This fourth annual dance, an informal affair honoring the football team and cheerleaders, was sponsored by the sophomore and junior classes. The girls' gym was attractively decorated in a fall motif, and in red and black. An enjoyable time was experienced by all who attended this first dance of the school season. Not only were the boys participating in their activities at this time, but also the senior and junior girls were seen out on Eldon Keith Field playing intramural field hockey. When the interclass games were concluded, the senior class squad had won the championship. For the first time in many years, the seniors enjoyed a match with the Sumner High School girls of Hol- brook, playing half the game against them, and the other half with them. The cross country team had a very successful season this year, winning five out of seven meets. There were several outstanding senior performers, who benefited the team to a great extent. Concluding this fall season was the presentation of the senior class play, Ianuary Thaw, by the senior actors and actresses. Ian- uary Thaw, the story of the trials and tribulations of the Gage family, was pro- duced on Broadway in 1946. The entire cast performed like a Broadway cast and made December 2, l955, an enjoyable evening of rollicking fun and merriment. 1-1 f .53 i f goofgaf jam Under the able tutelage of Coach Prank L. Saba with his assistants, Mr. William T. Parsons and Mr. Iohn A. Sarson, the 1955 B. H. S. football team was a well- drilled yet somewhat inexperienced outfit. ln all fairness to the team, it must be said that the record of three victories and four defeats is no proper indication of the team's strength. The backfield, composed of Co-Captain Dick Franciosi, George Bagas, Robert Deighton and lack Condon, was a veteran combination which possessed both versatility and power. The line was anchored down by Co-Captain and center lohn Cullinane, who was flanked by two dependable and determined guards, lack Beckford and Howard Beals. The wingmen included Co-Captain Elect loe Cerci, Bob Burke and Barry 'Walsh Others who saw constant action throughout the season were tackles Paul Clancy, Edward Bumpus and Co-Captain Elect Ernest Webby. We congratulate our football boys for their fine playing and excellent display cf sportsmanship through the entire season. t5'tf!-EQ., First row, left to right: Terrence Mclvlanus, William Campbell, Charles Beckford, Robert Deighton, Paul Clancy, Richard Franciosi, lohn Cullinane, lohn Condon, Howard Beals, George Bagas, Richard Dodd, Richard Lincoln. Tireless efforts are put in by the Dramatic Club. In addition to the Dramatic Club, the musical organizations play a most im- portant part in making the pageant the success it always is. Starlight Blues, the theme of this year's Iunior-Senior Prom, was held in the B.H.S. hall, Ianuary 21. The auditorium, beautifully decorated with glittering stars in a blue background, gave a heavenly impression to everything. Shining notes and G clefs were also part of the decorations, stressing the musical blues in the theme. The prom introduced a beautiful array of colors as seen in the gowns Worn by the girls that night. The Student Council sponsored a dance, the Hoopsters Hop, in honor of our basketball team, the proud possessors of a 17-l record for the season. The students enjoyed an evening of dancing to records played by our own senior disc jockey, David Lessarcl. To commemorate George Washington's birthday, an assembly was presented by the Dramatic Club for all three classes. Tableaux depicting Valentines that might have been exchanged between George Washington and his wife, Martha, were artistically given with accompanying music. While the boys' varsity basketball team was practicing hard and diligently for their games, the girls, too, were participating in intramural basketball. Each class had its own league of teams, which played one another in their respective leagues. Prom these teams, the class basketball squads were selected to play the championship. The senior girls, the champions, concluded their successful season with the Faculty-Varsity game. Throughout the winter months, girls were constantly kept busy with the bad- minton tournament. This tournament consisted of doubles and singles and extended over a long period. Less often mentioned are the boys' foul-shooting, intramural basketball, rope- pulling, and broad jump contests. Although these are not given the prestige of varsity basketball and other major and minor sports, they are very important because they give other boys, not able to participate in varsity sports, the chance to display their skills and talents. I4 and fl'l'lCl5 ageanf I fag -,. .f QR y S. Celebrating the Christmas Season was an impressive assembly commemorat- ing birth oi the Christ child. Not only did sophomores, juniors, and seniors attend this assembly, but there were many graduates who enjoyed the proaram. This was one oi the outstanding features in the entire school year and represented many hours oi preparation by the musical aroups under the