No, for there before us lures and tempts Eternal Road of life. Toward Future-land we surge, We thrust- lf dare we venture, Take the stride alone. But e'er we plunge, Along the path ahead, We bow to God to offer prayer. His help we ask To do the right, In facing future dawn of strife. Keep us free frorn yearn for power, Build us more than golden tower. Aid us face the crisis met! Lose not heart, invest regret. l-lelp us stand, our hands outstretched Seeking, pleading, yearning yet! 17 Liss ltATl0 M1953 As we, the graduating class of 1953, leave to find our places in the world, we shall discover that we must meet several difficult problems and much competition, and that We shall encounter the privileges, the traditions, and the precedents of our world of today. lt is left to us to limn, as we will, that square of canvas that men call Life. It seems to me we can develop our lives so that they will emerge from the common- place and attract favorable attention because they have been fully lived. As education forms the basis, the background, and the per- t manent structure upon which is built all lasting success, let t us not underestimate the value of learning. It is impossible ' to put the finishing touches on a picture before the comple- x. Q tion of the broad, heavy background: and any attempts to ' bring out delicate shades of features where no face exists or GEORGE RESERVITZ to paint delicate touches of nature where there is no land- scape are doomed to failure. Such ridiculous endeavors would lack stability and would attract no more attention than the daubing of a tiny child. Education, too, builds upon fundamentals. A more substantial foundation must be found if our education is to be lasting. We are inclined to think that life is short and education is long, and that the four, five, or even six years that we spend in an institution of higher learning could be much more advantageously utilized in providing the basis of a career for ourselves. ln the face of indisputable evidence, we cannot deny that education is an invaluable asset, but we sometimes reason that, though it is good for the other fellow, it would not be of much help to usp therefore, we plunge out blindly without the help of that guiding knowledge. As the popular phraseology expresses it, college is not a place to become collegiate but where one may acquire a power to grasp and overcome the obstacles that confront us. There is another form of education that should be more frequently employed by those who go to college and by those who do notvnamely, self-education. For the person who succeeds, education never stopsesince when we stop learning, we stop living. ln any endeavor which we may choose, there is an abundance of knowledge to be gained. There is also still another requisite for success, and it is far more important than any other. That is-in plain, unpoetical languageehard work. As Thomas Edison was wont to say, Success is ten per cent inspiration and ninety per cent perspiration. This illuminates admirably the idea l am striving to convey. We are today living in the shadow of World War ll and the Korean War, which is still with us. Americas role has always been and still is one of dynamic, democratic leadership among all free nations of the world. 'We must oppose inexorably and unalterably all forms of totalitarianism, whether it is called Naziism, Fascism, or Communism. As a world power, we must continue to be a good neighbor and strive to help all other nations who will ally themselves with the forces of Democracy. But in order to play this part, our country needs leaders-men who are not afraid to fight for what they believe. Today, we are but children finishing our high school education: tomorrow, we will be those leaders taking up the responsibility of defending our freedom whenever and wherever necessary. This does not rnean that all a person can look forward to is a horrible death on the battlefields of the world, for that is a most pessimistic attitude. Of course, we have a future before us! Let us not be blind rnen groping in the darkness but wide-awake human beings looking beyond the horizon to a future of far greater promise and fulfillment than this old world of ours has ever before known. Think of the wonderful advances that we can make in science, medicine, literature, brotherhood, and government of tomorrow! Perhaps we can discover a cure for calamitous disease, model more beautiful and better hornes, find less destructive uses for atomic energy, and establish a permanent United Nations where wars will be fought only over negotiation tables. The road we are to travel is not smooth: it is long and perilous. But despite all obstacles, with courage and faith in God, we snall travel that road of Life with dignity and success. 18 I 'lllltlll 4 2, cf!! 4 .-M yy , ni 732' ,y at -C9 'C-1 1 4 n 1 t fi wr vw '37 5'0- gzm J 'N tan.. We blithely explain this attitude away by reiterating what we have learned through past experiences. We also claim to have risen above the mistakes of man and his forgotten morals. But, have we? Are we the people to judge when we are but one of the generations of people who think ourselves a master race? lf we take careful scrutiny, we find that we have often taken backward, not forward steps. Look at the Chinese nation. At one time, undoubtedly, it was the most cultured civilization on the face of the earth. What happened to the tremendous power held within Caesars hands? lt happened to Napoleon's army too. Forgotten Hitler discovered his mistake much too late. Dictators all over the world are slowly becoming conscious of their obvious errors. And we fine folk of America can find out that it can IOSEPH S. CARNABUCI happen here. If we are to be the real leaders of the human race, if we are to make the much-to-be-desired progress that we continuously talk about, we must recognize, at once, our full responsibility not only to the United States, but to the world as well. ln l806 Wordsworth wrote: The World is too much with us, late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers. Little we see in Nature that is ours: We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon! This sea that bares her bosom to the moon, The winds that will be howling at all hours, And are upgathered now like sleeping flowers, For this, for everything, we are out of tune: lt moves us not.