Mr. Tom Hughes. Mr. Hughes is a teacher, an authority figure. and most of all. a friend. Two words immediately come to mind when one thinks of Mr. Hughes: devotion and friendship. Mr. Hughes cares for all of his students, He favors everyone and makes us all feel important. He wants each and every one of his students to do well in life. He doesnt give in to the bureaucracy of Administration or to the pass the buck theory. He is down to earth and honest with the students, not only as a teacher but as a person. When it comes to being devoted to the profession one couldnt do better than to look at one of the most dedicated teachers of our school, Mr. Hughes. What is a friend? Someone with a good ear, good advice. and great trust. You can tell Mr. Hughes your most sacred secret or your smallest annoyances and you know that he will listen. Mr. Hughes is not a man who holds back. He doesnt tell us what we want to hear. but rather what we need to hear. The senior class can only thank Mr. Hughes for everything he has done for us. We hope that all students will be as fortunate as we were. and receive such guidance and friendship as we have received from him. Thanks Mr. Hughes? May the future be yours! Manthala George, jr. Superintendent of Schools - - - - - - - -Robyn Webby I I I I I I I . . I I I I I I I l I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Principal Mr. Robert Reagan As our principal, Mr. Robert Reagan has played a major role in the success of Brock- ton High school. He has dedicated himself to the school since it was first built in 1970. He was first the housemaster of the Green Building and was then appointed Principal in july of 1974. Since that time Mr. Reagan has been responsible for the total operation of the high school. It is his job to be sure that all policies set forth by the school committee are implemented here at Brockton High. ln order for this to be achieved, it is essential for Mr. Reagan to correspond with house- his-uvuqv - --.,5.,,,.,A 5 I vi 'r 1 masters, teachers, parents, and the students themselves. ' Mr. Reagan believes that a great deal is done for the students at Brockton High, for there are more opportunities here than at most other schools in the Commonwealth. He urges the students to take advantage of these chances to help us prepare for our future endeavors. Mr. Reagan feels that the class of '88 has been fortunate to attend Brockton High at a time when there are so few students. Presently, there are about 2,000 less students than in 1976. This has provided v,J l and for more attention to the needs of the indi- vidual through smaller class size and closer teacher-student relationships. With this kind of quality education and the dedication and hard work of its members the class of '88 has become one full of outstanding leaders. When Mr. Reagan was asked to take another look at our class. he remarked that he has enjoyed working with us and really believes that we were interested in making Brockton High School a better place. - v - -jennifer Occhipinti Housemasters NIR. CHRIS ARGYS Mr. Mario DiMarzo has been Housmaster of the Red Build- ing since 1971. He became a member of the Brockton High School faculty in 1958, and is an alumnus of our school, having graduated in 1946. There are many reasons for Mr. DiMarzo's pride in our school, but mostly it comes from the quality of our students and faculty and their many accomplishments over the years. He feels we have been blessed with many interested and cooperative students and parents who have been an active part of our educational process. Over the years, Mr. DiMarzo has seen many classes graduate. He feels the Class of 1988 has many talented members both in academic and non-academic skills. He advises the members of our graduating class to dwell on the more positive experiences of our lives and recommends we approach the future with determination and high goals. He congratulates all of us on our graduation and wishes us happiness, and a fair share of success, and Godspeed. - Kelly Long Azure building students can always expect a friendly hello from Mr. Chris Argys, their housemaster. His favorite part of his job is working and dealing directly with students. While overseeing classroom instruction and keeping the Azure building running smoothly, Mr. Argys can usually be found in the cafeteria, in a classroom, in the library, or in his office helping students and faculty with any problems that may have arisen. Mr. Argys feels that it is very important to give kids a fair chance , and he feels that the students' interest and input are vital parts of his job. Mr, Argys has a very strong sense of school spirit and pride that he hopes rubs off on Azure students. Senors will remember his telling them since their Freshman year to get involved and work hard, because their report card is their paycheck. As the seniors get their final BHS paychecks, Mr. Argys wishes them his congratulations and good wishes, and urges them to Never stop asking WHY. - Sherri Geller MR. MARIO DIMARZO Housemasters For the past seventeen years Dr. Claire Appling has managed and coordinated the faculty, students, and supportive staff of the Yellow Building. Dr. Appling works in conjunction with the Principal and other Housemasters to improve Brockton High Schools already high-standing reputation. The class of 1988 has shown that they know their goals and are very sensible. Dr. Appling stated that the class is very mature both in attitude and behavior. She reminds the students of the graduating class that they are entering a world of diverse opportunities and she encourages students to explore not only a single career but to consider a dual career. By doing this. doors will be opened for