Mahone Personally, l have come to believe that your yearbook should carry no profound message from the headmaster. In reality, the message is here in the pages that follow. The pictures of your teachers, friends, the various academic, athletic and social activities will permanently remind you of your BHS days. As the years ao on, all too rapidly, this yearbook will continue to afford you moments of meditation, relaxation, lauqhter and, yes, even sadness. On behalf of the faculty, we express the sincere hope that your memories of BHS, as recorded here, will be predominantly pleasant ones! LIFE'S DOORWAYS All through lite we are going through doorways, both actual and tigurative. These doorways lead us to new realms ot learning and experience. Often we have to Choose our doorways, and some- times, finding certain doors Closed to us, we are dis- appointed. But an old saying tells us that God never closes one door but that l-le opens up another better way. lt's worth thinking about. Esther Baldwin York l2 indent Cnnnnil Uilinnr A - L. A talent show was held to raise money so that a foreign student could attend Brockton High in his senior year and be a member of the graduating class. This year's student, Gunnar Andersen comes from Norway. On March lU, the club sponsored an American Field Service Day on which six foreign students, living this year in surrounding towns, attended classes at Brockton High. These students addressed the Iuniors and Seniors at an early assembly. Later a Sophomore program was held, at which American Field Service films were shown. That night a Turkey supper, open to the public, was held at the North lunior High School. Club officers were as follows: President, Kathleen Fowler, an A.F.S. student who spent the summer in Greece, Vice-President, Deborah AWGfdf Secretary, Patricia Cuttlerg Treasurer, Marsha O'Neil. 14 .X jg .i KLIL 4, x wU?Nf..f1iWS fx-M' K H5 .1 15 I fl QQ? mmm rv fax fx 4 Aqifm ' .nwuux ggi, 5 1-Xing' X I , Q 'gf 1 6' W KV-54 AF' Er fl , Cf ' W K ff-1, CQ VK X QE l 'R Q ' Q- 'f ' X HJ QAXCTJWNJXXI jf Elf ff! The l966-67 season of the BHS debating club witnessed a busy and argu- mentative one. With Mr. Frederick A. Latendorf as faculty advisor, the members of the club put their forensic abilities to work by debating various facets of this year's National High School Resolve. This resolve concerns the con- temporary problems of United States foreign policy debated interscholastically all over the United States. Under the chairmanship of Dominic DeLeo, the members of the debating club presented practice and model debates before school audiences. The newly formed BHS debating team realized a real taste of interscholastic and tournament debating. 109 Chess Club N ted, left to right: Gordon Kent CVice Presidentl, Catherine Kvaraceus lparliamentariani, Frederick R. Chess Club, composed this year of 20 students, was dedicated to the aim of learning and mastering the intriguing art of chess. Under the direction of Mr. Saval, the club held Weekly meetings on Fridays to compete with other high school chess league members. Brockton is a member of the Southshore Chess League. Elected officers included: Fred Cooper, Presidentg Shelis Mayo, Secretary and Catherine Kvaraceus, Parliamentarian. At the onset of this year the club ac cepted a constitution which the Parliamentarian interpreted to the members Abiding by these pre-established rules, the members competed in a tourna ment where the five top players at B.H.S. played five skilled members of the opponents' teams. At the end of ninety minutes the person with the highest score became the winner. In order for a team to win, at least three of its players must have defeated their opponents. llO Brocktonia New Stalf 'st ro'.'.', lei? to right: lwfr, Hopkins, Harrie? The Math Club, established under the supervision of Mr. Sharkey, has tried in past years to accomplish its aim-to arouse a genuine interest in mathematics in our BHS. students. The club elects a slate of officers who work together to prepare programs centered around the various branches of mathematics. Two of the programs that have been offered to club members are lectures, given by Mr. Sharkey and other mathematics teachers, and trips to a nearby computer center. Those whose interests and abilities in math are advanced may try their skill at problems offered in The Math lournal , a monthly paper con- taining various articles and problems of a mathematical nature, to which the club subscribes. In addition club members may take some of the tests offered during the year by various state and national institutions. Although the membership each year is comparatively small, the club continues to provide, for those interested, a learning of advanced and unusual mathematical con- cepts, not offered in school courses. ll2 ft to right: Elaine DeSimone, l-larriet Fishman, Bette Anne Bridges, lames Saber, Samuel Brown, Alan F Dopfel Math Team Firs' rin-f. lei' 'Q rzghv Debirzr. This feature is now appearing in its thirty-eighth record-breaking year at B.H.S. lt is directed and produced by Mrs. Marion Kelleher and Mr. joseph Hart, and stars a fine cast of forty girls. Co-starring in this BHS. spectacular are various department heads and teachers, all of Whom play a major role in making The Part Timers the huge success it is. lt is the true story of how forty ordinary juniors were chosen to become forty of the most un-ordinary seniors in the commercial course. The girls play dual roles in that they go to school and classes one Week and work as secretaries the following week. The theme of this feature is to give these girls the secre- tarial experience they will need to survive in the competitive business world we live in today. They work for department heads and teachers alike, both in the high school and at the four junior highs. ln the hours they work, the girls are often in charge of an entire office and all the responsibilities that go with it such as typing, correspondence, and the operation of business machines. The Part Timers is appearing in this area only at B.H.S. and through the continued guidance, leadership, and direction of Mrs. Kelleher and Mr. Hart, it is sure to bring brighter and more exciting stars in the future, and is on its way to becoming the most highly rated educational story of the year. ll7 Public Address Monitor A M.. , 0 ay-.9 , e I - i. Listening comprehension is a very important adjunct to foreign language learn- ing, and the student should become accustomed to various voices, both male and female, in order to attain the best ear for a rncdern language. A total of four channels at the console can possibly be used at one time, if it were necessary. This means that four different language programs, in four different languages, can be on simultaneously. 140 THE WORLD IS OURS TO OWN AND RULE g WITH KNOWLEDGE AND DRIVE OUR ONLY 5556 x Mil GMX 1 P r r, ! Nearly 900 students congregated from four junior high schools to mark the birth of the lOlst graduating class of B. H. S. Although limited by an after- noon session, our class elected a slate of officers to guide the affairs of the underlings and conclude the year with the Pigskin Social. In September '65, classes returned to the morning session which was a relief to many. Our star athletes participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track with the upperclassmen. As juniors, in the middle of things , our activities were limited to the German, French, Math and Future Teachers of America Clubs. The afternoon Composition Class was a stimulus climaxed by Intramural Sports. Our year was high-lighted by the Iunior Prom, and the class trip to Washington. We patiently waited to hear of the decision of the American Field Service concerning the possibility of a member of our class going abroad. Our class was the first to have a representative sent overseas, Kathleen Fowler, who stayed in Greece during the summer of '66. During our final year eleven students of our class received letters of commenda- tion for high performance in the 1966 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The Student Council held a successful book fair and the talent show really displayed the abilities of faculty and students. Three members of the class made All-State Chorus, while two made All-State Orchestra. With our high school years concluding, the members will pursue many fields of endeavor but the memories will remain recorded in our Brocktonia yearbook.
