In lQlO the state established the Haskell State School of Agriculture in Broken Arrow, and built the building noi used for the high schoolf ,During the administration of Gov. Robertson the appropriations for several state schools were cut off. The building and adjoining property automatically reverted to the city ahd has since been used for the High school. Mr. Boles, now County Superintendent of Schools, was the first superintendent of Broken Arrow High School hm its Senior High building in 1911. The enrollment of the school has increased from year to year and with the increase of pupils the faculty has been enlarged. At the present time we have 225 pupils enrolled and seven teachers: Mr. Anderson, Supt., Mr. Patterson, Prin., Mesdames Esslinger, Simmons, Ooggins, Stapler, Williamsg.and r--' Wortman. The school has taken part in athletics and literary activities since its foundation, was a member of the Oil Valley Conference until the current year when it helped organize the Northeastern Six Conference, and became a member-of the same. ' The progress made in the high-school has been very noticeable and as we shall continue to progress we shall continue to demand attention. ' We owe special mention to Mrs. Esslinger, Mrs Williams, and Mrs. Sprague, as they have taught many years. His ever watchfulness keeps the school up to date and in the front ranks of high schools. The present faculty of the Broken Arrow High School holds excellent records for thier teaching. We have just such a leader in Superintendent C. S. Anderson who has been with this school three years and has brought it up to the high standard required of good high schools. Under his jurisdiction much progress has been made and different classes added. He has made a study of the curricula of schools which resulted in the organization of a junior high school in which the pupils are now prepared to enter senior high without experiencing that 'green feeling' formerly feltg and in the addition, in the senior high school, of extra-curricular activities which will help the pupil to gain an insight into some of the professions which he might enter. Each year a class of graduates goes out to seek its fortune in the world, much better prepared for having been in school at Broken Arrow. Its members are going out and making themselves prominent in the business and social world because of the wise training of his faculty of teachers. . He has-shown himself sympathetic with pupils and helpful to them. .He.realizes that school is to prepare citizens, that the big thing in a boy's life is his attitud towards work and life in general. - ' .. . . The thirty-six members of the class are citizens of the United States by birth, twenty of them having been born in Oklahoma, four in Texas, two in New Mexico, two in West Virginia, one in Illinois, one in Tennessee, one in Missouri, and three in Arkansas. ' Twenty of its members are handsome and valiant, sixteen charming and demure. From its combined height of nearly two-hundred feet it can look into the windows of the fourteenth story of the Woolworth building on Broadway. Its combined weight of 4,594 pounds is surely enough to anchor its feet to unimaginative work even though its head be in the clouds. Its combined years number 682. Consider the wisdom of a class which has seen 663 years. NWhat you do, do wellu has been the motto of this Class and through it, it has grown sturdy and invincible In its Freshman year the class numbered seventy- two enthusiastic members who at their first class meet- ing chose Mrs. Hayes as Sponsorg Acie Benedict Pres- identg Add Davis vice-presidentg and Thelma Gibson Secretary-Treasury. ' 1 The first year was filled with excitement and passed all-too soon. The day after the class, with its sponsor, went out to pick cotton, groans and moans were heard every where as the different individuals went up and down the stairs. - At the beginning of its Sophomore year it was found that about twenty of its Freshmen classmates had left it but William Kramer and Jim Dabbs appeared in their stead. This time Mrs. Esslinger was chosen . sponsor and has continued to ably guide us the remain- der of our high school career. The Sophomore year was perhaps the quietest and most eventful for it was then that we did our best work and made the highest grades. - A. We as Juniors were glad to have the privilege of giv- ing a play and providing a banquet for the Seniors. In this year the boys were Basket-Ball champions in the Glass Tournament and Lola Randle was chosen as Foot-Ball Queen. The Senior year has not been all joy, but also brought its sorrows. The grim reaper stepped into our midst and took our