new vocations and you will enrich your life by trying numerous avocations. Dr. Appling urges students to set goals commen- surate with your abilities. Do not be deterred from attaining your objectives. Always uphold your values to maintain self- discipline. - Kelly Long ft' DR. THOMAS CIBOTTI X 4 DR. His work is primarily related to the addressing of student-related problems. Mr. Zoino has for the past thirteen years gained the students' respect by helping them through high school's trying years. Mr. Zoino feels that class of '88 is realistic in thought and self-directed in preparing for future goals. He advises the class to always deal with people from a position of honesty and caring . He also urges the students to be aware of those people who may use you for their own personal gain, realizing, however, that those people are only a small portion of the human race . Mr. Zoino is very proud of the graduating class of '88 and states that, they have skillfully integrated those areas not only of academic excellence but also of social growth and genuine human concern . - Kelly Long MR. The 1987-1988 season was the busiest ever. The year started off with the December Pro- duction of The Matchmaker , a Thornton Wilder farce. In january a second senior show, the drama Twelve Angry Women , was put on, followed by the February youth theatre produc- tion. The Gondoliersn, a one-act adaption of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, was selected as Brocl-tton's entry in the Massachusetts High School Drama Competition in March. Making this a special year for the Drama Club was the fact that Brockton was chosen as the host site for the 1988 New England Drama Festival, a three-day extravaganza in April where the top twelve high school plays in New Eng- land were presented. Wrapping up the year was the annual spring musical. Due to the students' hard work and dedication, this season will go down in Drama Club history as an especially productive and memorable one. - By Robin Webby DRAMA CLUB TECHNICAL CREW The Technical Crew, or Techis , are the backbone of all B.H.S. The National Honor Society lN.H.S.l is made up of upperclassmen who have achieved academic excellence during their years at Brockton High. The N.H.S. students are chosen by a group of administrators and faculty in the spring of their junior year. The decision is based on a f BHS fades, class rank, extracurricular combination of the students' overall per ormance at . . ., g activities, leadership qualities, and character. Fver ear the National Honor Society Inductees are invited to a special ceremony and dinner - Y Y 1 where they pledge the oath of loyalty and receive a N.H.S. pin. Members of N.H.S. are asked to tutor other students and help with fundraising events during their senior ear. To lead these activities and to help insure that the N.H.S. pride and loyalty are Y continued, officers are elected in the fall. Luckily, there is an organiza- tion such as the Student Senate that is willing to take a stand in order to promote change. This year, under the guidance of newly ap- pointed Advisor Robert Magee, the Senate has become a potent organization willing to tackle any task. The school year began with an Orien- tation Assembly sponsored by the Senate. The assembly was designed to acquaint freshmen with the many extra-curricular activities avail- able at the High School. Student representatives of various organizations took part to make the assembly a success. To improve the effectiveness of our student government, the Senate formed a committee to revamp its present constitution as well as draft a brand new constitution for the S.A.C. Under the framework of these new documents, student government at the high school will take on a more prominent role in the lives ofthe students. The student Senate must also address student controversy over school policy and offer solu- tions to student concerns. This year the Senate presented two proposals to the administrationg one which would allow students to wear shorts during the hot weather, and one which would allow students with an A average the option to not take finals. The Student Senate has taken a more promi- nent position in Brockton High School, and with the groundwork set forth this year, 1988-89 should be a productive year for both the Senate and Brockton High. - Steve Solari and Sarah Homer Student Senate -Q gl STUDENT SENATE: OFFICERS: Andy Ashmang Sarah Homerg Christine O'Keefeg Steve Solari. Each committee is designed to represent Brockton High and voice B.H.S. students' views and ideas to different School Committees. The eight Regional S.A.C. members attend meetings once a month in Lakeville at the Southeast Regional Education Center. The members are split into Task Forces to work on social, education, and economic issues that are affecting students across the region and across the state. They learn what privileges students from other schools have, and they learn what the law says regarding student rights. The local S.A.C. members attend the Brockton School Committee meetings. They learn about what is happening in the Brockton School system, and can voice their opinions on the issues discussed. Both Committees meet with Mr. George, the Superintendent, every six weeks to discuss what they have learned and to try to apply their knowledge and work to make Brockton High School better. - Sherri Geller Members include Clst aisle T to BJ Maria Papapodopoulis, Melissa Russell, Amy Miller. f2nd aislej Bob Sullivan, Michelle Brogan, Sherri Geller, Kathy Connolly. fmissingj Laurie McGlone, Dan Spiegal. Literary Review is one of the oldest organizations at Brockton High. It stated in 1907 under the name Brocktonia. Today it remains an