reaiclenf ji .xdclcbeda CCondensedl By FREDERICK T. HAYWAED c Quo vadimus? Where are we going? Are we of the present age so confused in a scramble for material gains that we are blind to our spiritual destination? Are we suffering from a case of moral myopia? ln another hour and a half, my classmates and I shall have graduated from the preparatory rehearsal in school to the world stage to assume modest parts for which many agencies have been coaching us. What kind of world do we find? l am here to tell you what we think of what we find and what we believe the role of all of us to be. Our backstage preparation for the world scene has laid stress on the importance of integrity and moral courage. Thus we have assumed that the drama in which we are to participate will be built on lofty themes with characters of heroic stature. But as we approach the footlights, what does the class of 1952 find? Before us stretches a darkness that obscures the light, a darkness that provides the atmosphere for tragedy. What is this shadow? It is that of moral decadence, an evil so widespread that it extends from the Capital to the basketball courts and to the most modest home. We are disillusioned. What are some of the reasons for this moral laxity among us all? It seems to spring from two general sources, a new emphasis on materialism and an in- creasing lack of moral independence. Our new high standard of living, an over-abundance of money, the psychology of getting something for nothing fostered by the welfare state-all these explain the new importance of material- istic values. This would be less serious it it were not for the easy attitude toward the acquisi- tion of these possessions. Rapidly disappearing is the moral independence of the pioneer who was free to follow the dictates of his own conscience. Alone in a remote region, he bowed to no public opinion, yes-yessed no man to secure economic security. With roots deep in the earth he cultivated, he was a sturdy oak, alone and proud, breathing a free air under a sky that seemed his own. Today, however, in our more closely populated communities, in our more com- plex economy, that moral independence is disappearing. Today, it is important to fit in, to placate even at the expense of personal convictions. Modern philosophy stresses the importance of winning friends, willy-nilly, even at the expense of influencing people in the right direction. The fear of economic insecurity has created the yes-yes man who many times is forced to become an agent in transactions of which his conscience does not approve. This is the world stage as we see it only in the first glare of the footlights. As our eyes become adjusted, it is a relief, however, to recognize in the darkness evidence of man's potentialities for good, for right thinking and courageous deeds. Besides the churches, the Y's, the welfare agencies, there are in this country alone hundreds of organizations whose purpose it is to work for the physical, moral, and social betterment of mankind. But, classmates and friends, this better side of the world picture needs our support. Men in all professions recognize the need for a moral revival. VV'arns Dr. Sockman of the National Radio Pulpit: There is a need for more moral athletes and fewer moral acrobatsf' Says Eddie Rickenbacker: lf we are to protect our freedoms-, we have a second and even greater rearmament task ahead of usp namely, spiritual rearmament. We have often heard the words, The future of our country lies in its youth. ln these same leaders of tomorrow may we see some of the moral courage of Captain Carlsen, the heroic skipper of the sinking ship Enterprise With no thought of publicity or gain, he doggedly adhered to his own standard of honor ehe remained with his sinking ship. He was alone and in danger on a riotous sea. The plunging and rolling Enterprise was racked in agony. Security lay in the waiting lifeboatsg security lay on the inviting decks of the tugboat Turmoil But to these temptations the Captain turned a deaf ear. Today the Enterprise rests its broad bulk fathoms deep, but Captain Carlsen is safe. Forgotten is the loss of the ship, but of undying importance are the stamina and courage of the man. Steel is fragile and temporal, but the spirit of man endures. 19
