Q, ,' 1- :Q- ,, A M, ivi -wi ' .fi Your graduation is indeed significant as it is celebrated in the Bicentennial Year of the United States. As we approach july 4, 1976, we find that 200 years of de- mocracy have succeeded in America. The foundation of our school system was an inte ral art of earl Amer- 8 P Y ica with many significant happenings occurring in our own Bay State, among them: Harvard -- founded, 1636 Laws of 1642 and 1647 established precedent for compulsory schools The first public high school -- Boston, 1821 The first teacher training institution established through the efforts of Horace Mann, 1839. As the years have passed, the educational system has grown to accommodate and adjust to the needs of each successive generation. The concept that a democracy depends upon an educated citizenry is as important to- day as in 1776. You, Graduates of 1976, are to be congratulated for completing requirements for your diploma. It is hoped that through the guidance of your parents and teachers and your efforts over the past twelve years, that you have acquired a rich background of knowledge which will enable you to pursue the career of your choice. Continuation of the privilege of living in a democracy depends upon your imagination, initiative, independ- ence, individuality, and integrity. You are the new generation with the ideals and the fresh outlook to meet and seek solutions to problems of environment, government, health, technology, etc., unique to your generation. Your potentials are seem- ingly limitless. Aim for the stars! Set the highest of standards for yourself, do not compromise your princi- ples. Try, create, enjoy, work, compete, and persist -- your satisfactions and rewards will be great. To quote Henry David Thoreau, To him whose elastic and vigorous thought keeps pace with the sun, the day is perpetual morning, My wish to each of you is for continued success in your endeavors! -Off CMR M Congratulations to an outstanding class! You know how to take it apart to see what it is made of, how to de- velop it into something useful and pleasurable, and how to bring the idea to life. When you do that, you are qualified to enjoy important adventures of the mind and the spirit. With best personal regards, I remain Very truly yours, i HQ' , , 'lb ' :ff K, 1
