Liss ltATl0 M1953 As we, the graduating class of 1953, leave to find our places in the world, we shall discover that we must meet several difficult problems and much competition, and that We shall encounter the privileges, the traditions, and the precedents of our world of today. lt is left to us to limn, as we will, that square of canvas that men call Life. It seems to me we can develop our lives so that they will emerge from the common- place and attract favorable attention because they have been fully lived. As education forms the basis, the background, and the per- t manent structure upon which is built all lasting success, let t us not underestimate the value of learning. It is impossible ' to put the finishing touches on a picture before the comple- x. Q tion of the broad, heavy background: and any attempts to ' bring out delicate shades of features where no face exists or GEORGE RESERVITZ to paint delicate touches of nature where there is no land- scape are doomed to failure. Such ridiculous endeavors would lack stability and would attract no more attention than the daubing of a tiny child. Education, too, builds upon fundamentals. A more substantial foundation must be found if our education is to be lasting. We are inclined to think that life is short and education is long, and that the four, five, or even six years that we spend in an institution of higher learning could be much more advantageously utilized in providing the basis of a career for ourselves. ln the face of indisputable evidence, we cannot deny that education is an invaluable asset, but we sometimes reason that, though it is good for the other fellow, it would not be of much help to usp therefore, we plunge out blindly without the help of that guiding knowledge. As the popular phraseology expresses it, college is not a place to become collegiate but where one may acquire a power to grasp and overcome the obstacles that confront us. There is another form of education that should be more frequently employed by those who go to college and by those who do notvnamely, self-education. For the person who succeeds, education never stopsesince when we stop learning, we stop living. ln any endeavor which we may choose, there is an abundance of knowledge to be gained. There is also still another requisite for success, and it is far more important than any other. That is-in plain, unpoetical languageehard work. As Thomas Edison was wont to say, Success is ten per cent inspiration and ninety per cent perspiration. This illuminates admirably the idea l am striving to convey. We are today living in the shadow of World War ll and the Korean War, which is still with us. Americas role has always been and still is one of dynamic, democratic leadership among all free nations of the world. 'We must oppose inexorably and unalterably all forms of totalitarianism, whether it is called Naziism, Fascism, or Communism. As a world power, we must continue to be a good neighbor and strive to help all other nations who will ally themselves with the forces of Democracy. But in order to play this part, our country needs leaders-men who are not afraid to fight for what they believe. Today, we are but children finishing our high school education: tomorrow, we will be those leaders taking up the responsibility of defending our freedom whenever and wherever necessary. This does not rnean that all a person can look forward to is a horrible death on the battlefields of the world, for that is a most pessimistic attitude. Of course, we have a future before us! Let us not be blind rnen groping in the darkness but wide-awake human beings looking beyond the horizon to a future of far greater promise and fulfillment than this old world of ours has ever before known. Think of the wonderful advances that we can make in science, medicine, literature, brotherhood, and government of tomorrow! Perhaps we can discover a cure for calamitous disease, model more beautiful and better hornes, find less destructive uses for atomic energy, and establish a permanent United Nations where wars will be fought only over negotiation tables. The road we are to travel is not smooth: it is long and perilous. But despite all obstacles, with courage and faith in God, we snall travel that road of Life with dignity and success. 18
