Hysong. ln his three years with us many burdens have been placed upon his shoulders, yet Mr. Hysong always finds time to put aside his administra- tive problems in order to lend a helping hand or give an encouraging word of advice. A civic group enlists the school's aid. Mi. Hysonq frequently broadcasts necessary information. Admired and respected by both faculty and students, Mr. Hysong has, through his un- tiring efforts, introduced many improvements into our school system. His professional effi- ciency, civic pride, and pleasant personality are an inspiration to all of his associates. It is with pride that we, the graduates, elect thus to honor him. if2...,,f Of ilcfwcafion Lcx-ft to right: Mr. Hysonti tSupv. These two groups have been working together for the past twelve years in an effort to bring a variety of educational opportunities to the youth who at- tend school in this community. The present day school consolidation move- ment was presaged twelve years ago by the action of our school boards. The Brockway- Snyder Ioint Schools are always on the alert to adopt new and approved methods of school management. Board members serve without compensation and in so doing, exemplify citi- .yn Memoriam Dr. H. E Kilgus served as a member of Brockway-Snyder joint School zenship at its best. Democracy has its greatest strength in local governments composed of men and women who have an earnest desire to pro- mote the welfare and Well-being of our country. The Brockway-Snyder High School students are conscious of the unusual educational advan- tages offered them. Such things as Driver Train- ing, Music, Art, Physical Education, Dramatics, Activities, and a varied curriculum enable all to obtain a well-rounded education leading to better opportunities in an adult world. A well- trained faculty of teachers and other personnel provide, day by day, a progressive learning program. Board for twelve years, until his death November 12, l949. Born lune l, 1878 in Renova, Pennsylvania, he received his preparatory education in the public schools of this state, then attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and the lefferson Medical College. After gradua- tion, he entered the practice of medicine and later transferred to the busi- ness field, managing the Kaul Clay Plant in Toronto, Ohio and then estab- lishing the Brockway Clay Company. Dr. Kilgus was well known throughout the Commonwealth as a phy- sician, sportsman, industrialist and educator. ln later years, he took an active interest in religious and community affairs. He became associated with a number of projects which were consummated in school betterment. His last big effort was to lead a movement to raise funds to equip the high school marching band with uniforms and other instrumentation. This or- ganization is now known, by many, as the outstanding musical body in this section of the state. Through his active interest in athletics, the football squad, many times, was the recipient of his bountiful generosity. Serving as President of both the Brockway Board and the Ioint Board, many notable educational achievements came about as a result of his leadership. The Home Economics Department was reorganized and re- constructed, giving unusual advantages to those enrolled in this curricu- lum. A number of major projects for the advancement of education in this community were in the making as his life came to a close. The students of this high school wish to mark his passing by paying this tribute to his memory. Dr. H. E. Kilgus healer, teacher and friend. This life raises a monument to good citizenship. lil tilt. ll. ff. KILCIIS j6'LClfLAg Brockway ranks high. We have a group of well-qualified people guiding our students. Many faculty members have either received advanced educational degrees or are now work- ing toward that goal. Equally important and paralleling the regu- lar classroom work are many opportunities for friendly advice, vocational counseling, social training, stimulating good sportsmanship, and inspiring discouraged students. No teacher overlooks these aspects of school life. Sincerely interested in the welfare of the student body, each instructor willingly gives of both time and effort to promote the development of wells rounded individuals through curricular and extrafcurricular activities. Much of the improve- ment in our school has been due to the sincere unselfish attitude of our faculty. 1 Upper right: Mathematics and Science--Miss Longwell, Miss Shaffer, Mr. Pinge. We usually wonder what will happen when those indispensable creatures, the seniors, leave us. However, theres little cause for con- cern, for an up-and-coming group of juniors stands waiting at the threshold, eager to as- sume the top positions in all school activities. Their sponsor, Mrs. Muth, finds in the elev- enth grade a peppy group of students, well aware of what they wish to achieve and of how they may expect to do so. Last year's juniors initiated the practice of having class sweaters: their immediate succes- sors approved heartily and have this year lfmior CALM IUNIORS GO DRAMATIC adopted the blue and gold sweater as the sign of Sl , The Standard Pennant Co. received their order in january, and Spring seemed to arrive early in the halls of our school, in the form of these gaily colored apparel. Not to be outdone by the predecessors, this class has initiated a new custom, too, that of presenting a lunior Class Play. Theirs was a three-act comedy directed by Mr. l-larbach called, All on Account of Luella . The producf tion was a huge success and meant a lot, both financially and otherwiseg for these earnings helped make possible a wonderful prom, and everyone enjoyed the play, both juniors and their patrons. Of course, The Prom, was the big event of the year and provided the perfect setting for the transition from junior to senior standing in the school. Closing activities with that event, the junior class proved itself ready for leadership in Brockway-Snyder High. With their