Using our high school as a back- ground for this play, we have presented famil- iar views and faces to capture the setting. This drama of the year, beginning September 1950 and ending Iune 1951, was indeed a year of service, education, and recreation. As an additional feature, this year for the first time, The Dawn has paused to honor the graduates of the Class of 1901. These men and women are now celebrating their fiftieth anni- versary as members of one of the first gradu- ating classes of Brockway High School. The yearbook, a student project, would not be possible without the help and co-operation of the administration and the faculty of our school. We are also grateful to Kurtz Bros., Zimmerman Engraving Company, and our pho- tographer, Mr. Robert Merriman, for their tech- nical assistance. The entire class is deeply appreciative of the kindness and financial aid extended by the citizens, industries, and busi- nessmen of Brockway and the surrounding com- munities. We are indeed indebted to every per- son Who played his part and helped make this book's publication possible. The project accomplished, we humbly sub- mit to you the first three acts of our life as a pre- lude to the greatest drama of all. The book will be a success only if you, the reader, think it so. --- All the world's a stage, and all the men and Women merely players. They all have their exits and their entrances: and one man in his time plays many parts. -Shakespeare. L CAROLINE LONGWELL TO MISS CAROLINE LONGWELL, We, the members of the class of 1951, wish to dedicate our issue of The Dawn . During the past several years Miss Long- well has proved herself Worthy of this dedica- tion in many ways. Because ot constant in- terest in young people, she has advised and guided many students on successful paths. All her classes could not help but feel the warmth ot her charming manner, the enthusiasm and diligence with which she discharged her respon- sibilities, her democratic sense of values, her sincerity, and her willingness to help us, and, Min Lonqwell checks over her work ior the ddy. Q n, lastly, the confidence she had in our possibili- ties. With her previous experience as yearbook adviser, Miss Longwell was also an invaluable help to us in the preparation of our annual. Her services in the capacity of adviser were indis- pensable. The dedication of this yearbook to her rep- resents our tribute, however small it may be. We wish all possible success and happi- ness in years to come to a woman who is serving society so Well in a Wonderful pro- iession. AA N 4 N QF? - J ' ' 'LL CATC7 t n -9 9 if 4' 375' I X 5.1 S- . L. The Producers of our drama, the joint school board, as elected representatives of the people, is made up of capable, responsible citizens. Because the Brockway-Snyder schools have always had capable and efficient school direc- tors, our schools have been progressive and in line with the best thoughts and practice of edu- cation. Through their diligence our schools fizcomm, 'Wfzoducrfzf' have multiplied and diversified the courses, thereby expanding the curricula and extra- curricular activities until today we have the democratic training we need to prepare us for a successful life. The success of the Brockway-Snyder loint Schools has been due in a large measure to the school board and indirectly to the people who elected them, We, the Senior Class, deeply appreciate the efforts of our Producers in making our school experience both instructive and pleasant. tv 'V' I -11 W Yfm,m,5 SECRETARY X Alulm Miss Lois Calhoun. The class oi '53, on stage only a year, has already assumed a vital role in high school affairs. l95l was indeed an outstanding year for every sophomore. Participation in all phases of extracurricu- lar activities helped make their high school life more complete. Although they were outstand- ing in all activities, they did not neglect their studies. A glance at the honor roll reveals the names of many sophomores. The Sophomore Class proves to be a jolly group of young people. They are always avail- able to help make all social events a pleasant memory. Because of their avid class spirit and interest, they are easily succeeding in making themselves known. Already their marks are beginning to show. This past year, these students have rapidly advanced toward their goal of becoming well- rounded individuals. Eagerly they look for- ward to the last two years of high school life with confidence in their ability. Row 1--lolt to riqht- I. Hy- sonq, S. Curry, M. Kroh, B. Pye, I. Whelpley, P. Stowort. S. The