Susan Garda Close- U Two years ago, twenty-four students from the Class of '88 traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the Close-Up program. Close-Up is a week-long experience for students from all over the country who are interested in learning about national government. The students' vigorous week in Washington included workshops. tours, and meetings with politicians and lobbyists from across the coun- try. Highlights included a visit to the Pentagon. a law seminar at Georgetown L7niversity, and a private meeting with Congressman Brian Don- nelly from Massachusetts. The participants had a great time and came back to Brockton with new friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. But Close-Lp did not happen by itself. It took students who were interested in learning close-up about how the United States government operates. lt also took two teachers, Mr. Robert Uto and Mr. Edward Walsh, to spark the interest and make the trip a huge success. The Close-Up students from the Class of '88 were honored to be the first Brockton High delegation to this reward- Ing Pfilgfafn. - David Bamford and Sherri Geller STI 'DENTS A GA INS T DR l 'NK DRI V ING Students Against Driving Drunk. with the help of Mr. Vincent Riccardi, has managed to expand greatly this year, With an increase of approximately twenty members. the interest in the problem of driving drunk is growing. The committee is based on the motto Friends dont let friends drive drunk, and all activities are focused on spreading this idea. Although drink- ing and driving continues to be one of the major causes of death in the Lnited States to- day, the numbers are decreasing. With interest groups such as S.A.D.D. and M.A.D.D. spread- ing society awareness. both teenagers and adults have joined together in an attempt to save lives. With Bob Sullivan and Tammy Fisher as co- chairpersons. the group is on its way. Passing out buttons, pamphlets, bumper-stickers. and key chains invites students to participate in the idea of 'Just saying NO. Our goal for this year is to raise 33000 for the juvenile Diabetes Foundation and to collect 3,000 signatures for a POWXMIA petition drive. Chess Club l C-Ty f .L ' -,.. I I l ...ai TV and Radio Club The purpose of the TVX Radio Club is to offer members the op- portunity to learn about the com- munication mediums of television and radio. By being involved in various television productions, stu- dents acquire a basic knowledge of technique and the different types of equipment used in this field. They are then able to apply this knowledge through eager partici- pation in club activities. The recent production of the Brockton High l,ites news program has increased student co-operation and provided both the students and faculty of BHS. with a new look at their school. The radio show produced entirely by club members is heard daily on the Brockton Access Channel 8A. Both groups endeavor to work together to produce origi- nal television and radio programs for all of Brockton. - Keith Ciociola iam' li T C 4. ,Au CHESS CLUB The Brockton High School chess club is an extracurricular activity which involves talented students who want to learn, improve their skills at, or yust play chess. The club meets once a week with the advisor, Mr. Dennis O'Neil. The students play exhibition chess matches and record them in a catalog. After a period of time, the players with the best records are chosen for the Chess Team and go to other schools to compete. Players in the club that are not chosen for the team remain in the organization to improve their skills. Strategic chess moves, good sportsmanship, and winning records are the keys to enjoying membership in this club.
