THE 1965 BROHICAN Published by the Senior Class BROGDEN HIGH SCHOOL Dudley, North Carolina Volume 12 FOREWORD As Seniors we can fully realize the extent to which Brogden High School has affected our lives. Our teachers, classmates and close friends for the past twelve years have centered around our school. As we prepare to leave for the various paths our lives may take, we leave as our last contribution this yearbook. We hope that at some future date when we chance to look through our yearbook, it will bring back pleasant memories of the teachers, friends, and classmates who have become a part of our past. We, the Senior Class, present to you the BROHICAN OF 1965. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Classes Activities Features Sports Elementary Ads GRADUATES We thank you for lighting a spark in our lives in an attempt to guide us on the right path. Your pa- tience and devotion have earned you a permanent place in our hearts. In order to repay you in a small measure for all you have done for us, we the Senior Class, would like to dedicate this, our 1965 BRO- HICAN to you, MR. DAVID EARL SUTTON. ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL Dedicated! Understanding! Efficient! These are only a few of the words that we could use to describe our principal, Mr. L. J. Outlaw, Jr. Not only is he regarded as the authoritative figure of our school but is also considered to be a friend of the individual student. We are indebted to him for all that he has done for us and for our school. E SECRETARY To Mrs. Phillip Bryan, Janet to all of us here atBrog- den, we are truly grateful for her many good qualities, talents, and service to all of us. in addition to her duties as school secretary, she has been a friend in general to students and teachers. Janet, we are thankful to have you in our school office. SCHOOL BOARD Our school board is made up of five ded- icated men who are constantly striving to better our educational opportunities. They are, as seated, Mr. Joseph Grady, Mr. Ru- dolph Gwaltney, Mr. Winfield Byrd, Mr. Rand Montague, and Mr. Les- lie Casey. HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Mrs. Betty B. Miller, B.S. Through rain, sleet, snow, or fog, they are ever ready to complete with safety their appointed rounds. Keeping house for over 1,000 students is quite a job, but this year we were fortunate in having with us Mr. and Mrs. Underwood. They have succeeded, despite our frequent carelessness, in keep- ing our school neat and clean and giving it the atmosphere of a home away from home. LUNCHROOM STAFF Day after day the wonderful women of our lunchroom staff plan and prepare a hearty meal for us. Un- der the careful guidance of Mrs. Gwaltney, the supervisor, the lunch- room staff prepares ex- cellent dishes contain- ing the vitamins and minerals which are es- sential to our diet. THE SENIOR CLASS We are the last to graduate from Brogden High, but though time passes, our mem- ories will always be filled with the wonderful times we ' ve had, the teachers and class- mates we knew. Our hearts are filled with pride and devotion for Brogden High. It took a long time and hard work, but we made it! MASCOTS Each year the Senior class chooses two children of pre -school age to be the Senior Class mascots. This year we elected Miss Jenean Waters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Eugene Waters of Brogden, and Paul Aromando, Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Aromando of Goldsboro. In this section of our annual we would like to recognize our senior advisors, Mrs. Elizabeth O ' Berry and Mrs. Nan Popiel. We do not think that any other two people could have done a better job. Both have the patience and personality which blends harmoniously with that of our class. It is comforting for a student to know that he has someone to lean upon. They may have bent a little under the strain, but they never broke. They will always retain a special place in our hearts. SENIOR CLASS 13 H. F. Eva Neel is our 1964 MISS F.H.A. and we are very proud of her. With the acknowledgement of this honor, we present the activities which are another aspect of Brogden High. These activities are most important to the student body as a means of developing the individual character. 39 BETA CLUB i OFFICERS President Cathy Ward Treasurer Jean Royal Vice President Johnny Worrell Secretary Jean Best The Beta Club, a national honorary society, is composed of students who have maintained a ninety average or above, for their first three semesters of high school. The Glee Club is also responsible for music at the commencement exercises. 