beloved classmate, Ruth Graves, from us, leaving a vacant chair in our Glass and a vacant spot in our hearts We also were in syhprthy with Supt. and Mrs. Anderson in their sorrow due to the passing on of Mr. Anderson's mother Mrs. Esslinger who had efficiently guided us through our Sophomore and Junior year, again took the burden of sponsoring us. Jasper Hart was chosen Pres., Add Davis Vice-Presg Lola Randle SecretaryrTreas. ' ' ' I This Glass, which is the largest to graduate from Broken Arrow High is leaving the long wishedffor lockers to the school. ,s 1 Through this class the first annual of the school was published and through its influence the caps and gowns- were bought and a standard design for the school was adopted. , ' ' By the Seniors' obtaining the standard design for the school the Balfour Engraving Company presented a Scholastic Honorary, Loyalty Plague to the school. Jasper Hart re- ceived the honor of being first to have his name placed on the elite as honor student of the year of !Z9. Two of our class nenbers, Ben Bayes and Dorathy Bchierloh, Won first and second p1ace,and received the ' gold and silver medals in the citizenship contest sponsor- ed by the Chamber of Commerce. Ten of the boys of the Glass were lettermen of the football team and again they were Basket Ball Champions in the Class Tournsment.- , . In 1926 forty five green and gawky little Freshmen- began their most illustrious high school career. We bit at every thing that camesalongy from elevator tickets to fake base ball gamesn' Ted Ninmangwas elected president of our class with Mrs. Williams as sponsor. During this year of suffering we set a record for Freshman grades that we think has never been broken. ' ' ', ' Several of the b'vs composed the Manual Training class taught by B. L. Josbrrn. Here we set a new record for workmanship. Everyqtlme a.slight noise was heard in the shop, something like playing WYankee Doodleu, with a mallet, he would rush madly down stairs making so much noise in doing so that by the time he arrived we were all hard at work. This is just one example of the present ambitious Juniors. All worked very hard and we managed to get enough units to continue our school career--as Sopho- mores the next year. f ' As Sophomores we set a higher record under'the reign of Pres. Gertrude Rice and Vice Pres. J. C. Walker. Mr. R. D. Patterson, the new principg1'was selected as sponsor. In this year we excelled our former records in grades, making among the highest on reco, . We were kept very busy with our social activities too, for we realized that to keep ahead of the Freshmen we must enter into Wsassietyn so we were kept busy giving ourselves parties. That year the Sophomores studied Latin II and Geom- 4 etry. If it wasn't one spasm it was another, but we strug- gled manfully and succeeded in passing so that the next Dui ' lil, mini' ' 11-a-sumo year we were able to give ourselves the plural title of Juniors. As Juniors we elected Doyle Morris president. We ohms as sponsor Mrs. B. C. Simmons. Nothing will be said of our high record as it is bad form to have such an excellent record that it discourages the rest of the school. This year was one of worry because of the need of money to give the Seniors a banquet. There were so n many good looking Seniors that the girl's attention was distracted, so really, our record wasn't so bad after all. This year we entered upon our dramatic career. The play committee, after some debating. chose the play, nBut- ternut's Briden, with the hope that it would Ngo over bign. Now we feel that the Senior play of 'lb will be Wsomething to rave about.W Jmrfofe PAWS' FM' ffja W First. To invent a erasures that can not be of Mrs. Coggine. Second. This class was then small but it was destined to become the largest and best class ever to enter this High School. Of the 91 that entered high school only eleven started here. This eleven with a few more started under the super- vision of Hrs. Ransom. In 1921 they passed to the second grade and was taught by Miss Corning. After another successful year they were promoted .J the third grade. Miss.Barron, teacher of this class, passed the class, which was always growing to Miss Burdette who was teaching the fourth grade. Miss Ross was the nest teacher and she promoted them to their first man teacher, Mr. Bowles. Under Mr. Bowles many of the Freshman boys became members of the Boy Scouts. Mr. Bowles, being a kind and consid-v erate man, let the class go to Jr. High. The Jr. High was taught by Mrs. Stapler, Mrs. Sprague and Mr. Nickels. This year 11927-287 the class reached its peak in , enrollment, numbering about 61. During the year the class