junior high days behind them the tenth graders have put aside the juvenile pranks of freshman days and have acquired a much P ,SZIQ OWLOPQ 64,155 SOPHOMORES MANIFEST INTEREST more serious attitude toward school and all its activities. The joy of doing a task Well has come to the front as sophomores have begun to put first things first and let lesser items assume only secondary importance. Although classwork is their major interest, sophomores have not been negligent of other contributions to school life. We see them doing their share in clubs, musical organizations, and athletics too. Their big April Showers Party was a gala affair and consequently much fun. Although the Soph's claim parties not to be as vital as they once Were, the class party was well at- tended and gave cause for speculation. Having noted their marked improvement this year, we expect, and with good reason, that the Sophomore Class will not be shirking its share of responsibility in tasks of the future. 413' Sophomore Class Officers have an informal talk with their advisor. EIGHTH GRADE BEGINS TO SHINE The eighth graders organized early in the Fall, hut concentrated their attention on matters strictly academic during the first semester. How- ever, when St. Valentines Day rolled around, they anxiously shed this air ot sophistication, carne hack to earth, and had a marvelous class party of peppy games, interspersed with danc- ing. The crowning ot their Valentine king tRichard lacohsl and his charming queen Close- phine Lockwood? highlighted the evenings en- tertainment. Yes, snuggly settled in the tangled wonder ot lite in high school, this class has successfully outgrown its junior high infancy and includes most eager participants at school functions. DRIVER EDUCATION CAPTIVATES PARTICIPANTS Driver Education, a part of the safety edu- cation curriculum and an elective course offered this year for the first time in B. H. S., has proved most helpful and beneficial to the students. Ap- proximately 75 pupils have received this trains ing and will long be grateful for having had it. Mr. Iohn McNulty, instructor, conducted the course on a two-fold basis: 36 hours of class- room instruction, followed by on-the-road train' ing, which included 8 hours behind the wheel. Upon completion the students took the driving examination under the direction of the state highway patrol. Although this is one of the newer elective courses, students enrolled in Driver Education claim it to be very worthwhile. 33 R., Q K I 9 WX ' ,. a xx 7 x 'BX 14- 2 'o' L Q 0556? ROVERS INITIATE NEW STYLE The Brockway Rovers completed their 1949 football season under the leadership oi Coach Robert Weitzel and Assistant Coach Harry Pinge. Playing an eight game schedule, the toam turned in a record of three wins against tivo defeats. The opening game of the '49 schedule was played on the local gridiron with Mahafiey. Brockways new style ot play proved to be too much for the opponents who were overpowered hy a score of 38-7. Clinching the opener, the Rovers were in high spirits for the oncoming Ridgway game, but the Elkers' strength was too much for Brock- way that night, defeating them hy a score ol 27-U. Next the Rovers traveled to Brookville to meet another strong team. Brockway, suttermg injuries from the previous game, suhmitted to the Raiders to the tune of 28-U. The Rovers playing their second game under the lights were overpowered hy the un' taltering Rimershurg team who markod up a 286 victory. Scoring a 6-O lead at half time, the boys were on their way to victory when an inspired St. Marys team came back in the third quarter to tally a T. After a long and strenuous battle the Rovers came out on top with a victory of 13-O. Next Coach Weitzel's boys downed their Falls Creek rivals in the annual Glass Bowl classic. The team, determined all the way, romped over the Potters 32-6. On Armistice Day, the Rovers took on the Sykesville Leopards for the last game of the season. After holding a highly favored Sykes team to a standstill during the first half, the Rovers finally gave way to the Leopards' power- ful attack by taking another on the chin by a score of 42-7, ending another chapter in Brock- way's gridiron history. Ever hear of it? lt sounds an- cient, doesn't it? To local sport fans, track has been an unfamiliar term because two decades have elapsed since the boys had churned the cinders for B. H. S. However, last year the rebirth of track was brought about through the endeavors of Coach McNulty. The boys didn't accomplish much last Spring, but they laid the foundations for successful future years. Participation in the District lX Championship Meet at DuBois gave the thinclads experience of much value. Track, while considered unimportant in the field of sports, really plays an important part in the development of better athletes, so Brock- way-Snyder is justifiably proud of today's track men. This group and the peppy rnajorettes provided a real thrill each time they performed on the field. The end ot footb ll season ushered in a flurry ot preparations for Con' cert Band music. Fi' of our students participated in the Central Western District Music Festival in Punxsutawney. Then we were honored by being chosen host to the County Band Festival which took place here in April. Brockway's Dance Band was a popular group in the music department too. Appearing at special school functions and dances, this band was ever ready and knew no seasonal limitations. The Girls' Glee Club, Boys' Glee Club, Double Quartet, and Mixed Chorus comprise the choral groups which reorganized at the beginning of the year and continued to maintain their high standards in both sacred and secular music. Throughout the year the choruses assisted at school and community affairs, reaching their peakfperformance at the County Choral Festival. The school is proud of the way in which choral and instrumental groups under Mr. lfert's direction, have united to produce really fine pro- grams. These organizations presented Christmas, Tlianksgiving, and Easter programs, the Easter Cantata being the major musical project of the year. 