41 ANNUAL STAFF The annual staff has worked diligently this year to make this farewell publication of the BROHICAN the best issue ever published. The long hours after school, the hours spent late at night, and all the won- derful cooperation displayed by the various committees has helped to make our farewell yearbook what it is. The annual staff sincerely hopes that you will find this last issue the best one yet. The members are as follows: Advertising manager, Ann Beaman; Business manager, Lynn Overman; Editor, Nancy Gwaltney; Assistant editor, Brenda O ' Berry; Advertising manager, Kay Scott; High School classes, Beverly Benton; Activities editor, Lois Casey; Elementary classes, Norene Crumpler; Circulation manager, Jenny Aromando; Photographer, Gerald Greenup; Features editor, Jean Best; Copy editor, Frances Hasselbach; Sports editor, D. When hot off the press, the SANDSPUR is the main attraction to the students of Brogden. Written and pub- lished by members of the Beta Club and reporters from each home room and club, the SANDSPUR contains grade news, editorials, features, and the latest gossip . Growing bigger and better every year is your school paper, the SANDSPUR. 43 F.H.A. OFFICERS President .... Cathy Ward Vice President .... Beverly Aycock Treasurer ... Jo Carol Grady Secretary Eva Neel The major goal of the Future Homemakers of America is to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living. Every girl who takes Home Economics has an opportunity to join F. H. A. The many pro- jects supported by the Brogden Chapter of F. H. A. include the sponsoring of an annual fashion show, a Mother- Daughter Banquet, and an F. H. A. Stunt Night. F.F.A. The boys of the Brogden F.F.A. Chapter have worked hard this year. They have participated in various ac- tivities such as building the wooden staircases for our new mobile classrooms, serving in the concession stand at home basketball games, and always being around when a man ' s helping hand is needed. Mr. Jernigan, the agri- culture instructor, has worked closely with these boys to make for a better farming future in North Carolina. The Future Teachers of America is a relatively new club at Brogden. This year they have managed to be- come organized and put some enthusiasm into their work. Much work still remains to be done before they can accomplish many of the goals which the members have set for themselves. The F.T.A. had as their advisor Mrs. Betty Miller. 46 LIBRARY CLUB FEATURES Each year a member of the F.H.A. Chapter is chosen to represent our school in the annual Wayne County Fair Queen contest. This year we are especially proud of our representative. For the first time in Brogden ' s history our representative, Miss Nancy Gwaltney, was crowned Miss Wayne County Fair Queen . With this, we introduce the section called Features, which includes the extra-curricular events that make this year an unforgettable one. 48 Part of our Homecoming Court is pictured here. These students have the responsibility of leading the processional at graduation, and of ushering at all com- mencement events. It is truly an honor to be chosen a marshal, a goal which these students have worked hard to attain. 56 DAR GOOD CITIZEN Brenda O ' Berry Each year the David Williams Chapter of the D. A. R. presents a Good Citizen ' s Award to a senior girl in each high school in the county. The selection is made by a faculty committee. This year our good citizen , Brenda O ' Berry, won second place in the district. 57 oause a girl must be popular, brilliant, and charming. Nancy has done a great deal for Brogden and this honor is a tribute to her poise, personality, and dedica- tion to our school! We take pride in this year ' s selection and feel that wherever she may go, she will reflect the high ideals of our school. We present to you, Miss Brogden High School of 1965, MISS NANCY GWALTNEY. CHEERLEADERS We have heard a lot said about school spirit over the past few years, most of it critical. But anyone who attended our basketball games knows what Brog- den ' s school spirit is really like. The enthusiasm is largely due to our cheer- leaders. They followed our basketball teams through bad weather and long, tiring schedule, lending support and encouragement to ath- letes. As a school, we owe them a great debt. SCORE and TIME-KEEPERS The timekeeper and scorekeepershave worked this final year at Brogden to keep accurate scores on the scoreboard. We appreciate the effort they have made on behalf of the Rams. MANAGERS The managers are respon- sible for the care, storage, and dispensing of the basketball equipment at practice and games. They also practice their skill in first-aid and the art of morale boosting. RAMS IN ACTION The boys and girls basketball teams have worked real hard this year. Many people do not realize the practice and effort put into basketball by these students. All of them are not stars, but their team- work, under the direction of Royce Swinson, carried them far. Although we did not win the tournament, Brogden was the only school to have both girls and boys to play in the final game. We are proud to call the RAMS our own. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Jo Carol Grady Mary Rackley Faye Pollock BOYS ' BASKETBALL Strike up the band! This familiar phrase is brought to mind at sight of the elementary band composed of pupils from grades four through eight. Under the direction of Mrs. Audrey Wasner, they have made re- markable progress. We expect to be hearing from them in the near future. ELEMENTARY Mr. Luby H. Byrd, Jr., A.B.