was well represented in all of the Grade School activities Thege being: track. basketball, glee club and a fins pep c u . This years Freshman class is the largest class in the history of Broken Arrow High School. Though a few of the 61 stopped school there were enough pupils from the surrounding districts to make the class number 91. When we entered, the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, just to show their appreciation of our being present rubbed all the bark off the trees surrounding the campus. After that we were declared real Freshman. We could easily sce we should have to strive hard to keep with these boys. When the semester!s grades were averaged we wore second class in the number of A's received--- Seniors 22, Freshman 20, not so bad. 'Harry Layton our class president for the last two terms has tried to make our class the best in school. After this hard nine months of labor we all hope to be Sophomores next year. Also, we hope and shall be this school's most successful Seniors, in 1932. f7REbE9W5N'-Q . lst Row. The season opened with enthusiasm. coach Patterson had great plans for winning the Oil Valley Conference, and rapidly get the boys in first class shape for games. A large number of boys from all classes reported for the first practice. The team was composed'1argely ef Seniors but'there was plenty more material for the team that is to come next year. g' l. The first conference game was with Glenpeol at B. A. Both teams wele well matched but Broken Arrow blocked punts on the glenpool ten yard line for two touchdowns, score of 13-Oy r ' ,',. . The second eonference game was with Beggs at B. A. This was the first time we had played Beggs in four years, and they beat us four years ago but they couldn't do this year. We wen 12-O. The third conference game was with Kiefer. Kiefer had defeated Broken Arrow at Kiefer last year and the B. A. team looked for a hard fight and they were not disappointed, but they fought harder and scored two touchdowns on Kiefer. f13-O7 , The fourth conference game was'with.Bixby at Bixby. This game was played in a muddy field and B. A. plays would not work. Bixby scored one touchdown and kept the lead throughout the game. As a result of this hard and faithful work the football team of '39 tied for the Oil Valley Conference for the second time in three yearsg with Kiefer in '37 b, and Bixby in '29, The final game played Thanksgiving. was not completed, Jenks forfeited to Broken Arrow 1 tc O. Broken Arrow had lost only one game and Bixby had tied two games. Broken Arrow challenged Bixby to play eff the tie but they refused. Coach Patterson will not accept any of the glory of winning a gameg but every time there is a good team you will find then? is a good coach backing it up. The boys basketball team of 1929 was, as termed in slang, a 'Wow'. This was the third year Broken Arrow has had a basketball team and in competition with the other teams df the Oil Valley Confer nce, which have played basketball since we were a school,-we came out third. Most of the games were good and so far as a following was concerned was a success. The only game we lost on the Broken Arrow court was one with Kiefer which should have been won only for some erroneous p1a.S'ing, r Broken Arrow entered several tournaments as usual and get ,some very good experience. these we were the favorites We lose several of our captain, Loyd Randle, whose has helped Broken Arrow win others we lose are: Jasper Although we didn't win any of' in all of our games. players this year, among them our playing for the last two years a majority of their games. Those returning areg Doyle Morris, Herman Ragsdale, Captain elect, Mark Blythe, Elvin Goodson, Oliver Plant, Charles Mayes, and several new ones who will do much to make a winning team. Our schedule this year contained the four teams in our section of the eonferenceg Bixby, Glenpool, Kiefer, Union, and the teams not in the conference were: Haskell, Skiatook, Central, Porter, Cush1ng,and owasso. After the close of the season the question of providing sweaters came up and to meet this difficulty the boys and girls basketball teams decided to put on the play, WPrairie Rosen. Th play was successfully put on and netted S99.37, which nag enough to buy sweaters for seven boys and eight girls. The cast was! Loyd Randle, Add Davis, Jasper Hard, Doyle Morris, Mark Blythe, Lyle Grawford Russell Latch, Lola Randle, Mary Lee Kramer, Beatrice wyattg and Faye Miller. The sweaters were of good quality and something to be proud Off tvjj A , 4 e- sri ...B i i e ' 1 ..-..