone in 1952 and forty-one members in 1953, it could not be opened to Sopho- mores either year. This year's officers were David Volz, President, Jerry Kates, Vice President, Joyce Whiteley, Secretary, Janice Hudson, Treas- urer, Margaret Wilson, Historian-Reporter, Vella Lou Friend, Li- brarian, and Jeffrey Williams and Barney Ramsey, Parliamen- tarians. Miss Barbara E, Clason was Sponsor for the second year. An early proiect of the year was the F.T.A. float in the Ameri- can Education Week Parade, contrasting old and new educational methods. Five grade school children were used and were super- vised by two club members most of the morning. F.T.A. members were asked to substitute several times during the year for regular teachers. Those substituting at the grade school included Marilyn Cotner, Margaret Wilson, Molly Holla- baugh, Dale Crowder, Maxine Norwood, Shirley Sherrell, and Alice Mahaffey. Joyce Whiteley substituted at Junior high. October 31, Mrs. Elmer Barnes accompanied Maxine Norwood, Jane Barnes, Jeffrey Williams, and LeRoy Lemon to the State F.T.A. meeting at Oklahoma City. A number of members attended the district F.T.A. meeting in Tulsa, March lb, where David Volz served as Vice-Chairman of the Northeastern District. Nearly all members attended the F.T.A. Day at Tulsa University on March 31. Fifteen members served at the Tulsa County Administrators' Dinner at Broken Arrow on January 26 and their service and work as a club was commended by that group of educators. F.T.A. representatives, Jane Barnes and Norma Wallain, also attended a faculty-parent meeting to learn about North Central Association accrediting for high schools. A constitution committee, with Jeffrey Williams as Chairman, drew up a new constitution for the F.T,A. Club this year. Those helping Jeff were Marilyn Cotner, Dale Crowder, and David Volz. Maxine Norwood and her merit point committee, consisting of Margaret Wilson, LeRoy Lemon, Marilyn Cotner, and Euvon Loyd, presented a merit system which was approved by the club and began a system of recording points for members who did substitute teaching and other work for the organization. Besides learning about teaching as a profession, the F.T.A. members felt that they had practical training in parliamentary procedure and opportunities for leadership and community service this year. FUTURE FARMERS of AMERICA The Future Farmers of America is a national or- ganization for farm boys studying Vocational Agri- culture. lts primary purpose is to develop agricultural leadership, citizenship, and co-operation. The organiza- tion's activities are closely correlated with the course of study formulated for vo- cational agriculture, so that the program as a whole will produce an individual educated in getting along with his fellow men as well as being educated in technical agriculture. Officers in the F.F.A. this year were Bill Ralston, President, G. C. Sturgeon, Vice President, Dearl Watson, Secretary, Bob Winingham, Treasurer, Harold Poplin, Reporter, Mr Kindell, Chapter Advisor.