direction ot Mr. Robert A. Vlfhite, Mr. Rodney F. May, and Mr. Walter M. Smith. The Dramatic Club arranaed reliaious tableaux under the leadership oi Miss Rose H. Condon. Much credit and praise should be aiven to Miss Beatrice L. The impressive and colorful Christmas scenes in the paaeant will long be remembered by all who had the pleasure of viewing them and listening to the beautiful background of music, 15 Z?aaLefLaf lam This year's basketball team, under the fine coaching of Mr. Gordon lVIcKernan, was definitely tourney bound from the start of the season because of the return of a veteran squad sparked by the excellent rebounding of Captain Eddie Burke, Dick Chilauskas, and Dick Mapp, and the fine driving and ball handling of Carl Eloren, David Norling and Tommy Pavao. Valuable substitutes included Garo Arevian, William Donahue, and Dick Eranciosi. On the basis of a fine season's record, which included only one defeat to North Quincy, the team qualified for the Eastern Massachusetts Tourney and defeated Somerville and Lawrence before being stopped by Winchester in the semi-finals. Leading scorer and three-year veteran Eddie Burke was chosen for the All Scholastic Team. Front row, left to right: Richard Mapp, Thomas Pavao, Edward Burke, Carl Floren, David Norlinq. Parsons's boys fared considerably better than is apparent. Winning their share of first places, the natators lacked suf- ficient depth to capture the meets. Outstanding for Brockton this season were Brian McSweeny in the breaststroke, Iames Marachino in the backstroke, and Edward Fernandes in the 220-yard free style. Some of the highlights of the evening were the Hbloomer-girl cheerleaders consisting of the women faculty members, a boxing match between the faculty and the boys' varsity squad, a football game, and, in between times, snacks consisting of submarine sand- wiches. Although most of us thought that Spring had finally arrived, Mother Nature didn't quite agree with us. The calendar read March 21, yet, upon looking out- side, one could see a blanket of snow covering the ground for miles around. The spring activities had to fight an almost losing battle against the elements and had to delay their opening days to later dates. The enthusiasm of the stu- dents was high, and all were eagerly awaiting the coming events. lt seemed that the baseball team would have to play on Eldon Keith field with boots and winter clothes instead of their normal spring uniforms. There was a question whether to go skiing or to play baseball. After a delay the team started its highly successful season. The inclement weather, however, didr1't prevent the musical organizations of the school from participating in various concerts. The All-City Music Festival, in which the Band, the Male Chorus, and the Girls' Glee Club participated, proved to be a night of great entertainment for all. After this con- cert the Harmonies, Girls' Glee Club, Galloneers, Male Chorus, and the band participated in the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Festival in Needham. With the coming of warmer weather, the tennis and golf teams began their ac- tivities. Our dancers made merry when the Senior Prom was held in a beautiful marine setting with decorations of fishes and marine colors. Another important event during the spring was the delightful and amusing Talent Show presented by the Dramatic Club. To make a direct contrast, the spirit of warmth and ardor seemed to melt the cold and harshness of the weather. 3' 5 S 2 1 gf- 5 2 5, 24 EGJQLCJ gan! The last of the three major sports at Brockton High is baseball, our national sport. This year's team, coached by Mr. Norman B. Nash, was unable to begin prac- tices as early as had been planned because of the wet conditions of the field from late-season snows. Until the field dried sufficiently, the pitchers worked-out indoors, and thus were able to condition their arms in time for the first game. Despite the handicap from the weather the team got off to an excellent start, Winning five of its six games, in a fifteen-game schedule. One reason for this fine start, was that there were seven boys on this year's squad who were regulars last season. Included among this group was the team captain, George Bagas, Another strong point was the pitching staff, which consisted of five dependable hurlers, some of whom played another position when not on the mound. Follow- ing the theory that practice makes perfect, Coach Nash's boys practiced at Eldon Keith Field every day that there Was no game. Although anything can happen in baseball, at this writing the team is antici- pating a most successful season. 1' Fl ,A If BQ' 4 Mfg ,, A0502 0l'.1 I fv I ix, V I' 44+ re, . m, . .,i,'T',.. Some of mankind's most significant achievements are the work of men of little formal education, whose inquiring minds knew no bounds of classroom, lecture hall, or textbook. Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln, among others, although lacking in schooling, never- theless made immeasurable contributions to our way of life: and Erasmus, the Dutchman, possibly the first European to live exclusively for learning, toured the countries in his search for knowledge, teaching and inspiring scholars wherever he went. Although some of us may have felt that formal schooling, so far, has been a burden to us which had to be attended to, nevertheless, the quantity and quality-may l say-of our learning, formal or informal, will probably be the basis of what we accomplish with our lives, and of what peace and happiness we give to our families and neighbors: and at some future day, we shall certainly appreciate the advantages and opportunities which we do not now perhaps fully comprehend. Even before that day arrives, we must begin to try to translate our youthful learning into action in our everyday adult lives. lf, for instance, Benjamin Franklin had merely stored up his wealth of knowledge, as an atomic stockpile stores up radiation, he would never have made his mark upon the world. So it is with us. In whatever field of endeavor we choose, let us do our best to use the stockpile of knowledge at our disposal for the advantage of those around us, as well as ourselves, that we may give evidence of our capability to tackle a job and do it well. Also, let us make the most of our situations, and take personal interest and individual pride in the finished product of our labors, however unimportant they may seem to the observer. Meanwhile, we must be awake to the need of continuing our education by extensive reading, and by observation of conditions in our environment, hoping that through study we may help to solve certain of the serious issues which exist in our society today: for instance, world peace, segregation, living standards for backward peoples, and the betterment of world health. These are problems which require the deepest wisdom of every thoughtful mind, especially that of the educated man. And what constitutes an educated man? There are two aspects characteristic of such a person: they may be considered negatively and positively. On the negative side, he will not be turned away from his goal, nor will he dissipate his energies on false objectives: he will not hesitate to speak the truth as it appears to him, nor find the ideas of others unwelcome: he will not be deceived by self-seeking prophets, but will turn away from their cynical propaganda. He will, however, maintain an unquenchable curiosity for all good phases of life: he will be kind, courteous, and tactful, both to his friends and to those who he knows do not like him: he will keep an open and independent mind, seeing both sides of any conflict and condemning only what is wrong, not what differs from his opinions: he will seek out the cultural and beautiful, and appreciate that his diploma is a beginning, not an end: he will be courteous in standing by his beliefs: he will accept misfortune philosophically, realizing that sometimes the world may defeat him temporarily to make him think: he will grow from his failures and make them a spur to greater achievement: he will need a minimum of society's discipline, for he will have been trained to self-discipline: he will try to live justly and honorably, without false pride: he will face an uncertain future with optimism and hope: and most important of all, he will revere his God and keep the Ten Commandments which are set down to be followed. As we graduate, may we keep these basic ideals in mind. We live in challenging times, offering boundless opportunities to the young to prove their worth. By doing our best to hold fast to honorable principles, we, too, may sometime be considered educated men and women, always mindful of the old philosopher's comment: Knowledge is proud she knows so much: Wisdom is humble she knows no more. 32 Sept. We recall with pleasure, and a little nostalgia, our own part in them and are proud to have belonged. As we look back over the past three years, we regret that we did not play harder, study more, and that time did not permit us to join more of these groups. We realize now how much they have helped us to learn to get along well with others. We especially want to mention the Male Chorus for which we have no photo- graph. Their music at concerts, in the Christmas Pageant and on many other occasions gave us a great deal of pleasure. The following boys make up the membership of that group: Francis Belanger, Ronald Brosseau, Richard Kim- ball, Edward McKenzie, Philip Metcalf, Ioseph Mullins, Madison Ripley, Paul St. Iames, Wayne Srnith, Wayne Staples, Edwin Wiesner, Fred Stetson, William Stoddard, Edward Sullivan, Owen Valentine, Arthur White, Iames Bourque, Robert Boysen, Robert Burke, Iohn Creney, Richard Dodd, Ioseph Donahue, Robert Doucette, Theodore Florio, David Harding, Walter Howell, Vincent Ken- drates, Peter Lalli, Robert Lincoln, Iames Waldron, David Lovell, Iohn Newsom, Kenneth Porter, Carl Smith, Carl Sondeen, Paul Sullivan, Richard Valetkevicz, Sherman Bowers, Paul Clancy, Carl Crealese, Robert DeChristopher, Richard DiSalle, lohn Dockery, Robert Dodd, David Dupuis, Frank Fisher, Stephen Gell, Edward Gershman, Robert Maglof, Dennis Healy, Wayne Karlson, Russell Kelly, David Lessard, Iames Maillane, David Nash, Caneron Rix, Richard Solo- mon, Iames Sullivan, Anthony Tarnoshaitus, Douglas Todd, Iohn Valetkevicz, Eugene Alfonso, Howard Beal, Barry Broderick, Albert Bruni, Stanley Daniel- czyk, Robert Dears, Iohn deKoning, Frank Fisher, William Hallinan, Thomas Healy, Dwight Holton, Bruce Iones, Dexter Landers, Austin Lyons, Walter Mig- nault, Gordon Pierce, Peter Rubbe, Michael Shippee, Iames Stevens, Iohn Strangis, Paul Tosca. This phrase has echoed from the lips of all the dues collectors this past year. Because these girls served efficiently, the riches were qathered and we have our yearbook. 