Steering for the junior Class were the following oflicers this year: President, james McMeeking Vice' President, Delbert Butters, Secretary, joyce Boleeng and Treasurer, Katharine Bovaird. They were ably assisted by Mrs. Schlemmer, their sponsor. juniors certainly took no hack s activities here. We saw them on the football eat in school squad, on the basketball team, as cheerleaders, Schlemmer, Mr. Shaffer. Meekin, Butters, UNDERCLASSME in intramurals, and as musicians in the Mixed Chorus, Girls' Glee Club, and Band. Highlighting the Yuletide season was the class Christmas party with its gaiety and fun. Here juniors proved their ability by transforming the gym into a virtual fairyland. Wiiiter gave the class the opportunity to brighten the halls with their class sweaters of maroon and gold. To this group goes credit for originating the idea of having class sweaters. just before the approach of spring, juniors par' ticipated in an excursion to Pittsburgh, visiting many places of interest, but focusii Latin exhibit of the Buhl Planetarium Saving the best for last, the class D mg upon the worked like mad to produce the best prom ever. For weeks the air tingled with excitementg then at long last, prom night came. The blue and white decorations created a lovely atmosphere, a veritable dream land. With festive decorations all had changed to Chocolate Bud Land. There the freshmen and their guests enjoyed an evening of dancing, climaxed by the serving ofa delicious lunch prepared by the home economics girls. This class can be justly proud of its part in school activities, for it was well represented in football, basketball, majorettes, band, and chorus, and the nonfparticipating freshmen could always be counted on for moral support at school functions. Freshmen made outstanding contributions also in the field of Lift by supplying posters for the operetta, senior play, and bulletin board displays throughout the year. The eighthfgraders, veterans by now, hecame well adjusted and frequent participants in school activities this year, having lost all traces of their seventhfgrade timidity. GRADE BECQMES AC UAI TED On the fourth day of Septemher, 1948, the portals of the high school opened to admit the new seventh graders. They streamed hopefully to their assigned places and began one of the most hectic years of their school life. The first few weeks were filled with confusion and anxiety, hut the novelty of ringing hells and cluttered schedules soon wore off and they settled down to hard work. Mr. Lee Shaffer, the class advisor, helped them to make their adjustments to high school routine. Dickens' Christmas Carol presented to the entire student hody over the Puhlic Address System, hrought the seventh graders into the limelight, provided Hiscinating entertainment, and drew compliments galoreg this presentation was the culminating activity for a unit studied in the seventh grade English classes. A rollicking good time was had hy all who attended the seventh grade class party on April twenty'ninth. After sitting out a few dances, the boys shed their lambflike timidity, donned wolfflike holdness, and asked the girls to dance. lviany sighs were heard as the evening drew to a close, for everyone had had a wonderful time. Now at the end of their Hrst year here, the seventh graders feel that they like junior high school very much. With live full years ahead, they anticipate a wonderful high school career, and the fulfillment of many long cherished dreams. johnson, Ghar. Ferdi, Franco. Iddings, Lyle. RCVERS START SPECTACULARLY The Brockway Rovers completed a mediocre season of rough, tough football under the manage' ment of Head Coach Zoffuto and Coach McNulty. The boys played a long ten game schedule and were unfortunate in having a large number of injuries. There were seven letterfmen back this year. The season ended with three wins and seven losses. The young, green Rovers, who didn't know the meaning of the word defeat , traveled to Curwensville and sprang a stunning upset to the tune of 12f6. Curwensville drew blood first, but Brockway fought back and scored twice. The first touchdown was set up by a blocked punt and a drive of 45 yards, while the second followed a powerful drive of 70 yards. With a couple bad breaks for the visiting Rovers and some fancy running by Clarion, defeat under the lights was spelled for Coach Zoffuto's men. Both teams were held in check in the first quarter, but Clarion chalked up 19 points in the second and third quarters with a few long runs. The last quarter was a hard fought battle between both teams but neither team scored, the game closing with Clarion on top,19fO. One of the most powerful teams in Ridgway's history journeyed to Brockway and handed the Rovers a trouncing of 37f6. Ridgway romped to a 10 point lead in the first quarter. The first touch- down was the