-... , 4 . .. , , :Y GJRLS,Bf1Sl6E'TBAU. The girls basketball-teams this year was far more a i success than any preceding year. This was the sedbnd-year for the majority of the players, nevertheless they played like veterans when up against four year players. The girls teams of this year was the first team of Broken Arrow tobeat Union and win a tournament. The bronze award always brings back pleasant memories. E 1 - The tournament won was the District Tornament of Wagoner ahere they beat the Tahlequah Tigerettes, which is seldom ' one, and won the finals by beating Union, our old Rivals. . Three of our girls were on the all-tournament team: Lola Randle, forward, Beatrice Wyatt,'Oenter3 Mona Garter, Guard. The girls team placed second in the Oil Valley Confer- erence, Glenpool and Union tying for first, altho Broken Arrow beat Union twice. The girls lost only one game on their home court, which was with Glenpool. ,,' The girls are expected to take the conference next year as they lose only one player, Lola Randle, who was captain in 1937. The Girls won over all the teams in the Northeastern Six conference this year and with all the players hack it looks like a promising year for Broken Arrow. The team was coached by R. D. CPatJi Patterson and captained by Whhhyu Latch. Much credit is due them for their efforts with the team. The steady pitching of Doyle Morris played a big part in these victories as did the excellent catching of Mark Blythe, who is a very handy man behind the bat. The first sack was held by Jasper Hart, who rarely made an error at his position. Second base was very well taken care of by Jim Dagbs. Captain Latch played short stop and smothered all the grounders that came his way. Garlen Creekmore held the Uhot cornern and always did his bit. Baxter Wilson in left field, Lyle Crawford in center garden and Charles Mayes in right field chased the flies wiich came into their respective territories. Oliver Plant played first base and also pitched. Bem.Lail played second and Clarence Baker played R. field A ,, TEA 671' At the call for track in 1929 eight men reported. This year we had the largest club ever had. The organization was completed Mn September with Mrs. Louise Simmons as sponsor. Her pep and enthusiasm seem contagious and the girls spent many hours learning new songs and yells. .The membership was open to the entire school and about 75 boys and girls availed themselves of the opportunity of showing 'the boysn that they were backing them. The teachers were all in perfect accord with the movement. At each game the dub marched out to the field and from its place on the sidelines, led by Lola Randle, Beatrice Wyatt, and Ruby Miller, yell leaders gave the boys encouragement to put their all into the game. During the half the Sirls, dressed in white and carrying streamers of red and white, marched out on the field and put on a stunt. They' made a pleasing picture as they chanted, 'we'll win this game, today we'1l win this gamen. After each game the visiting team and the home teams were entertained in the High School Auditorium. The hour spent together socially helped to cement the friendship between schools and to show the boys how stanchly they were supported. At different times the refreshments were served by the teachers, the Soph- omore Glass, and the Pep Clubg but usually this was done by the Home Economics Department. ' At the close of the football season Faye Miller was elected Football Queen and was crowned with ap- propriate ceremony. That day she and her attendants were honor guests of the club. 2 To show their appreciation the football boys ave a banquet to the Club and teachers, December 15, l 28. Games had been won and lost but the school spirit gained during the year far over balanced the lost games. -, lr. G b G JefmP4eQi:i?,,,,a, 3--e,,. .f PSPCZU8 lst. Row. Broken Arrow High School began publishing their first regular school paper UArrow Tipsn in the last 4 semester of the year 1937-28.2 We had never been able to publish a paper before on account of lack of supplies. Mrs. Esslinger, teacher of the Journalsim class of '27-'88, has sponsored the paper of both years, She was business manager of her college paper and is experienced in the work. Mary Esther Updike was the first editor of our paper. She also had had experience as she was a member of the staff Udlassen Lifen of the Jr. High school paper at Oklahoma City. 4, , Russell Latch is Editor of the paper this year. As assistant Editor of the 'Arrow Tipsn last year Russell gained valuable experience. Russell always worked hard to make the paper a success, and the school appreciates his efforts. s Much of the credit for the publication of this little paper belongs to Charles Peterson, publisher. The operations of