For the first time in many years a mathematics club was organized at Brockton High School. The introduction of modern mathematics into the high school curriculum has brought about interest in various topics in this field. Qne of the chief aims of the organization is to investigate and study aspects of mathematics which cannot be presented during regular classroom time. Such topics as number theory, modular arithmetic, set theory, and Diophantine equations have been reported on by the students. To supplement the regular program, field trips of various types have been taken. The members visited the Math Club of Stonehill College, where they listened to talks presented by members of the Stonehill faculty and by students at the college. This spring the Math Club sponsored a program at which all interested Brockton High School students and math students heard two lectures by Prof. B. W. Wagner of the University of Massachusetts, a National Science Foundation speaker. A mathematics team was also formed and trained to compete in the Greater Boston Mathematics League. This team has engaged in four meets and placed third in the league. Such activities as these have helped the club members to be more completely prepared for their college entrance examinations. 26

Germania has been holding its business meetings on the second Wednesday of each month and its social meetings on the fourth Saturday of the month. The first social meeting was a cookout at the home of its treasurer, Betty Lindquist. The club also had a Christmas party, a field trip to Boston, and a dinner. One of the main activities the students enjoyed this year was the printing of a newspaper in German. They also prepared a display case outside the B.H.S. library. The advisors are Mr. Spencer and Miss D'Angelo. 27
