We were anxious to begin our school career, to climb the ladder of success, te build it rung by rung as we should com plete each year of school work. The first eight grades we finished eventfully--and unevent- fully. Finally, nfter eight years of work end olny We were Fresh- men. Eighty-nine of us stood on this, the 9th rung ef the led- der and felt very quiet. We Were high enough not thwt we could see the top and high enough that looking down made us dizzy---at leest our instructors snid we were. The next full we entered Broken Arrow High School as Seph- Cmerss. After, tend only efter,D our initiation we were full- fledged high schcel students. We were 'ell represented in the sports, band, glee club end various other activities. This year was closed with only the more rungs in our school ladder. As Juniors we were very prvud fer we hed the lergest class ln high school. Seen we began wrrk en the Junior Plwy, Nhystery nt M1dn1ght,U n bleed-curdling heir-rrlsing Tystery nlry inter- mingled with cemedy furnished by two drrky servents. Then months ef prcperrtion were cllmfxed by the Junlfr-Senicr QPHOUGt. On the good ship S. S. Jun-Sen, we entertrined the Seniors, our one time rivals. but then the best of shlpnrtes. September 7, 1957, We entered the deers ff High Scheol with P very jeyous feeling. We ferget that in cnly nine shcrt months we shfuld lefvc never sgnin to meet together. We Senicrs felt very breud when LP Verne Dnvls, our cendldrte fer ffftbfll queen Wes elected. Our play, Hdheerio, My Deeric Wes successful. And the nnnunl-ih the rnnunl! - mcnths of prepwretien end then-Grnd- urtion Week. Now, deer elrssmrtes our High Schfol lvdder is climbed,---We've Written nctes, studied lessens, hed parties vexed tenchers, end lived the life of hnnpy boys nnd girls. Unusual situations were found and characters that were too clever for words helped make the Senior play a success. Clocks and all time were stopped by Sophronia Spatchett play- ed by Reta Utley. Bob Bixler showed his acting ability as Lord Cuthbert Twillingham. June Robertson looked, as well as actedher nart as Sue Graham. Billy Chapman played the character of a man very much in love--Tommy Tarrant. Billie Kirk made a very digni- fied mother for Mary Ellen Kenslow, a spoiled heiress. They were known as Mrs. Johns and her perfectly priceless daughter. Dick Graham-Sue's husband was characterized by Ralph Moore. Jack Nai- feh was Gwenneth's UMan with a patch on his cheek,H the real Lord Twillingham. The two Lord Twillinghams were joined by a third. Only this one happened to be a girl--Cherry Holt, Sue's sister. Dickie Keener played this part. Roberta Plant and Jack Rawlings were a huge success as Melchezedek and Desdemona, two negros, to be married. A grand clima7X4was furnished by a gun shot intended for Melchisedek. A very pert French maid, Fifi-who loved toflirt with'zenm6n was very successfully played by Mary Louise Roberts. With these characters and this play there was no alternative but a nRipping Pip of a Play.n The proceeds were used to finance our Annual. JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET In the center of the Senior's garden of memories there'll be forever engraved a little old-fashioned garden which grew right ap down in the Grade-School Auditorium. In the Spring of the year, April 23, to be exact, the Juniors and their sponsor, Miss ?arkhurst, entertained the Seniors at the annual banquet. Enter- ing the garden under a trellised arohway, the guests found their wlaees by names upon very demure old-fashioned maids. And other old-fashioned maids served the food in a very modern Way. Acting as toastmaster was Joe Sehoggen. Geraldine Layton, the-'Hostess, was very gracious to all her guests. A few dance numbers, talks DY representatives of various groups, HA perfect dayu sung by everyone--that was all. Guests were the Seniors, the High School Faculty, and members of the School Board. The Junior-Senior Banquet for 1958 had pass- ed in to history and down the line with all the other events whi- ch make school life so dear to the heart of everyone connected -with it. - JUNIOR WEINER ROAST Fall-falling leaves, renewal of old acquaintances, October moons weiners, buns, pickles 'n onions, firetime, weiner--roast time--when the Juniors gave the Seniors a party one night two or three miles west of town. Cars were loaded and feet were blis- tered when everyone arrived safely at the big bonfire--some of the Juniors and Seniors began to become a little frightened when the rumor started that all the teachers were angry because there were supposed to have been no cars brought to this Weiner roast. Sut before many minutes their long abated breath was released and the fresh country air made everyone feel that everyone was nappy--and everyone was--Before the night was over everyone was so friendly that as many as sixteen rode in one car back to town. The Seniors certainly enjoyed this entertainment furnished by the Juniors and returned their gratitude with a hay ride. --.-Q-Q---.9---.---nc The Senior Play east was entertained by Dickie Keener and Mary Kenslow at Mary's hone after play practice one night. The season opened with the annual class tournament. Both the Senior boys and-girls defeated the Junior boys and girls in the finals for Champions for the second consecutive year. With the motto, nThe team that won't be beat epn't be beatf we were successful in downing Uniom in an easy game to open the season. Perhaps this victory was too much for us because we had to put up a tussle to tie the Keifer lassies in the first Conference game. We were successful in defeating Liberty, Bcrryhill, and Glenpool and then were nosed out by East Central Consolidated In the finals of the County Tournament. At the District meet we drew a bye in the first round, and afterde- feating Salina and the strong Oolagah team, we were again downed by East Central Consolidated in the final. This all sums to a grand total.of three ties, sixteen wins, and threelosses out of twenty-two games played. SPORTS NEWS The Football team of the Broken Arrow High School during the 1957 season broke a number of past School records and were one of the five undefeated major schools in the state of Oklaho- ma. It was the first time in the history of the school that this had occured. It was also class HBH State Champions for the first timeg Another accomplishment was that the Tigers defeated Haskell for the first time. The Team was North East Six Confer- ence Champs. The Team at the beginning of 1957 had only 8 returning lettermen and hopes for Conference Championships and State Champ were very lowg however when the Team lined up for the first game with East Central it had 4 inexperienced players on the teamg Glen Luther, Cecil Wilson, Charlie Wilson, and Ralph Moore. However the boys began to click and won 15 to O. As the season gradually went on the Tigers defeated Mounds 52-O3 Beggs 15-O3 Tahlequah 7-Cy then they played Haskell who w,5 also undefeated until then. Haskell had one of the best teams it had ever had: their players outweighed ours 15 pounds to the man. This game was one of the Grudge Battlesg the Tigers scored the first and only Touchdown and holding the Hay Makers- 'eoreless in one of the best games played in Broken Arrow in 15 years. ' The next week Tulsa.Clinton invaded the local field for the Home Coming game of the year. One of the largest crowds in the history witnessed this game. The motive of the Tigers was re- venge fer the previous year Tulsa Clinton had won 30-O. However at the beginning of the game the Clintoneers scored two touch- downs and the Tigers made a desperate comeback and at the half the score was Clinton 12, Broken Arrow 6. Then late in the last quarter when every one thought the game was over a blocked kick by Nalfeh recovered by Perry, gave B, A. a tie 12-12. The Tigers next went to Jenks for a.
