Jumwnni The Big Top The circus has its Big Top Made of canvas, taut with ropes, And underneath it shelters A brood of childish hopes. Life, too, has its Big Top With its canopy of stars And you and I as well as the rest Are the acrobats on bars, The bareback riders, the laughing clowns, Each one must play his part As Time, the Master of the Ring, Snaps his whip for the show to start. So give it the best that's in you For it's only a one night standg And there'll be no repeat performances- By reason of popular demand. by Wilma W. Burton We, the Senior Class of Brockway-Snyder-Washington Joint High School, are proud to present The Dawnn of 1953. The clamor and din of the circus tent have provided a back- ground as colorful as many of the experiences which we have had during our training period. If printed pages can bring back the sleepless excitement of the night before the big parade down Main Street, then, perhaps, you can share our enjoyment as we thrill to past familiar scenes as reproduced in this book about the Greatest Show on Earth, 'our high school. For their finale the class of 1953 appropriately stand in the center ring for the acclaim they justly deserve. We, The Dawn staff and the entire Senior Class, want to extend our deepest appreciation to the people of Brockway and the surrounding communities for their generous support of this production. We also wish to thank Mr. Robert Merriman for the fine photography, Kurtz Bros. for the printing, and Zimmerman and Company for the engraving. Without the 'help of these people and the co-operation of the administration and faculty of this school. this eighth edition of The Dawni' would have been impossible. 6 Dedication ,A ni-si xi :pee X-V-. A. Mr. John McNulty As a tribute to his never ending encouragement and confidence in us, we, the class of 1953, wish to dedicate our issue of the Dawn to a member of our faculty Whom we have admired throughout the years. He has sincerely directed our learning along the lines of democratic principles as a teacher and a class adviser. Many traits of character and personality have endeared him to us. We will long remember his Wise and Witty Words, his tireless Work, his friendly smile and his encouraging word when we needed him most. Words cannot express our deep feeling and appreciation for him but we take this wav of showing to him our sincere gratitude. It is with a deep sense of pride that vve dedicate our yearbook to Mr. john McNulty. 41 -an f,-A ij J f O5 I 'EOL ' il' Um, f Al- I E., - pfl0Llll,C,Q!M., .... -dj ,,,-,,,,.1 Our fehool Board Kbove: lflaine Kearney lSee.l. l'. They have become star performers in many different school activities. Top billing does not come to anyone without hard work and the Class of 1953 is no exception. The members have worked unceasingly as a team to bring about their success. The Seniors have demonstrated their clever- ness at every opportunity. ln music they were the mainstay of the chorus and the band. They proved themselves in dramaties by participating in operettas. assembly programs, and class plays. The Dawn and The Buzxern are examples of their literary talent. ln athletics they exhibited their prowess in football, basketball. baseball, wrestling and intra-mural sports. They partici- pated and held ollices in all of the schools clubs and organizations. The members of the Senior Class demon- strated their organizational qualities by produc- ing the best and most original junior-Senior Prom in the history of the school. They toiled long and hard, early and late, but the end justi- fied the means and they were rewarded with a feeling of deep satisfaction at a job well done. Not only did the Seniors strive for honors in activities but also in their studies. They studied hard and learned their lessons well as they struggled to come as close to perfection as possi- ble in their scholastic standards. The honor roll contained many of the Seniors' names and they were rewarded for their efforts by being allowed to take part in Student Participation Day. Now the Class of 1953 is about to leave the protection of their Big Topf, They must prove themselves and become stars in their own right. They have been well trained to face their prob- lems and they will go to meet this new challenge unwaveringly with confidence in their abilities. Though they will become separated. they will keep their memories of each other and remain a lasting credit to their Alma Mater. After losing to Svkesville 26-0 on a very hot day, the liovers nipped the liimershurgis hovs from Clarion countv 13-G. This compensated for l5roekway's heart hreakiug loss to this team in 1951. The l1over's game with their old rival. Ridg- way, was a moral victory for the Rovers. The score was 13-13. ln the next important league game with 13roolcvi11e injuries and a tough team spelled defeat for Brockwav to the tune of 13-6. The Rovers found their next opponent. Clari- on. an easv victim. Thev ran over the Bohcats 31-7. lfresh from their victorv at C1arion the Rovers went to Smethport and although the opponent had a tough team, our hovs proved too much for the Smethport e1even. They came home with a 20-1-1 victory. The league leader, l1eynoldsx'i11e, was our next opponent at the home field. The hall went up and down the field. Both teams threatened. hut neither scored. NVhen the final gun had sounded, the score hoard showed, 0 to 01 The Rovers ended the season at Iohnsonhurg. The hig eleven from there stopped our team to the tune oi 27-2. Enthusiastic spectators, who watched the QQIIIICS. conceded that the 1952 season was one of the hest in recent vears. Coach McNulty's hopes were realized, as for the first time in 16 years a Brockway varsity basketball team won the Bn league crown. The Rovers did this by winning all twelve league games. which proved conclusively that they were the hest team in the league. Before and during the regular season the hopes were high that the Rovers would luring the coveted trophy to the Class Town. These hopes were well founded, for the seven returning lettermen laid the hasis of an experienced team. One of the sweetest victories for the Rovers came at the expense of the Ridgwav Elkers. The gaine was plaved on Ridgvvavis court and when the final whistle hlew the Rovers had annexed a 51-42 victory. The Rovers played hard in all their league games. and for this reason it is difficult to pick out an exceptional game. Two of the hardest fought games were played with the Revnoldsville Bulldogs. hut the Rovers managed to win hoth games, each hy six points. On February 17 the Rovers traveled to Sykesville and heat the Leop- ards 56--16. This was the first time in many years that a Rover team heat a Sylxesville team on their own floor. This was the victory that clinched the league for the Rovers. Besides winning all their league games the Rovers won G out of their 10 exhihition games. This made an impressive total of l8 wins and 4 losses. a record of which the Rovers can he proud. 45 'fb i?lQfY7TJ XT.. L M 1 ea W . In their white and gold uniforms these high-stepping young ladies proudly exhibit their ability to the enthusiastic spectators. These skills that look so easy to a bystander really require hours of hard work. Starting with the basic figure-eight twirlv the girls have many lone practice sessions until at last they master their batons, and be- come proficient in the art of twirling. Always trying to improve and learn new twirls, these enterprising young ladies sent two of the young- er majorettes to twirlers camp for a two weeks period of training. Led by their capable captain, Florence Gallo, the majorettes worked long and hard to combine the old and new twirls into peppy routines. Flashing through these diflicult twirls the spark- ling majorettes are an added attractionv to any foot- ball game. These four appear in majorette uniform for final vear. Kneeling: F. Gallo. Membership in the Student Council is determined by majority vote, one student per home room. Not only do the members of the Student Councils plan all student activity. but they are responsible for a complete and thorough job in everv performance they undertake. An outstanding project sponsored by the Senior High Student Council was the Student Handbook. It aided in explaining our schoolls policy and function. lts main purpose was to orientate new students into the routine of student life in our school. During the football and basketball seasons the Councils were responsible for many dances held in the gymnasium after the games. The money made at these dances was used to defray the expenses incurred during the year. All in all, the Councils have proved to be capable. etlicient, ful. and quite success- 64 Art Club projects.