aftermath of a 45 yard drive, and the others resulted from passes. Brockway showed more spirit in the second quarter by driving to a touch down. Having failed to score upon the Ridgway team for 10 successive years, the Rovers felt that this touchdown would be the turning point in games with Ridgway. Brookville handed Brockway its third defeat by a score of 24f0. Brockway tried hard, but nothing seemed to work. The Raiders , behind meritable blocking, scored in every period but the second. After being held at bay the first quarter, the fighting Rovers broke a three game losing streak and poured their way to a l4f6 victory over stubborn Rimersburg eleven. Twice Rimersburg was on the goal line, but failed to dent Brockway's stone wall. Having chalked up its second victory of the season, the Rovers journeyed to St. Marys, hoping to make it three, but the Flying Dutchmen of St. Marys thought differently. In the second period, the Rovers weakened, and St. Marys scored with a 30 yard pass. Both teams battled on even terms until the last quarter when St. Marys recovered a fumble and plunged over the goal line for the final tally to mark up a 14fO victory. A Reynoldsville team, which had not won a game throughout the year, sprang a surprise and upset the Rovers 6fO. The Bulldogs scored the first time they had the ball and clinched the game. The stunned Rovers fought back hard, but were unable to cross the Reynoldsville goal line. The Rovers helped to celebrate Brockway Week by subduing Falls Creek l3f6. The wildcats scored first and succeeded in repelling the Rovers the remainder of the first half. After a fiery pep' talk, the Rovers took the upper hand and rushed straight to a touchdown. Late in the game, the Rovers again retaliated to surmount Falls Creek. A powerful Johnsonburg team slaughtered the Rovers by the deplorable score of 6641. The Rovers played a listless, spiritless, game under thc lights and offered little resistance to the johnson' burg steamroller. 1 Playing the last game of the season in a sea of mud at Sykesville, the Rovers fell before' the Leopards. It was an exciting game with both teams racing up and down the gridiron, but Brockway finally ceded to Skyesville after scoring once and brought the long tenfgame schedule to a close with a score of 107. MAROON ATTRACTS SPECTATORS Handicapped hy the lack of letterinen from last year's varsity, the Rovers had two strikes on them from the start and completed a very discouraging lwasketlvall season this year. However, the team consisting of three seniors, five juniors, and two sophomores, responded readily to Coach McNulty's training and gained a true respect for his rigid standards. This year's work. though not leading to a victorious season, certainly laid a sound foundation for a clicking team in 1950. Coach McNtilty's hoys started the season hy succumhing to the Alumni in the last dying minutes of a thrilling game. The Horton game on Brockway's court was prohalwly the most exciting game of the season when the Hornets made a field goal in the final minute of the game to edge the Rovers lvy two points. Another thriller was the Falls Creek game on the local hardwood, hut in spite ot, high hopes, the Falls Creek quintet pulled through to oust a victory from the Brockway lwoys. The Brockway Jay Vees of 1940 have accomplished the unusual feat of making a hetter record than their varsity idols, having completed a season of six wins and twelve losses. This is very encouraging, for it reflects good training and teamwork, under Coach McNulty's supervision. As a group of inexperienced players, they put up a game light to make a good record. The hoys have worked hard this year and have heen judged ready to advance to varsity positions for the next season. LASSIES STEP LIVELY Where the band went the Miijorettes were sure to go, adding color in their new uniforms and entertaining the crowds with their splendid twirling. These high stepping girls journeyed to all the football games, home and away. The lviajorettes also did a fine jolv of teaching thc grade school children to twirl a baton. Such efforts were recognized when elementary school pupils presented an exhihition, revealing the extent to which they have mastered the skills involved in twirling. Srkmev Our 79th Year 1870-1949 Way back in 1870, when DuBois was scarcely more than a flag stop for the east-west horse drawn stage: when the country was just recover- ing from the effects of the Civil War, and Lincoln was still a vivid memory for most of the world: and before the days of the big metropolitan papers, motor cars or radio, a little printing shop was opened in a town devoted primarily to lumbering. Today, the town and its industries have changed--life itself has a new meaning-but the same ideals and principles with which that early predecessor began, still motivate today's management.