Leopards grabbed a 6-0 verdict as a determined Rover attack failed in the last period. Smarting from defeat, the Rovers uprooted a Rimersburg eleven 27-6 before a large turn- out of home town critics. The following Saturday, on the home turf, a surprisingly powerful Ridgway organization plowed the Rovers under with a 34-0 whitewash. Brookville struck another in the Rover loss column at home when they fashioned a 13-6 half time lead into a 25-13 decision. Under the lights of their home park, the Clarion Bobcats made it three straight when First and ten. they handed the luckless Rovers a 20-7 setback. ln another night encounter, Brockway sud- denly flashed the spirit that was to leave the experts stunned the rest of the season as they struck back at St, Marys in a sea of mud and water to clinch a 20-14 upset. Reynoldsville was next to feel the impact of an inspired Rover machine when the locals poured spirit, fight, and skill into a smashing 33-6 upset on the home gridiron. Brockway closed its season with a night fray at Emporium. Before a sizable crowd of loyal home town fans, a thunderstorm took a back seat while the Rovers ran roughshod to a 38-0 triumph. In the spring of 1950, Coach Robert Weitzel undertook the task of whipping into shape a track team. Because of the need for a cinder track and necessary equipment, the trackmen spent most of their time learning the fundamen- tals of track and field events. Last season the team was outfitted with new red uniforms with black numerals and dur- ing the latter part of the term a meet was sched- uled with DuBois. However, due to a lack of experience, the Rovers humbly bowed to their more seasoned foe. It was chalked up as a defeat in the record books but for the cinder grinders it was experience of the highest qual- ity. By the time track season rolls around again, the local thinclads should be ready to make their appearance in a fashion that will make other schools sit back and take notice. A nice hand-oft. Jhllalzlf, The Senior Class, under the direction of Miss Gauger, presented a rollicking mystery- cornedy entitled Arsenic and Old Lace by loseph Kesselring on the sixteenth of February. Two sweet old maids, Abby and Martha Brewster Clean Harding and Yola Amitronel just can't keep away from treating their elderly gen- tlemen boarders to wine in which they have put arsenic. Because of their generosity in the com- munity, the blame falls upon their nephew, ec- centric Teddy Brewster CRichard Adamsl, who believes himself to be Theodore Roosevelt. His brother, Mortimer Brewster lPhillip Ruffnerl, a very sane and stable young man, decides to marry, choosing as his bride, Elaine Harper lDorothy Schlemmerl, who is none other than the daughter of the minister CKenneth Morriggnj, Mortimer, happy over his coming marriage, discovers a dead body in the window seat of Lace. sters. To prevent further disaster, he rescues a prospective boarder flames Brittonl from the clutches of his aunts. He, then imme- diately makes preparation to send Teddy to Happy Dale, a sanitarium, of which Mr. Wither- spoon CMarvin Snyderl is superintendent. ln the midst of the confusion Ionathan Brewster CSamuel Pedacel, the black sheep of the family, returns home bringing with him his private plastic surgeon, Dr. Hermann Einstein flames Smithl. To graciously greet them are the police officers lClair Lundberg, Robert Rich- ards, Donald Batson, and Edward Holtl. The play reaches its height when lonathan unwillingly submits himself to the police and Abby and Martha, refusing to be separated from Teddy, prepare to spend the remainder of their lives at Happy Dale. The Dawn is produced annually to bring you, students and faculty of Brockway-Snyder High School, a combined photograph album and biography of the school year. Naturally there were times when the staff found that their problems seemed insurmount- able and the future unpredictable. lt was through the wise council of the faculty advisers that we found the right path. We are truly grateful to Miss C. Longwell, Mrs. N. Marshall, and Mr. Hysong, for their fine direction, perse- verance, and loyalty they extended to us as they worked unceasingly to make The Dawn a success. We consider ourselves especially fortunate to have had such wise and sincere backing. The yearbook staff was headed by Mary lane Curry and loan Graybill who attended to the planning of the yearbook and the execution of these plans. lohn Paruso capably took care of the problems to be encountered as business manager.