the mimeograph are no longer a new thing to him. The typists named on the staff have printed the handbills, programs, enrollment cards, and other printing needed for the school. We feel that the Arrow Tips has been a success because it has given the people an idea of what is being done at school. It has given a view of all the depart- ments and things that were of interest to the students. The paper has been a medium of advertising of athletic events, plays, and other events, in which the school participated, bearing all the expense of this advertisingg considering all these things, and the valuable experience the pupils have gained, we feel justified in saying it has been a success. In addition to their double period class room work the boys are required to carry projects at home either livestock or crops. This requires that a boy must either be on the farm or favorably situated in town and have the support of his parentst They try at all times to put into practice what they learn in addition to observing the best farm practices of the community. The enrollment in this de-l partment has grown from thirteen to thirty with splendid prospects for next year. A few years ago two credits were allowed for the same work but the credit was cut to one in order to keep out any tendency toward taking the subject for credits sake. This past year the slogan has been nOwn your Livestocku From a total owned of 15 head they have boosted the owner- n. ship to 39 head of cattle, 32 head of hogs and 90 of poultry. 'Active part has been taken in the fairs with the objec-i tive 'Learn new practices' instead of specializing on winning in particular. They represented their school at the Tulsa State Fair winning 390.00 in cash premiums. e Five of the boys showed livestock of their own and all but one placed well up in the money, Singer winning second and . Connery third on Jersey yearlings. Harry Carter first on T his Shorthorn. Many grain samples placed well up in the - money. A This years plans call for much more active showing of livestock, already Harry Carter and Rhinie Wagner have 8100.00 registered beef calves on feed for the Fair this fall. They will show at Tulsa then at th American Royal T at Kansas City, where the calves will be sold. . At least seven dairy females will be shown and the l grain samples as usual. ' y The boys get five credits for four years work, the extra credit to cover the outside work. Active participation is taken in all community work and improvement. The whole work is built around the idea of learning the 1 experience and ideas of farming that have been gathered together while young instead of having to wait and ex eri- ence these hard knocks as their fathers have done. In l9l7 accredited music was firmly established in our schools as a regular subject, with Mrs. M.C. Williams as teacher, who still holds that position. The High School Girls Glee Club was organized that year with a membership of twelve singers, but was entered in the first county contest and came out victorious ini first place. 1918 found the glee club still intact, with sixteen members, also the music department boasted of a splendid quartet, which won first place in the 1918 meet. Since the first year of its existence this department has won trophies in glee club, quartet, solo voices, until it boasts of twelve medals in individual voice, fourteen cups and four nenants. The individuals who have gotten their foundation in music in Broken Arrow High School have made good in the different universities which they have entered by being placed in University Quartets and Glee Clubs. The department now has sixty-two members in girls glee club and twenty-two members in boys glee club, one of the best girls and boys quartets in the county and splendid soloists, in boys and girls voices. The Senior standing highest in scholarship, loyalty, and achievement for the four years of High School is to have his name engraved upon an individual plate on the plaque. If he stays sleek and powerful, a mule must have good hay in his manger and the right stuff in his feed box. Motors are the sane way. They are made for hard work, but unless you give them the right rations they lose pepand power. And there is this important difference between mules and motors. A poor mule will get back in condition on good rations, but once a motor nuns down it takes something more than correct rations to put it back in condition. Our definition of good rations for automobile include: First, an oil thin enough to lubricate when it's cold, thick enough for protection when it's hot and tough enough all the time to risist crank case dilution and keep metal from metal.