extremely active organization with approximately 50 active members. The Literary Review provides a forum for talented student writers to publish their work after peer evaluation. The Literary also exchanges copies of the magazine and ideas with other schools. In addition, the seniors of the magazine give a gift to the high school each year to express their appreciation. Not only are those students who are involved in the writing aspect of the magazine important, but also those students in the Industrial Arts program. Without these students the magazine would not be able to function on such a professional level. Currently, the club's advisor is Mr. Mark Lincoln, an English teacher in the Yellow house. Although there are sometimes long practices, the dedicated members of the Band have fun as well as learn a sense of responsibil- ity. With the lively tunes that they play in the stands, the crowd is motivated to cheer the team on to victory. In addition to providing half-time entertainment, the marching band also participates in various parades and the Abington Band Jamboree late in the fall. Also, this past year, the band was honored by an invitation from the New England Patriots to perform during half-time when they met up with the Indianapolis Colts on November 22, 1987. The Marching Band would like to say a GIANT thank you to their director, Mr. Vincent Macrina for all his hard work. All in all, our semiformal was a success and a definite highlight to this years holiday season. jennifer Occhipinti O 1 1 L X ' 4 A fp' i X .l I I ,- ffx I l 'J' ZAQQX . l ivv if .3 1. 7 N nu Vf',:' .-g'5'ft W-144' , 3 1- .- I' I. mf Z ' xnff -,' - J t XE 1 I i ' ' 0 1 L xxx-X1 ,A Y nf ' ir jx vuvv- QA .ho Q A X2 at-:n..if'C -4 Twelve An r Women ,W X , 'T f'- Y i S N1 f Y y I V 9.1, DRAMA CLUB -,IANUARY PLAY In contrast to the lighthearted farce of December's The Match- maker, the B.H.S. Drama Club's I january production had an entirely different style: Reginald Rose's gripping courtroom drama Twelve Angry Women. Twelve Angry Women was a welcome addition to the winter theatre season. Its two outstanding performances will be well-remem- bered. The Gondoliers - rama Competition The Gondoliers The B.H.S. Drama Club contin- ued its oustanding tradition in the annual Massachusetts High School Drama Festival with this year's en- try of The Gondoliets, a spoken adaption - Gilbert without the Sullivan - of the famous duo's operetta. The lighthearted, fast-paced pe- riod comedy centered around the adventures of two Venetian gon- doliers, one of whom is actually the son of the King of Barataria. How- ever, no one is sure which brother is the prince. The situation is complicated fur- ther when it is revealed that the prince - whichever he is - was married in infancy to the daughter of the Duke of Plaza-Toro, a Span- ish grandee. This fact considerably upsets the wives of the gondoliers, not to mention the duke's daugh- ter, who is in love with her father's servant. All is resolved when the princes foster-mother is foundg she identi- fies the true monarch and everyone NJ- Q Qs is happy. The action of the play is further brought to life by the antics of the ensemble, made up of the conradrhe Cflower girlsl and the gondoliers. The Gondoliers was a showcase of the talent and creativity of its , M C 3 production crews. The extensive set, complete with lighted lamps and working gondolas, was de- signed and built by students Sarah Homer and Steven Solari along with the set crew, under the direc- tion of Set Advisor Thomas Rich- ards. The colorful period costumes, which gave the play its finished, professional look, were conceived and assembled by Wardrobe Di- rector Elaine Kelly and her student wardrobe staff. The entire produc- tion came together under the direc- tion of Carol Thomas, who was assisted by student choreographer jessica Gain. The Gondoliers was an exciting, enjoyable addition to the 1988 Fes- tival, and demonstrated once more the dedication, energy, and talent of the members of the Drama Club. - Robyn Webby bmp 'SQ 4: 5.753 if ,fr lf, 9 1 P k , 'z ff V, 433 I 5 , ' ff I ' LJZE' L L x ' x 5.1 iw' ., I V 1:'S Y, 3 4 - 5 N1-V' 'az-..-4 . ,X 1 J 5 J 5 LX! iff A Look At Us SEN ICR . f 1 Y ' li ll DQ P+-4 DC OC 44.1 Smile so no one knows what you're REALLY thinking. S ll It 80 J On behalf of the Yearbook Staff, I would like to extend our warmest wishes and a fond farewell to the class of 1988. Special thanks must be given to our Advisor, Mrs. Beverly Joyce, and to Mr. Tom Hughes, who helped in so many ways. Without their dedication to our class, this yearbook would not have been possi- ble. We hope this book will help to keep the many happy high school memories alive in your minds. But more important than the past is the even brighter future we have ahead of us. We are sure that when we take another look at the Class of '88 in twenty years, we will see doctors, lawyers, corporate executives, movie stars, dancers, and perhaps even Presidents and rock stars. But whatever your future endeavors may be, we wish you the best of luck always. - --jennifer Occhipinti , 2 c 0 sg I I 1 Staff Members: EDITORS-IN-CHIEF: Amy Llpman jennifer Occhipinti ASSISTANT-EDITORS: Marissa Damon Frances james COPY EDITORS: Kim Lewis Robyn Webby ART EDITORS: Sarah Homer Dan Spiegel jeremy Spiegel SENIOR EDITORS: Daniela Sofia Patricia Sofia Karin Westin FACULTY EDITORS: Sherri Geller Dawn Nelson fassistantl SPORTS EDITOR: Rebecca McNamara TYPING EDITOR: Laurie Hallowell PHOTOGRAPHY: Kathy Connolly Valerie Silverman Lincoln Studios Mr. Hughes BUSINESS EDITOR: Kim Moran -Sales Staff: Marissa Damon, Eric Finn,jen- nifer Occhipinti, Dan Spiegeluleremy Spiegel, ,Jodi Stork, Michella Vella, Dawn Nelson.