-Great God! l'd rather be A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn, So might l, standing on this pleasant lea, Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn, Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea, Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn. Men and women are no more ambitious now than they were in yesteryear. Even in the good old days, big and little men alike, were trying their level best to control the multitudinous phases of human life. lt was, bluntly speaking, brutality, blasphemy, and blood! Perhaps times do not change, fortunately, people do. We realize that we are making mistakes, we are trying our best to rectify these errors. True, we often discover the blunders too late, and it is then that we find ourselves forced to admit that our greatest soldier of good, our conscience, must come to the rescue. Fraility, it seems, is a human attribute. The strangest part of our complex, human structure is its perfect balance. Of our five senses, two stand out as being those which most frequently guide our choices in behavior. One of these senses directs us to those things which are good, the other directs, as well as lures, us into the realm of bad thinking. lt is so much easier for all of us to relax, to allow that strong sense of the bad to lure us into submission to the false promise. We have eyes with which to see, ears with which to hear. Our tongues permit us to pray at will. We use our arms to perform the most mental tasks. Our legs respond when we show desire to go from place to place. And still, with all of these five senses ready to abide our commands, we must first examine our conscience. Are we truthfully thinking, seeing, feeling as our innermost conscience, dictates? We should, for basically we know that, although we never see it, our conscience is, indeed, factual. And it shall remain a fact forever. fC0llfilIll6llI 011 Pagc' 931 21 xv ' ' ' ' V ' If wa- X I Sk I 'ij,fX I ,gf Af' PLANNING THE SENIOR PROM . vNC'5'f'fv I - CQ-5oc1A1,.I .3 DECORATING FOR PIGSKIN SOCIAL ENIOYING THE PROM A HAPPY ENDING THE BROCKETTES ENTERTAINMENT GALORE HRI TMA Mlllil T ,jf wr sf y ,X On December 23, an extreinely beautiful and inspiring periorniance was given at Brockton High. ln a hushed and darkened hall, the Christrrgas pageant was begun with a processional: O Corrie All Ye Faithful. While always keeping in mind their goal, to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards, the Tri-Hi-Y girls have enjoyed an unusually active year. At their weekly meetings the girls heard a number of distinguished speakers, and held dine ners and social evenings for their own pleasure. Among the more serious activities, the girls took part in the city series, that is, members were selected to assume the duties of city officers for a day. A particularly memorable experience was the Lenten program, a series of talks delivered by laymen of different faiths. These lectures acquainted the girls with the beliefs of others. The guiding force responsible in part for this successful year was the young and pretty advisor of Tri-Hi-Y, Mrs. Harold Rafuse. He insinuated the terms preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification into the recesses of man's mind. With Huxley as a guide, I conclude the human being to be the one existent machine that can be called a perfect invention. Man is the only complexity that can lay claim to an efficiency that steadily increases. Thus, preparatory man finds himself formulating ideas from physical surroundings and exterior stimulations. lncubations come forth when basic ideas change to original thoughts and desires. When man sees these ideas and desires come to life, illuminations are upon him. And great is his happiness when a human can verify for the first time. Now, he can look over the achievements of life. Let us hope that he has done the job well. Reflecting back to the very beginning, we can find further proof of our premise. When a child is born, he almost immediately demonstrates traits and characteristics of love, fear, and rage. Even an infant fears the darkness or an acute pain. He demonstrates rage at that moment when he first experiences any restraint. He absorbs the love of those about him. And before we know it, Time, that incessant thing, steps into the picture. For as you well know, Time never stops going forward. And so it is that the child becomes an independent being. He starts thinking for himself. The passing from infancy to youth occurs with but little change observed. Therefore, it is the wise parent who recognizes this demonstration of new-found independence as growth that is to be desired, not insolence. Finally, this continued passing of time with its resultant growth allows us to approach graduations such as this one of the Class of l953. Graduating can be a joyful occasion: it can be a sad one. Some of us have taken steps toward the achievement of our ambitions. Some of us have already been accepted in schools of higher learning. We see possibilities of arriving at our goals within the rather immediate future. There are those of us, I presume, who still search to find ourselves. One might say, caught between further education or apprenticeship, caught in the web of a cold, commercial existence. And yet, it is a happy thought that each graduate present here today can, without a doubt, do at least one thing Well, no matter how mental that one thing may be. Each of us knows that he has opportunity to find himself, to discover his strong points, his weaknesses. Not that l want to appear a braggart and boastful, but the time will arrive when each of us of the Class of l953 will find the truth for which he has been seeking amidst the welter of ideas and philosophies abroad in a confused world. Have no fear, no doubt. We shall find the truth. And we are going to understand it, for We shall have investigated the intricacies of the miracle of life. We shall have reasoned out its purpose. For us, to be able to see the light is of greatest consequence. We must achieve it if We are to really live a life of purpose. lt is then that we may resign our fate to God. 93 by 4.55.11 1, 145' f '11f'e 5-1 9'-':' - 3 ff., 1, -X T. if-idgfis' ' , ,V ' , ' 4,517 ,J fi NN s'S4'- I ' -, ' ' 1. ff .
