The educa- tion we receive in English is an important preparation for col- lege and jobs. The English De- partment provides a large vari- ety of courses to suit the needs of the many students, such as Jour- nalism, Cinematography, and numerous literature studies. The main objective of the Reading Department at Brock- ton High is to help students en- hance their reading skills to function better in today's mod- ern and fast-paced society. It is also an area where some students can assist their fellow classmates through tutoring sessions. Under the direction of Mr. Casey, the Reading Department strives to develop the necessary abilities that we will use in all our future endeavors. The Fine Arts Program is com- prised of many courses directed towards those students interest- ed in the field of Arts. The Fine Arts Program offers courses which will influence and remain with a person throughout life. The Department provides activi- ties for students with extraordi- nary talents and creativity. The students are able to display their talents through activities such as musicals and winter plays. One Music teacher feels that, Music brings satisfaction and provides a creative outlet. Many teachers in the Fine Arts have put much time and effort to help these stu- dents and enhance their talents. The Foreign Language Depart- ment provides students with the opportunity to learn a second or third language. Brockton High offers nine foreign language choices including French, Ger- man, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Lithuanian, Russian, and Spanish. The importance of learning a foreign language is stressed by Department Head, Mr. Pecevich: The world has entered the Nuclear Age where sometimes language can be a critical difference, e.g. Crisis in Iran, South America, Central and Eastern Europe, etc. More practically, it is still a basic col- lege entrance requirement which should be met as successfully as possible? The Bilingual Program, under the supervision of Ms. Janet Coulter, provides Non-English speaking students with a back- round in reading, writing, and speaking English. Some courses include Health, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Each class is translated into English in order for the students to become better acquainted with English as a lan- guage. The students are also giv- en an opportunity to experience a different culture, and many will be capable of finding careers in linguistics because of their bi- lingual backgrounds. The Health Course at B.H.S. deals with subjects such as nutri- tion and human relations as well as dealing with life saving tech- niques such as CPR. The Health Department, under the supervi- son of Mr, Vincent Riccardi, is organized to stress to the stu- dents the importance of learning about their own body and mind. The students leave the course knowing how to take care of not only themselves, but the others around them. As one Health teacher stated, Hopefully, the course will affect the students health decisions in regards to fit- ness, nutrition, and relaxation. As part of the Brockton High Home Economics Department, students are given the chance to explore the development of themselves as individuals through the study of courses such as child care, family rela- tions, clothing and textiles, foods fcontinued on page 247

SUPERINTENDENT LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES LIFESTYLES L .ik ful' .Z Mr. Manthala George, Jr. Mr. Manthala George, Jr., the Superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools, continues to maintain the spirit of excellence in Brock- ton. He has been instrumen- tal in reinstating many of the programs and services we lost under Proposition 2V2. However, Mr. George feels that this is just the be- ginning, there are so many programs that we have yet to restore. Mr. George feels that the declining enrollment, since we began as freshmen in 1982, has allowed for more flexibility in Brockton High. He claims that because of this decline, there will be a higher concentration on ba- sic skills in the very near fu- ture. The Superintendent be- lieves that the general popu- lation of the students has a better attitude than they did since 1982. He feels that, the students care more they have a greater desire to learn -- there is more effort involved on each student's behalf. In conclusion, Mr. George thinks that Brockton High has a great deal to offer and, those students who have gotten involved aca- demically or socially have profited in the long run. Kimberly Hall