83 QQPAOOL The yearbook staff, under the able direction of Mr. Archibald Kelly, Miss Catherine A. Tuttle and Miss Dorothy I. Goodridae, has produced an entirely new yearbook. With oriainality as our theme We have composed a book with an air of freshness and informality from cover to cover. The staff derived qreat pleasure from our weekly meetings and took genuine pride in our accomplish- ment. We extend our heartiest thanks to our advisers, to Miss Beatrice L. One oi the real tirsts this year was more and better pictures taken by our photographer, William Marks. The literary stall, coedited by ludith 'White and Stevia Dounelis, with Mr. Hopkins as adviser, worked hard. A great deal ol credit is due to the business staii, managed by Roberta Palmiero with Mr. Nash as adviser. This staff always had the advertisements ready and made possible the sale of the newspaper. Some of the highlights which made this year a successful one for the club were outstanding speakers such as Mr. Kenneth Sampson, who described the function of the school board: a Teacher- Pupil Banquet, which proved that the pupils and faculty can be great triendsg and a Three Faiths Program, which included visits to each of the three churches. The club will, we know, continue its principles ot service and devotion to the home, school, and community. 86 part jhlefff During the past year, under the supervision of Miss Beatrice L. Bosworth, the part time pupils have performed a valuable service for the Brockton School System. We see these girls working industriously as secretaries in the Junior high cmd high school offices. Some of the many duties of the girls, who must put in at least twenty hours a year, are officiating at junior high school games, intramural sports, junior high school play day, and the Faculty-Varsity game. JZ' Our Miss Brooks, the girls' physical education director, has tried to instill high ideals and fine moral character into every student, both boys and girls. Although the members of this organization may seem to go without praise many times, their hard work and untiring efforts are appreciated by all who participate in the programs or watch them. Hearty thanks to Mr. Iohn F. Burbank and his Wonderful group of boys! Qi l 'k l Us udicaf groupd A very active group this year was the Girls' Glee Club, consisting of sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors. Their busy schedule included participation in the Christmas Pageant, the Brockton All-City Music Festival, the Southeastern Mas- sachusetts Music Festival at Needham, singing for all three classes in assemblies, and numerous P. T. A. engagements. A highlight ot the year's events was the sending ot tour delegates, Patricia Carreiro, Barbara Mattinson, Natalie Ekholm and Sandra Fruzzetti, to the All-State Music Festival at Pittsfield. This has been a thoroughly enjoyable activity tor both participants and listeners. Congratulations to Mr. Robert A. White and the chorus. A popular music group this year, the Harmonics, under the direction ot Mr. Robert A. Vifhite, has carried on a busy program. Besides local singing engagements, the girls participated in assembly programs tor all three classes, and sang in the Brockton All-City Music Festival and the Southeastern Massa- chusetts Music Festival at Needham. The Galloneers, a group of unusually talented singers selected from the Male Chorus, treauently give concerts during the year. They have spent many hours at rehearsals and have been amply rewarded by being invited to give concerts at many nearby schools. The boys are under the leadership of Mr. Rodney F. Our band also helped bolster our basketball team spirit at the Tech Tourney in Boston Garden, where it won the admiration oi everyone present. In addition to playing at the athletic events, the band takes part in other worthwhile activities, such as the Brockton Spring Concert at the West Iunior High School, and the annual State Music Festival which will be held in Needham this Spring. We at Brockton High School are proud of our fine band members, both ot the way they play, and of the method in which they, as a group, conduct themselves at home and away. 94 Orclnea fra As they enter the hall for the Thursday assemblies, Brockton High pupils are greeted by the music of the Brockton High School Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Walter Smith.