'Twas only a brief time then until commencement music cul- minated a most successful musical year for Brockway-Snyder High. VVillivmi ltr ij LU- x ta' jx V ' 653:15 ' F 4-. Mr. Charles Zoffuto, advisor to the Senior High Student Council, and Mr. Lee Shaffer, advisor tO the lunior High organization, Worked hand in hand on the March of Dimes Drive, their first endeavor. The Senior representatives planned an entertaining basketball game between the faculty and the varsity to benefit the infantile paralysis drive: and the funior f-figh members were responsible for distributing and collecting the iron lungs. The Senior l-ligh Student Council, a highly energetic group, also revised the Constitution and put on a heavy school clean-up carn- paign. Because of the fine work done by both Student Councils and the co-Operation given by students and teachers we have earned the right to say that our school government incorporates truly democratic practices. f I , james Itimison, President of the Senior High Stu dent Council, addresses the student body, SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL Left to rijht-eTrun7io, Ambrosia fVit'v Pi:-s.l. STAFF PRODUCES FINE NEWSPAPER A lively reorganization ot our school news- paper, directed by Mr. Foust, took place this year and is making the publication a highly competitive endeavor. Girls flipping here and there collected ma- terial: news correspondents dashed down the latest bit of gossipy on-the-spot reporters picked up bits here and there to roll up into a compact and interesting story, The forever chatter of the typewriters busily clicking out the articles to get ready tor the press, the tedious work ol past' ing dummy copies, the never ending copy read- ing, and then finally the completed newspaper is published. With each issue the reader loses himselt in the fascinating revolution ot lite around B.H.S. All this and much more hours ot thinking, checking, talking, writing, go into making the Buzzer, largely through the erlorts ol the stalt and reporters, a newspaper that is long anticipated and well received. LIBRARY SHOWS IMPROVEMENT When you enter our library, there unfolds the enchanting world of books. New and old volumes peering frorn the shelves provide a wealth of reading material, both informative and entertaining. This year our library has been vastly im- proved. New articles of furniture have en' hanced the appearance of the room, and through the cooperation of civic groups and face ulty members a fine selection of new reading matter has been added. The efforts of our librarian, Mr. l-larbach, and his competent staff of six girls and one boy have made the library both inviting and bene ficial to the entire school. J s Off rcwicmj Uplinger. This newly assembled club, meeting each 1' orning in activity period, quickly gained skill in the art of horne repair, and directing its activif ties was none other than Mr. Lee Shaffer, the iihib advisor. Such a helpful group has already become a real asset to our school and anticipates an even brighter future. HOMEMAKING INTERESTS BOYS Each Monday morning, activity period found the Home Economics rooms bustling with activity. Yes for sixteen sophomore boys had taken over. By cooking, sewing, and discussing proh- lenis of grooming, social etiquette, or house care, these boys were expanding their education to include knowledge of the problems that are encountered in the horne. A delicious Valentine dinner, which the boys served to their mothers, brought to a close their first semesters work. Later in the year a gay social affair gave the fellows a chance to show female admirers their social cornpetence. 075 ' OVVLQ CM N Cfiinf-f iii. i ata Left to riqhtfiiiiilin tfirrfpl, l tin' 1 CViuePrvs.J, Martino, Ainiiinini Ai t hott, Delti, Piiittiiii, 'liiivsciiil tSi Trcvasl Miss W-iiiilwiiiiigli, fr illil Vf Ii!'W Esposito, Mmifilfitiii, Lioihiiin E 5 i Row Row SENIORS PLAN FOR THE FUTURE 'Thirteen senior girls who were interested in problems oi hoineinalcing, along with their advisor, Miss Vtfambaugh, organized this club to solve individual liomeinaking problems. STAFF CHOOSES TIME AS THEME Having been chosen at the end of their lun- iar year, this Dawn staff had the advantage of an early start on the yearbook. Each member cheerfully accepted his assignment, and The Dawn began to assume its fifth edition garb early in the Fall, Delbert Butters, photography editor, was therefore able to schedule almost exclusively out-door pictures, and under the di' rection ol business manager, Edward Pisarchick, the solicitors secured a larger amount of adver- tising than any previous staff has recorded. Because it so appropriately fit in with the year ot our graduation, the midfcentury mark, we staff members finally agreed that Time should be the theme of our publication. We feel that our artists have done a fine piece of work in this respect. Endless co-operation, brainstornis, clever quirks of thought, worry, and downright hard work combined to produce this annual. And after the actual layout was made, our typists devoted hours to lettersperfect copy. Our ad- visor, Miss Longwell, spent many a sleepless night and equally tiring days, working unceas- ingly to make this Dawn a success. For her loyalty and fine direction we sincerely thank her. Also deserving of our appreciation are Miss Shaffer, who spent much of her time and talent with the write-ups, Mr. Harbach, who free quently assisted with the business management, and Mrs. Nell Marshall, whose art direction was invaluable. Mr. I-lysong was, as usual, the will- ing and helpful person who encouraged us in times of stress. Truthfully, publishing 'Hlnhe Dawn has been no easy job, and yet one that we are proud to have undertaken. We hope that this, our accomplishment, will be the one key that will link you to your high school days and will remain forever a book of cherished memories.
